Ok here's the deal, Ive been looking up prices at what not and comparing but I have yet to try out these products. I was hoping any of you guys might be able to help me on the matter. Reliability, ease of use, dead pixels? (heard psps have a problem with those nasty things), etc.

Ive been looking at the IRiver PMP 140, has 40 gigs, play vids, mp3s and FM radio,
and all sorts of other goodies.

Ipod also has a 40-60+ gig and does pretty much the same thing, except ipod is on a 2.5 inch (or 2 inch screen) whereas the I river has a 3.5 inch screen.

Im stuck at making a choice between the two.. Im slightly leaning toward the iriver.. coz it has a bigger screen... slightly more expensive though.. i didnt like the battery life either (5 HOURS!! on video playback!! 5 HOURS!! thats not much, and 10 hours on mp3s..)

IPOD 60 gig version is retailing at 598 dollars
and the 30 gig version at 449
*website didnt say how many hours playback on vids... but it did say 20 hours playback on mp3...

IRIVER PMP 140 - 40 gig retails from around 800+ aussie dollars..

*all prices in aussie dollars 👍

Any discussion on either of these new tech items would be of great help thanks :D

I have a 20GB iPod, and I love it. I haven't used an iRiver yet, nor do I really want to.

In my iTunes library, I have about 1300 songs on there, and even if I put all of those songs on it, I still have another 15GB to fill. But then again, I don't have any photos or videos on it. I think 40GB or 60GB is sort of overkill, but then again, that's just me.

And about the screen, I don't think it's too small, unless you are going to look at it from several feet away.

And for battery life, I experience about 10 hours, give or take an hour.

5 Hours video playback is decent. If you'd watch a video on a laptop the battery would probably die quicker.

If watching videos is more important than the music I'd go for the iRiver, but then again iRiver has ****ty customer support, so if it's broken you're screwed.

My service with iRiver was pretty good actually.

My H340 died, I returned it to the shop under warranty, it was sent to Korea for testing, iRiver deemed it truly dead and sent me a brand new H340 in the post.

Whole service took just over a week.

Anyway 5 hours video is actually very good, the iPod wont be able to match it, remember a video takes up about 6 times more battery life than a mp3.

Haha I doubt they'd be able to send it to Korea and test it within a week. Actually I'm sure that isn't what happened. I bet they were like "screw it" sending it to korea is more expensive than giving him a new one. That was service of the store, not iRiver.

Cool! thanks guys! yeah Im leaning toward Iriver! Ipod is cool though :indiff: all these decisions! meh, or should i just get a big tv for me room hehehhe :D
thanks for the input guys!!

If you want video get the PMP since it does it better than the iPod. The iPod has 4 hours playback for the 60g (video)

Why does apple keep on pumping out ipods...........its getting really annoying, devaluing the brand and angering exsisting customers........I would be really pissed if I had just bought a nano to find that I can get a bigger screen and video playback!

I bought my 20gb ipod 4g a while back and within a month they had released the colour screen! :grumpy:

The iPod only does two hours worth of video playback for the 30GB version, four for the 60GB. If you want a hand held device that does video, I would look else where than Apple.

Have you considered the Zen Vision from Creative?

Get the Cowon iAudio A2 if you want a video player, get a iRiver H340 or iAudio X5 if you want a music player. The only plus I see in an iPod is all the accessories, true shuffle and good playlisting functions.

Same for me. I don't really miss having one, but it would have been nice if they'd have saved this improvement for the next generation. Now if I'd want to sell mine I'd get less money for it, because mine is B/W, while it was even more expensive than the color-screen ones they sell now.

Im just mainly looking for a mulitpurpose unit.. The PSP was gonna be it.. but then i thought.. the mem card costs too much... id be satisfied with mp3 and video, radio... if there is tv too that would be hectic.. ill check out the iaudio a2.. and the creative too thanks for pointing me in other directions as well :D

it's a lot more portable than a PSP... I personally had no problems using my laptop though.

I actually don't have to worry about the batt issue though because I have a power inverter for the car and then a USB to wall plug converter so I can use the existing apple cable and have it powered at all times where ever I go. :D
