Hey GTP

Me and a few friends have talked about going to see the Rally in Ireland. But since it costs us both plane, car and hostel it isn't exactly free. For that reason we would like to get the full potential of a Rally as a spectator. I have seen quite alot of rallies on the telly, but I am a total novice when it comes to real life spectating. Have any of you ever seen a WRC rally live? Do you drive from SS to SS? How much will you actually get to see over a weekend? Are any of you going to this Rally?

Ya, Im from Denmark :)

I went to Rally Australia in 2005, and it was pretty much worth every cent (though I have no idea how much it cost as it was for my birthday). I'm not sure how the Irish Rally is structured, but here in Australia, all the stages were pretty close together. We basically had to drive out from Perth to a site in the middle of the forest, but at times it was actually possible to see two separate stages at once; we simply walked from one to the other when one stage was finished. It was like that across the three days, because all the stages were centred around one location on each day. The most we had to walk was maybe five kilometres.

Me and my Dad have been Wales Rally GB for the past 4 years.

The general structure is that we buy a day pass, and can choose to go to any stages on Saturday.

We choose to stay at the same stage for both run throughs, but we could drive to a different stage for the second run through.

We did try this a few years back, but we caught up in traffic and missed all the big runners :(

General advice, if you don't mind waiting a bit (and I mean like 3 hours between the last car and the first car), choose one stage and spectate there all day.

On any stage, you get to see all the big runners drive through, and then get to see the less talented private drivers go through.

Hope this helps,

Hey, I'm from Ireland and I might go to it, not too sure yet. Its suppose to be a great rally, and of course this is a great country! People are really friendly apparently. :dopey: If you want any advice on anything about staying here or what ever just ask and when I find new info about the rally I'll post it here. Although there isnt much news about it yet. Heres the link to the official site, although I dont think it is updated too often.

Edit: Theres a PDF file with loads of information under rally guide 1 in that link, it might be useful.
BTW it's the first round of the season on the 30th of January until the 1st of February 2009.

WRC=Overrated

Seriously, if you want to park within a mile of the stage you need to be there 2 hours early and then you have to wait ages between every car and there is no action at all and the traffic is terrible...

I'd rather drive 3 hours to a Mini Stages than 5 minutes to the WRC

Edit: check out this forum for info (and a lot of gossip) http://www.rallyforums.com

I'd agree there Mk2. Smaller local rallies & British Rally Championship rounds have just as many quality cars (even WRC cars) but with more unusual stuff (6R4s and very highly tuned old Escorts).

Just been to the RAC at Olivers Mount (bike racing road course) yesterday, check out my photos thread for pictures.

My-self and a mate done the rally Ireland last year, and it was deadly:).We done two days,Saturday&Sunday..The first day started about 4.30am heading from Dublin to sligo area,we got about 6 stages in that day:tup:,but it involves a fair bit of driving on your part between stages..lol,that was half the fun of it for us,although my A3 didn't think it was much fun by the end:sly:.We stayed in a b&b on Saturday night which was close to the stages that would happen on sunday, and got another 3or4 stages in that day.The Garda i have to say where great.(Any body that has dealt with the Garda knows what i am on about). The northern police on the other hand where out in force and where not as laid back about people rushing from stage to stage.I think somebody mentioned that you had to park and walk for a mile or so,to get to the spectator area!this is true. The way we got around all the traffic issues was to only stay for the main WRC Drivers,( I get to see the other Drivers all year round) and then make your way to the next stage before the other stage hoppers move.Make sure you have your maps with you,and who ever is not driving becomes the navigator:D.Fuel costs for the weekend was about 90euros(my mate is a big bloke:scared:),the b&b cost us 60euro.Service area tickets cost 10euros,(we had vip passes)thanks to some very kind mates i have:tup:.The Rally Ireland is well worth doing,it says tarmac event,,but its more like gravel and ice at that time of year.even the top lads of the wrc,who done it last year thought it was a very hard rally, due to the amount of change in grip they would get, some of our (b roads)look like pattern quilts:ouch:
