lets face it..... whales are hulking, lazy gluttons of the sea. do you know the amount of sea life consumed by whales everyday?????

the amount is stagering. i think these beasts need to be controlled. so i say to you all.... GO take you're guns, harpoons, giant fishing nets, nuclear weapons and lazers! kill and kil untill you no longer feel the need to destroy anymore whales. only then will this whale problem be resolved.

thank you:D

Interesting topic. :)

I think whaling should be stopped. I think whales are creatures of almost indescribable majesty, and they deserve our protection. I've never really felt that the world would be a better place with more krill in the sea, so I remain unconvinced of the environmental benefits of killing whales.

spike10h, I'm interested: have you ever seen a wild whale in real life? I mean, not in Sea World or some other form of captivity, but actually out there, it the ocean?

Their calm mysticism is an inspiration.

At first I was enraged by the opening post, not so much because of what it suggests, but because of it's irreverence for life, and it's obvious ignorance of basic ecology. Then I remembered that morons have no appreciation for anything beautiful of important, and discovered for the tenth time today that I expect too much from impaired brains. The opening post is drivel, without foundation, and I'm disappointed that Giles appears to have taken it seriously for a second.

oh JEEZ relax i have to do a speech and one of the subjects was "whaling" .... thats all it said. so i figured that since it didnt say "why whaling should be stopped" i decided to say what people wouldnt expect, i decided to say that i am pro-whaling(although i truly cant understand why its still around and i do think it is wrong) it is just for comedic effect so just relax and LAUGH

So that'd be like when I said I wanted to know where I could buy some new slaves and dispose of the bodies of the ones I beat to death, and everybody got all up in arms over it when I was only kidding. Sorry. Right over my head.

In light of the recent complaints about the lack of interesting things to talk about on GTP, I had spotted it for what it was, which was an attempt to provoke a discussion.

You may wish to remember milefile, that there are people who agree with spike10h's posited viewpoint, and that there remain people who are convinced that whales should be killed. It is also quite likely that someone who lives in the middle of a large continental landmass would not have a proper appreciation of the subject.

There are many times when someone will take an apparently ridiculous position just to simulate debate, and we should recognise that this is not entirely a bad thing. Of course, there will be times when people are just being stupid, and then a savage response would be justified.

Let's see if we can discuss things, rather than immediately assuming that the thread starter is an idiot.

My physical person is in the middle of a landmass but my mind is on the ocean. There is no compelling reason to kill whales, no benefit except out of some hackneyed sense of obligation to an old, obsolete culture.

I believe whales are smarter than the average bear. They are probably the second most amazing animals on Earth, after us. I believe this for many sea mammals including all the whales, porpoises and dolphins. I believe they know us, and want to know us, and that the space between us and them only appears to be vast. I can't prove it. The best I could do is offer up some second hand information I've heard about. It's the sort of thing I trust my get feeling on, like love.

We shouldn't be killing whales, we should be getting to know them.

Are there exceptions to that? Yes. So-called eskimo groups who simultaneously subsist off of and worship these animals in a way not unlike the plains indians of North America lived with the bison.

Let's face it... Humans are hoarding, lazy gluttons who've swarmed all over everything. Do you know the amount of destruction perpetuated by Humans every day???

The amount is staggering. I think these devils need to be controlled, so I say to you all: "Take your guns, tactical knives, semi-automatics, nuclear weapons and lasers! Kill and kill untill you no longer find anymore Humans *to* kill. Then, kill yourself for good measure and to round off the argument. Only then will this Human scourge be resolved.

No, thank you...

Funnily enough, the phytoplankton that most whales eat are primarily responsible for almost all life on Earth.

These guys are the very, very bottom of the chain in more than one respect - they produce the oxygen. Anyone who says "Ah but trees are the lungs of the planet!" - ask them what trees do at night time... That's right, they respire and produce carbon dioxide!

But, with no whales (amongst other things) to eat them they'd go nuts and we'd be overrun with oxygen-producers - and imagine what the world would be like with 30% oxygen instead of 21%... Imagine just how much forest fires would burn - and how easily...

Ecosystems are fun!

Hey, they don't produce carbon dioxide. That's like saying that we produce oxygen because we exhale it when not all of it is used.

go back to school you turd.....trees produce as much carbon dioxide as they do oxygen.....

The air we inhale contains 21% (ish) oxygen. The air we exhale contains 14% (ish) oxygen. Thus we are a net oxygen consumer and (since the carbon dioxide concentration goes up from 0.04% to 2%) a net carbon dioxide producer.

Trees, during the day, are net oxygen producers and net carbon dioxide consumers. But during the night, when they are unable to photosynthesise, they respire, just like us, and become net carbon dioxide producers and net oxygen consumers, just like us.

Trees are responsible for "locking" large amounts of carbon, by simply being. But when they stop "being" they release large amounts of carbon - through decomposition and, yes, turning into fossil fuels for mildly cunning apes to burn.

Right. During the night. They respire during the damn day too. The plankton do the exact same thing. You can't photosynthesise without light, so carbon dioxide doesn't get broken down. Of course, many plants also absorb carbon dioxide at night. Desert ones usually. They don't want the water to transpire away during the day, so they don't open the stroma until nighttime. During that time, they take the carbon dioxide from the air and form it into storage compounds. In that way, you could say they cosumed carbon dioxide.
We're both working on loopholes.
