What do you think would happen to PD and their GT franchise? This not exactly about them going to another system by leaving sony, but more of a developer losing it's home company. Will sony still have rights to GT? I mean it's not like Sony can use it anymore unless sony supports a 3rd pary position to allow it's official games to be developed for other companies..

The Playstation is a cash cow for Sony.
I think we'd likely see Lady Gaga elected president '12 before Sony backed out.

Yeah, even though the PS3 isn't doing as well as the PS2 did, Sony are still earning billions of ££'s :)

sony is using it gaming division to take the brunt of the bad economy .without it sony would have gone under..

Although I seem to remember that initially they lost money on each unit sold...

I doubt they'll be leaving any time soon.

They did, but they re-coup that money on game sales. (Sony get as small amount from every PS3 game sold)

With the # of sales recorded currently, I think that PD would simply buy the rights to the PS3 in order for there to be a console for their product (GT Games) because without it, PD would manufacture disks without the consumer having something to play it with:dunce:

I think he is referring to this article, http://games.ign.com/articles/121/1216322p1.html which I won't even toss a grain of salt toward's.

if true at all it would be Microsoft .. think about it sony JUST bought sucker punch less than a year ago and rummer's tell that Sony has already told many first company producers to produce for the ps4...
Just lets do some basic thinking
sony OWNS
media molecule
Naughty dog- going strong
eat sleep play-half of incognito, releasing long awaited twisted metal
light box- half of incognito
sucker punch- going strong
Polyphony digital - going strong duhhh
Exclusive rights to insonomic-going strong
guerrilla games- going strong
and evolution studios.. - doing quite bad atm
and santamonica studios - publishing many games under there name and going very strong as well
just to name a few
micro$oft has
... Microsoft game studios?
epic
valve and heck even turn ten are not owned by Microsoft not even bungie belonged to them just had a exclusivity deal..

I'd think this article would be more likely. And by the way, the PS3 is selling at just about the same rate as the PS2 did.

That's the worst article I've ever read on IGN and when you take their game reviews into consideration that's really saying something.

As for Sony pulling out the console market, absolute nonsense, they've just launched PlayStation Vita, it's hardly the actions of a company ready to walk away from one of their biggest money making ventures, the console market. The only way we'll see either Sony or Microsoft quit is if one of their future consoles is a commercial failure and with both platforms each having a loyal following that doesn't seem very likely.

The Playstation is most definitely not a cash cow, Sony makes very little, if any profit from the Playstation Division, and not even counting the huge losses they took on in the early days of the PS3's release.

i honestly believe that thanks to ****endo Sony and Microsoft will be rushing out the consoles..
but on a good note the wii out dated P.O.S graphics will be a bit better than the ps3's * the screenshot of zelda looked like a mid graphics current gen game making the console effectively 4 -5 years outdated like thee wii witch never surpassed the original xbox's graphics , sony any half completed ps4 Frankenstein or xbox will have current specs.. possibly being able to run crysis like graphics easily . as we have seen the ps1 introduced us to full blown 3d with basic models and what i called "shifty polygons" the ps2's polygons were stable and had stable texture streaming aswell and good character models etc. the ps3 had exteamly detailed models and textures and no existence of polygon tearing yet the current gen consoles have to chose between either hig res textures , high res models or a steady frame rate and good AA
most games pull of 2 * pollygones and steady frame rate with low "dynamic textures" otherwise known as the textures that are 2d yet affect light like 3d polygon's would . some games can pull of 3 or 4 * ps3 exclusives* altho if a game could pull all oft his of we would have an amazing looking game..now add teh fact that we could have extremely detailed polygonal environments and models good AA , ALL Highress textures and you have yourself a life like game.. of course with more room for animations and tidbits.. but what i can tell you is the leap from ps1 to 2 and from 2 to 3 wont be so evident

I think that has a lot to do with PlayStation software coming under an entirely different division from PlayStation hardware, so the actual figures for the PlayStation brand as a whole will be distorted in annual reports.

Sony already confirmed that there will be no PS4 in the coming years:

http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2012/01...ew-playstation-at-key-trade-show/?mod=WSJBlog

"Sony said it does not plan on making an announcement about a new home console at this year’s E3 videogame trade show, deflating expectation that a successor to its PlayStation 3 will be on its way soon.

[...]

During a roundtable with reporters at the Consumer Electronics Show, a reporter asked a question to Hirai attributing comments to the head of its videogame division, Andrew House, that there would be no announcement about a PlayStation 4 at the show.

Hirai, who appointed House for the job, said they are not talking about a new home console now and that they don’t plan to do so at E3.

"Andy (House) is absolutely right in that we are not making any announcements at E3," Hirai said. "I’ve always said a 10-year life cycle for PS3, and there is no reason to go away from that."

You can discuss this article and that topic in general in my thread here.

Speculation. Where would video game "journalism", or the sorry excuse for journalism that it really is, without it?

Have you ever heard of Blu Ray?

[yes.]

Do you know why?

[uhh...]

Because of Playstation 3. Otherwise HDDVD would have been the new format. I believe it was Beta by Sony that failed to VHS, but that might be wrong. The point is long, long, ago Sony made the Blu Ray to fight the HDDVD, which had 1/3 the capacity but utilized amazing features. I believe Sony's PS3 release along with contracts to companies such as Warner Bros/whatever, only allowing Blu Rays and no HD DVD forced them into victory.

Not 100% on the facts, just trying to remember what is very old news. But the point is, no, PS3 set Blu Ray in motion, which alone makes the PS3 worth it's value to Sony, and even if they lose money on PS3's, they make it back from video games and non vg Blu Rays.

Blu-Ray was one of the main reasons I have a PS3 right now. Overall when I compared the two systems side by side, even if the initial entry price of the PS3 was higher, it offered more value. I think at the time to even get HDMI on the 360 you had to pay extra, never mind the hard drive thing.

The most important thing that Sony did with the Blu Ray Group was to secure Disney. I know a lot of gamers may be cynical, and say "who cares", but Disney does have that kind of drawing power. They also made sure that the 007 collection got released on Blu Ray. Those are two MAJOR libraries in the Blu Ray camp, and while not decisive, it was an edge.

Very true. I think Union is talking about the PS3 itself, hardware only.

Enter Paul Ausick...

I do believe that combined with the continuing incursion from the smartphone makers, Sony may have waited too long to get on the latest train to leave the station. Sort of reminds us of how the company and it's walkman got blindsided by MP3 players.

There is much more to the PS3 than the hardware itself, software accounts for 70% of their income (8/5/11). They did 72.3 billion yen last year (886 million dollars) So your right, it's no cash cow...

I'm not sure which I'd hate more; No more Playstations or Lady Gaga as President.:scared: ~Turtle

If either company dropped out, then we'd still have a great series to look to.

Both Forza and GT are awesome. Win/win.
