Im ok with the controller, but I want to try a wheel. I understand that I will have to retrain how to drive, but I have only seen 1 wheel in stores (hiro racing wheel 3. $55). Where should I start? Will I have to relearn between each wheel? Is the time difference worth it?

Honestly, I heavily researched the G27 and its got the best compatibility with Gran Turismo 5. If you're buying it for that game I strongly recommend the G27. My times have not improved yet(bought the G27 5 days ago). I will tell you, with the paddle shifters and wheel, I am able to best my times. This is because I can hold the wheel at a specific angle while I make the turn as opposed to the controller.

No the DFGT does as it's the official wheel. However the G27 is based on your budget and is better as far as quality.

Get a DFGT. Can't go wrong.

1. Fanatec CSR Elite wheel- The overall best wheel on the market. $540
2. Thrustmaster T500RS- Good quality only for PC and PS3 comes with pedals.- $535
3. Fanatec CSR wheel- Xbox compatible similar tho CSR Elite wheel rim but has a GT2 RS base to save cost. $200
4. Fanatec GT2RS- Xbox compatible, Alcantara wheel rim high quality. $250
5. Logitech G27- Good cost PS3 and PC only leather wheel rim comes with pedals and a shifter. $300

If you just want to get started, DFGT all day.

Yea, if you have a good budget, you should get a G27. But if the price is a problem the DFGT is definitely the best choice as it's cheaper and takes lot's of punishment so it's a great beginers learning tool.

FWIW, I own a Fanatec Elite wheel and a Thrustmaster T500. At this point in my 33 year Sim career I prefer the T500 and Clubsport ver 1 pedals. In fact I would probably sell the Elite wheel at a good price. (I am getting old)

Start off with a paper plate in the back seat of the car when being driven.
Start moving feet as if your accelerating.
Wear mittens to wean off thumb stick steering and most importantly have fun.

If after six months your still enjoying it ( and not been sanctioned to an asylum or something ) purchase a wheel.

This. Seriously, I wouldn't go anything less than the DFGT from a starting point. Especially if you're just talking about GT5 and PC. If you want to throw in the Xbox 360 compatibility, then things get a little more expensive.

Like other's have said though, it's all based on budget and what you're willing to spend on. Personally I'm not too crazy about the CSR rim design. I thought I'd like the extra buttons and ergonomics, but I just don't.

I started on the DFP and even then I would have been happy upgrading to the smoother quieter DFGT.

If you haven't thought about it yet, think about a stand or seat. It's nearly just as important to get a good driving position.

Dumpy

I just ordered the DFGT, I'll try mounting on whatever I got for now til I can afford a decent stand.

As soon as you start playing with your wheel, you'll be hooked. You'll never want to touch a controller for a racing game again.

For starters it was the best buy you could make... best bang for buck.

I'm leaning toward getting something in the $200+ range but still thinking of saving a while longer (I pay cash for hobbies, don't go in debt for them) and maybe getting a CSR-Elite or T500RS.

I'm interested in why you prefer one over the other. Have you done a post about it or a video by chance?

I'm on the ISR forum as BK_NC if you've posted about it over there.

I have to be very careful when I talk about my preference of the T500 over the Fanatec Elite on this forum. I will send you a PM tomorrow alright bobby.

Well IMO you give good hardware advice... but the 33 year sim racing career bit got me laughing out loud for about 30 minutes yesterday... you got my wife worried about me for a minute until I was able to stop laughing and explain :D

I kept imagining you all suit up with an helmet and gloves playing pole position on the atari 2600 with a controller... (and that was 30 years ago TBH I dont know any arcade racing games before that let alone sims but Im only 40) maybe there was some sort of big mainframe with a dedicated sim or something that Im not aware of back then but it was a good laugh anyway

You just might get shot first and banned later :) LOL :)

DFGT may be the "official wheel" but the G27 is fully supported and less noisy. Its worth the extra money. Besides, the DGFT has the shifter directly mounted beside the wheel.

I don't understand why your preference would be something you have to be careful about. Having an opinion on something in a forum where people are asking for opinions shouldn't be something you have to worry about. That's sad.

To the OP. I would have gotten at least a G27 (and more likely one of the Fanatecs). I bought a DFP and the wheel is better than say a Madcatz wheel, but the pedals are just dreadful. While the G27 pedals are nothing to brag about, they are a huge step up from the DFP. Plus, having the shifter is nice and the paddle shifters are light years better.

If I had to do it over again, I might have just saved up a bit for a Fanatec CSR package. I got my G27 on sale for a good price ($199) and at the time Fanatac wasn't doing the bundles, so the grass is greener.

I doubt he would have any trouble with expressing his preference for a GT5 official wheel on a GT fan based forum over a wheel made for Forza... probably just some paranoia of some kind...
