In the lead up to the release of the new Subaru Legacy in 2003 at Fuji Speedway, Subaru had the cockpit racer that was on full hydraulics that would throw you around quite violently when running rally courses in a version of GT4 that was customized for Subaru at the time.

Not quite immersion, but as far as getting the car movements down, it came pretty darn close to making the game that much more real...

Yes, that would be one sweet toy to have in the garage. Or better, four of them.

Oh, i cant see the pics, but it sounds really nice :) imagine the Playstation 6 or something... :D wow!!! how would the game look like then??? if you can have a VR helmet on PS2 i think its quite cool at PS6 :d :D :D

yea ultimate toy i beleive would be a totally hydraulic cockpit which has unlimited 360 degree rotation and up to 60 degree inclination in any direction as well as up donw movement of a foot or two to simulate bumps and being airborne for a few seconds.. head gear would be must so that when u look at where the steering wheel is mounted.. instead of seeing the rubber force feedback wheel you see the 3d rendered interior of the car ur driving .... how much longer till this can be a reality!?!?

For home use? HA HA Ha ha ha ... that's funny.

They've already got things like this for commercial use. It's expensive to play though. Then if you look at things like airforce flight training simulators and army tank driving simulators you'll see some crazy mo-fo'ing virtual reality stuff. Millions of dollars worth or research and hardware.

According to the Subaru PR guy at the track during that Legacy day, he did say the simulator which had been developed by Fuji Heavy Industries for promotional use cost upwards of 3 million yen which made it almost as expensive as the new Legacy itself...

It was rugged enough that running the back straight of Swiss Alps with the double bumps in the middle was bone jarring enough that you hoped you wouldn't lose control.

if the whole setup can be had for less than 5grand i would gladly put one of these in the basement rather than putting a turbo or something on my real car.. but then again it will never happen because it will need to be REALLY popular for it to get to that point EVER...maybe they can make it into an ARCADE setup and then people could buy it? but then still there will never be online play with that ... sigh.. so even if i HAD silly amounts of money to spend on video games it wouldnt get me anything. ... hey i can dream right!?

Or you could buy a real car and take it on track days ;)

It would own to have one of those though, and ofc it would have to be USB so I could plug it in to my pc lol

Check the videos. Initially the price may be a bit high, but according to the dev it will fall, perhaps under $5-6k. Currently works with Live For Speed and Nascar Racing 2003. The dev is in contact with other software makers, who knows it may even work with GT one day(no guarantees).

Nice. It even has the racing seatbelts. 👍

Don't you guys remember the Playstation 9 commercials. They will have this eventually. It's been confirmed by Sony already!!!!

I was pondering about this the other day, and thought that the major thing lacking in GT (or any other race sim) was g-forces, to really simulate this, other than actual motion, would be to tilt a "pod" that had the driver and steering wheel. The only problem is that in high g corners, you would loose a sense of gravity.

No motion simulator can simulate Gs realsitcally yet. At least the real high Gs u experience when cornering very fast. I heard in F1 guys have very strong neck muscles and its for a reason. Real Gs would of F1 racing would torture the body of an unfit person. But If i was a worldly man i would literally cut the first piece of my pinky finger for 2 of those simulators with a 5 year replacement and in house service warranty

GTPlanet, I know Uncle Harry came up with his "What if!" topic, but here's a "what if" of my own. I don't know if virtual reality is still around, but thnk about this. Imagine that you donned the traditional VR headwear, the VR gloves, maybe had a peripriael (like a steering wheel, presumably), and you could see Gran Turismo in a much brighter light. Imagine if instead of 6 to a track, you could face as many as 24 or more. How about the cars looking more real and hearing the engine behind you if you are in a mid-engine car? Everytime you bang into the wall, you feel the impact to your body and your car. As you go fast, you feel the speed of your car. Whether your car is a Mini Cooper, a Toyota Supra, or a Pagani Zonda, you'll feel like you're actually in the car. Then imagine looking left and right and looking inside your car.

This is a special interest topic that encourages your imagination and visualization. Whether or not VR technology is still around and abundant remains to be seen. But if Gran Turismo went virtual reality (VR), how do you think PD should pull off this old style of gaming?

By the way, don't think this stuff would be cheap. A full VR system can cost AT LEAST $1K, maybe even $10K. So imagine wiring up your junky room to play Gran Turismo (it means any GT. Either 1, 2, 3, or the upcoming 4). So, if Gran Turismo went VR...
The problem with VR is that most headsets make the users feel sick or give them motion sickness, unless they're the really expensive ones.

And besides, the craze of Virtual Reality is kind of over now with developers realising that there's not really a market for expensive, motion-sickness-inducing video game peripherals.

Do you race?

The problem arises when the signals you brain gets from your eyes and inner ears don't mesh. That motion simulator I linked to has been tested by a couple people who get sick from watching ot trying to play video games on a stationary screen and they didn't get sick while using it.

As for head tracking, there are many PC games that support it in 2D, using Natural Point's TrackIR. They recently introduced an upgrade that allows for full 6DOF tracking, unfortunatly only a couple games support it as of yet(no driving sims so far). I can only imaging that will take the 301 to still another level.

On of the biggest limitation in gaming right now is displays. Let's be honest, they've probably seen less development than any other area. Any normal monitor/TV offers a very limited FOV, which is part of the reason games lack a sense of speed. Using a wide FOV gives that sense, but does drop realism somewhat. Another issue, more important with flying sime than driving, is minimum pixel size. Anyone into flying sims knows that objects heading to the hrizon aren't displayed in a manner like you'd see IRL.

Most head mounted displays, from that $200 one on eBay up to ones even costing $5k+ still offer very limited FOVs, not much better than a monitor. What we really need is something like the SEOS HMD 120/40. This thing offers a separate view for each eye, with 40deg of overlap and a total FOV of 120deg. Complete with head tracker, it still only ways one kilo. The only downside is the cost- $65-70k. Ouch.

What the hell? I'm going to be honest. I wasn't expecting this old thread to come back. To the one who gave this thread a Phoenix Down (Final Fantasy 3 (FF6 in Japan)) and brought this thread back to life... I'm speechless. But if you want to make something out if this, go ahead.

There is another very recent thread from a guy that has the sony HMD and he has tried it in GT4 and IT WORKS!!!!! head rotation and all!!!!!! I only saw the thread the other day so its around somewhere recent.

GT4 needs..

OMG!!! that is EXACTLY what i was talking about!! WOW!! now.. lets look at it from a business perspective... if you were to say buy 8 of these things and put them into an arcade room at a popular mall.. how MUCH $$$ would you guys be willing to pay to play with this thing for 10 minutes? or 5 minutes?! i would EASILY pay $1 per minute of this extacy!!! freakin awesome!! maybe i should start a business.. take out a loan for 240 thou... buy 8 of these.. network them together and run LFS on them.. i wonder how long it would be before i file for bankrupcy or open up shop in other malls?!
