If there was a proper training mode for racecraft what would it include?

Imagine if there was an expanded section of the license test mode that was dedicated to teaching you proper racecraft. A section that would include things such as flag rules, overtaking techniques and fuel strategy. Can you think of something that you would want to see in such a mode?

Here are some things I would like to see:

1. Overtaking in braking zones and various corners when going side by side. Who has the right to the corner and the racing line? How do you make a clean pass or let someone through safely? What can you expect when having an opponent right behind you?

2. Defensive driving that teaches you about the dangers of weaving, hard braking and the wrong racing lines. How do you safely block your opponent and gain the right momentum?

3. Driving safely in traffic with focus on positioning, communication and predictable driving behaviour. How do you get through by reading the situation and how do you let someone pass that has a much better position?

It should be part of License Test.

The game should put you in different scenarios and judge your performance not on time, but racecraft. Overtaking, keeping cars behind, passing slower cars, the lot.

It should also have a live AI instructor telling you what you do wrong, as you do it. Not just flashing "FAIL" on the screen when you touch a car, tell them what they did wrong specifically. Too fast, went into a gap that wasn't there, understeered into them because you were out of control, etc.

An instructor sounds like a cool idea. Maybe you could get feedback while watching the replay also? Like the replay pauses and the instructors gives some feedback while you see the situation clearly.

Ferrari Challenge tried implementing an instructor way back in 2008. You started at Fiorano in a F430 and Tiff Needel gave you feedback as you drove around. It wasn't brilliantly executed but the idea was there, and it worked on a basic level.

With the better consoles and the budget of a first party title vs Eutechnyx who were probably working with about £7.50, PD could make something really good and in-depth which also covered all the racing scenarios as well as just your solo performance.

Starting with these topics by Scott and providing players a specific scenario/test to learn each would have helped me immensely in the beginning...I would do them again emphatically if PD could make it engaging and fun...like the current Licenses, but better, richer, with feedback and suggestions as already mentioned above.

And the idea above about a replay feature with feedback, brilliant!
