I really want to buy one and you can find many used Supras at a reasonable price in Germany.
The problem is that, I've heard a rumour in wich many of the Supras found in auction sites and car sales sites are in fact American-spec Supras that have a V8 engine. I find this odd since I've never heard of a Supra with a V8 engine. The L6 engine is one of the trademarks of the Supra range I believe, so, what gives?? The main problem is that if you are a European it will be hard to find replacement parts for these supposed American Supras. I was advised to request the chassis number to the owners so that I can check it to be a European model.
Is there any American or German friend that can confirm this?? Thanks in advance :)

sorry if my English isn't very good!

There has never been a V8 Toyota Supra.

The first model the US got badged as Supra (not Celica Supra) was the 1986.5 Toyota Supra "MkIII."

In 1986.5 it was sold with just the 3-liter straight six, but in 1987 a turbocharged version of that engine was added.

In 1993, the Supra was redesigned and became the "MkIV" model.

This model was sold until 1998. A 3-liter 6-cylinder was standard; a turbocharged 3-liter 6-cylinder was optional.

As mentioned supras never came from the factory with a V8 option, somebody could have custom fitted one, but I wouldn't see the point in that when you could upgrade the stock turbo(s) and make as much or more HP for probably less money...

Yet... :D

But yes. no Supra bar a converted one, or a 2004 JGTC race car, has a V8. The only differences to look out for are between Japanese and European models - but since the Japanese ones will be RHD, it should be pretty plain.

The European model has larger brakes and a larger intercooler, for 326hp (compared to 280). There's a distinctive central bonnet vent which is the only exterior clue.

Maybe someone took an SC400 V8 and put it in a supra... But who would do that?

Considering that the SC400 V8 was 250 horsepower (later 260), and even the base Supra had 220 horsepower, the answer to your question is 'no one sane.'

HKS's drag Supra (JZA80 (Mk IV)) also has the 4.0L V8 (1UZFE) engine in it, but also cant drive that on the road.

Ok guys, thanks a million, It was as I suspected after all! And to actualy believe that it was a Toyota Engineer that said this to me!!!! I must remember to never take the guy seriously again.
