I went to court about my speeding ticket.

As usual, I totally agree with vat_man. 👍 Not only is speeding around slower cars dangerous, but driving too damn slow in fast traffic is also just as dangerous.

And looking back, it looks like Klos summed up the safest way to drive the best:
I just keep up with traffic when I drive. No need to go any faster or any slower.

Yes, I do that as well. Doesn't work to well though. I leep up with the flow of traffic on the interstate everyday. Speedlimit is 70mph. Flow of traffic in the last two lanes is about 75-85mph. Can't always depend on the flow of traffic to drive. Cop could just decide to pick you out of the bunch.

So go in the slower lane. The speed limit here is 55/65. It's stupid. Who would drive 55 on a highway? They should up it to 75 or 80.

Yeah, I admittedly didn't think of that while posting, but now that you bring it up, I still think it's safest to go the same speed as the flow of traffic, but to avoid tickets, you're probably safe enough if you go at least 5 mph less than everybody else. (BTW, is the speed limit really 70 where you are? I've only seen 70 for freeways that are like in Arizona).

55 was ridiculously slow. 65 isn't bad, but I think most freeways are plenty safe with traffic going along at 75 and 80 for lonelier stretches. I don't see that happening any time soon though...

Yeah, and that's where the law is an ass, unfortunately. There have been studies done showing that drivers will generally drive at a speed they feel comfortable at, regardless of the posted limit (unless you live in Victoria, Australia, where they'll ping you for 3kmh over the limit - and there are cameras everywhere.

A god example is the Hume Highway between Melbourne and Sydney - on the Victorian side, the road's been engineered for 140kmh, but the posted limit is 110kmh. It's needlessly dull - and the RTA has the hide to yell at people about fatigue and to rest every two hours. If there was a decent friggin' speed limit it would only take two hours to get to the NSW border!
