I want to buy a PS2 but...

... I live in Brazil so, the only games around here are pirated (not kidding). I have two options, one from my friend and one online. Both use the same modchip...the games are not original too..

Friend: PS2 model 3900, 2xDS2 originals, Memory Card and 15 games. It has 1 and half year of use.
Online: PS2 model 5001, 1 DS2 original, Memory Card and 1 game. Brand new.

Both are the same price, around $300 (R$1000 in my country). Wich do you guys think I should get?

2) How easy is it to get another pad?

If it is quite easy to get both I would go for the newer one because as there seems little games industry you might find it harder to get the older PS2 repaired if it goes bust.
 
What modchip do they use? If it´s not DMS3 then your friend is charging you too much. I would get the newer one, because I play alone most of the time, and even if I needed another controller you know it´s easy as hell to find it. You can even use PSone controllers.
 
I'd go for an new system, and quickly. I tried to get the PSTwo, all soldout locally. While in line at the cashier at my local game store, I kept on hearing "do you have any PS2?", then "no, all gone". Now, I'm just going to wait for some GT4/PSTwo package to comeout in 2005, and use my brother's PSTwo for now.....
 
I'd go newer as well. They've made nice improvements on the hardware that make it last longer and generally better for the user. Also, can you get games from the same online source you're getting the console from?

It's a bit hard to find good games around here (small town), thats why I thought of buying the older one, but now...
Maybe its better wait the Xmas, they make good prices then...or if i could talk to my friend to make it for $250, wouldn't be so expensive because of the 2 ds2 and the games...
