My gas guage recently went kaput. It's now stuck on "E". So I thought I had at least enough to make it to work this morning. I thought wrong. I accelerated from a stop light and the Jeep started to buck slightly, but I still had power and I knew there was a gas station a few blocks up so I crossed my fingers and kept driving. Although I tried to position myself so I could make a smooth turn into the filling station I ended up stalled in the left hand turn lane with a line of pissed off people behind me. What's worse is that I couldn't get to the gas station as it would be impossible to push my Jeep over the six inch high median. But on the right hand side of the street was another gas station. All I had to do was push the Jeep accross two lanes of traffic, during morning rush hour. Well the gods were smiling on me because a long gap in traffic occured and I was able to push it accross, buy gas, and be on my way. The whole ordeal only took about five or ten minutes. But what a way to start the week.

That sucks a Royal amount of Monkey Dong. . .

I am really bad about buying gas. I know how wrong it is but I never fill up. I buy ten bucks worth. And when gas is two bucks a gallon that ain't much. It's so stupid because I end up spending the same amount, but I have a problem spending $30.00+ to fill up.

I agree. Well, at least everything turned out good for mile considering the circumstances and what could have become of that situation!

Ahh.. so now i know what that extra gallon of gas in my parents trunk is for..

Good effort pushing the Jeep across two lanes Mile!
It's always handy to keep a little spare in your boot/trunk.

Heh, I've never run out of gas while I was driving. Sort of.

Two months ago, I hopped in a loaner car to pick up something at the supermarket across the street. Maybe a tenth or two of a mile, round trip. No biggie. That gas light doesn't mean anything, I'm just going across the street.

I got in the loaner (an ES 330, for those keeping track), and stopped a the first stop sign out of the loaner lot. The car stalled. I restarted, and proceeded to the next stop sign, where the car stalled again after I hit the brakes.

I restarted, and the car's engine ran for another 5 seconds. Nothing left in the tank. Great, I thought. I'm responsible for fueling my cars (10-12 in my mini-fleet of loaners), but this is ridiculous. I called two valets and two assistants over to push the car, and I'm tugging at the wheel to park it back where nobody can run into it. Lucky for me, this part's on a sight incline, and the car deftly parks itself into a parking spot up front.

Funny thing is, I was able to call our roadside assistance fella over to refuel my loaner, and get paid for writing the work order! And, the manager yelled at the last guy who checked in my loaner for failing to recognize the no-fuel situation!

Heh. Life is funny sometimes.

Maybe it's because I don't really have a trunk since it's an SUV, but when I take the gas can to the station to fill for my lawn mower it always makes the inside stink like gas.

Ah right that's a fair point I guess.

I used to know a gal who kept a jerry can full of fuel in her backseat. Just in case she said. Then, she picked up the habit of smoking. I was helping her clean the car out one day, and had to tell her to remove the damn thing! Nobody told her not to blow her self up to kingdom come....

I used to run out of gas a lot. In fact in my old Pontiac I ran out of gas and was able to coast into gas stations not once but twice.

Glad it didn't inconvenience you too much.

i ran out of gas once. i was driving my dads 74 F-250 and it had dual tanks but the gauge didnt work for one of the tanks so we would just run it out until the engine started sputtering then switch it over to the one that the gauge did work on. while i was driving it it started sputtering and when i switched it over the other tank was already empty. thankfully it was only like 1 mile form my house so i just walked home and got the gas can and then went and filled it up.

How did you steer your car across traffic while pushing it?

I would figure pushing from the body with the drivers door open with one hand and the other hand pushing with the steering wheel while struggling to turn the thing. . .

Yeah. You have to get some good momentum going to get it up the slight incline of the station entrance. Any further and I would've needed help.

Well that makes sense. The last time I had to push somebody's car was when he ran out of his battery and we started it by popping the clutch. He was running outside of the drivers door and he almost missed his jump in to pop the clutch. If he wouldn't have gotten in, his truck would have gone straight through the window of the American Eagle store in the shopping center.

I haven't ran out of gas in a long time.

I thought I was going to run out of gas one day when me and my Dad took my Cobra out to make some videos on the highway. Long story short I ended up driving with the low fuel light on, and the needle a 1/4 tank mark below E for about 23 minutes.

Picture when the light first came on below:

Isn't running out of petrol (gas) with a catalytic convertor fitted a "Bad Thing"?

I don't know about that. Putting in the wrong kind of gas might cause some damage though.

You really should get that gauge fixed, milefile.
The temperature gauge on my dads SUV apparenty doesn't even get past half-way, regardless of how long you drive, where you drive. It really worries me. We went to the beach about 3 weeks ago and when we were coming back we got stuck in a line of cars through some mountain roads, not the best thing you could wish for when it comes to keeping the engine cool. The whole time that gauge never went above its usual spot just under the half-way mark. The engine probably has great water-cooling capabilities but it still doesn't seem right.

Running out of gas really sucks. I ran out of gas once.......on the freeway. Only made it halfway off the next offramp by the time it stopped. Had to walk around for about a mile to find a gas station. The worst part was the stupid gas can that the gas station sold me. It had this weird safety latch thing that ended up spilling more gas than I would have with a stupid funnel. But, gotta be safe

I've never ran out of gas. But, I once had a signal generator go bad on me in the middle of traffic. It's like running out of gas.

when i first got my licence i ran out of fuel all the time

My brother used to run out of gas all the time when he first got his motorbike. Largely because the fuel gauge was broken and he was terrible at remembering how much fuel he put in.

I personally put in a half tank once the needle gets to just below quarter. That way I always have a fair amount of gas in the tank.

I never let my gas guage get below half tank. Ever.

Running out of gas in an un-familiar neighbourhood while driving a hundred thousand dollar car is probably not a great idea. I don't even like to come to complete stops at traffic lights. I like to try and keep a slow roll atleast.

I got stuck downtown the other day with my brother(on spring break) in the car with me. Nothing like sitting in bumper to bumper traffic in some ghetto ass projects(I don't care what Doug says. Right when you get off the Cooper River bridges it is still GHETTO!) with huge groups of people hanging out fighting, drinking, pissing(yes, we saw a few drunks pissing), playing basketball, etc. We even saw like 16 year olds walking down the road drinking beer. We got lost on our way to the Charleston Aquarium/IMAX theater. Damn, what fun it was to be two white kids under 20 driving a loud ass new Cobra through a predominantly black neighborhood with people staring, and screaming **** at us.

That is one of my worst fears right there. Getting stuck and/or getting lost in a bad part of town.

If I am in ghetto country I won't stop even if there is a cop behind me. I don't feel like getting shot over a car. I will happily take and speeding ticket or fine they wan't to give me. It is better than getting shot in the temple and dragged out of your car.

Anyone who knows parts of Scarborough (around Toronto) knows that there are definatly some areas that are not the safest place to be, even during the day.

I was heading back to Melbourne from the '93 Adelaide Grand Prix with a mate of mine. We went in his car, and he was driving - the whole 10 hours. That was fine - I could nap, and I had a couple of books to read.

If you ever do the drive from Adelaide to Melbourne, the golden rule is you stop for fuel at Nhill - it's too far to the next stop.

We were flying along, and went through Nhill. He was convinced we could make it to the next town, so I went back to my book.

About an hour out of Nhill, I became aware that we were travelling a lot more quietly than before, and that my mate had the car in neutral trying to start it. We coasted to a stop - I made him go and get fuel, and lunch. He was gone for about an hour and a half.

i have driven from adelaide to melbourne a quite a few times, i am paraniod about my fuel, late at night most servos are closed.

i go from adelaide to bordertown then refuel and after that get fuel every chance ive got
