Okay, its a long title....

in July i am going to California for a month. I have family and friends that live there and they are always asking us to move out there permanently...better quality of life and weather and lower cost of living etc...

well we were supposed to go out there last jaunary but it got delayed...i have been before but it was many years ago..

i am having second thoughts about living out there which i discussed with my wife about missing family and friends, the footie and my work collegues...

if we decide after our trip that we like it we will start immediately on selling the house and packing up and getting the paper work ready...

what would you miss about your home country if your job or other circumstances sent you abroad?

There are things you'll miss initially, like friends and family. The people you interact with daily. But those are quickly replaced with new people.

The things you'll miss long term are cultural things. Holidays, foods, dialect, certain recreation ...

Well currently my best friend of 20 years is doing something similar to that, He has lost touch with a number of "friends" but has in fact replaced them as LM stated. He still keeps in touch with me and two others. . . so you will find out true friends from it. He went through a ton of culture shock for the first 8 months. . . He has lost touch with a ton of things in the US here, and it seems that when he finally decides to move back to America he is in for some culture shock. . . Good luck with it Turbo. . . It is a tough decision, but the right one will be made, just remember that :D

i would probably miss being able to see laker games locally.

oh yeah and of course the decent weather

I would propably miss all the four seasons we have here. And of course, family & frends.

I would miss the family. But it also depends where the hell I go.

Thanks for your encouragements....it is something that scares the bajeezuz out of me....i have always liked a stable lifestyle and its the uncertainty that is scary....

my wife has lived in other countries before and has come to the UK only 4 years ago and now she wants us to move closer to her family which is understandable...

i suppose its just one of these things that you just have to do, dont think too much about it and throw caution to the wind....

one thing....will my PS2 work on 110v? if i get an american PS2 my games wont work... hey i have over 100 games...thats expensive.

seriously though, i will miss my family, especially my brother....

It would be the Mountains, no question! Oh, friends and family to. ;)

the rugby probably. Good old Welsh rygby, not some kick to touch English/French BS.

I'd miss my family. Other than that there are many places I'd rather live besides here, but they are all within the US. I don't think I'd ever want to premanently relocate outside the US, except Hawaii, if that counts. I could see myself living in Victoria or Vancouver, BC, though. And If I lived there I'd be no farther away from my family than I was a year ago, before they moved to Arizona.

Lower cost of living? better quality of life? Hmm... ? I don't know about these. Maybe as long as you don't move to the "bay area" a.k.a. SF area since they say everything revolves around SF.

Anyways, Yeah I'd say I would miss home... I suppose my next move could be to Pasadena, Ca. if I decide and am able to get into AC. I'd really like to move out of this house though. Oh country right... I suppose when I'm finished with school I could get a job in another country since this industry (industrial design) is every where.

He's moving from Glasgow that is a big difference. And I imagine the quality of life i sbetter, and probabily the cost odf living is lower, he could save a fortune in petrol/gas/petroleum bills alone.

From the US to Canada...I miss the old neighboorhood and I miss the education system from there because the Ontario Premiere screwed everything up for my graduating class :(.

Only thing: speaking english. I'm terrible at different languages.

I think you'd find it a huge culture shock. The American people have such a different outlook on life to the Scots. Not in a better or worse way, just different. However, you'd have to offset that against a welcome that would be surprisingly warm.

It's funny that you mention the PS2 thing, because small things like that are likely to hit you over and over again. You should be able to get a transformer.

Still, not having to speak a different language will ease the transition, should you choose to make it.

And you'll still be able to access GTP...

Well, right now it's about 80 degrees F in soCAL, with no wind and just the right touch of humidity, and it feels like Spring (all of the local plants have flowered). Lemme tell ya, it's beautiful right now. :)

To answer your question, I'd probably never live in a different country, unless the U.S. got taken over by Communists or something equally bad. If I did move though, I'd probably move to Australia/New Zealand... Britain (and Europe in general) is too damn cold for me, Thailand's a good place to visit but a no-go to live in my opinion, Japan's too freaky, and I wouldn't want to live in South America or Africa. That leaves Australia and N.Z., which have somewhat similar climates to California and a close enough language. :D :p

Piss, I wouldn't care, as long as I went to a real country, like Spain, or Iceland.

Incidentally, I've always wanted to go to Greenland.

I've always been annoyed that Greenland is mostly ice, and Iceland has a lot of, um, green. And when I say "always", I mean since the 2nd trimester of second grade (yes, I do remember).

fanx for the replys everyone...

i will miss the mountain bike trails and routes that i use here, but i have heard that calif has a few good ones too, so that is a plus for me...

my family and friends is a harder issue to solve, but i will just have to deal with it...

the little things like playstations do matter....i have however decided to purchase an american console and get it chipped to play my pal games...or maybe i will sell the kit here in the UK and get the dosh...:D

Well I know about this first hand.I moved from Houston Texas about 3 years ago.Now I live in Belleville IL.(stupid small towns) I guess I miss my friends the most, but at least all my family lives here.Besides that I probably miss the night life, and all my old hang outs.
Oh,and definitely the racing scene.I strongly believe that Houston has the best Illegal street racing scene East of Calli, but anyway,I guess this place is kind of going on me,but I think I'll always prefer the big city life.

To anyone that going to be going though a similar experience as me,all I can say is you'll be surprised what you can get used to,as long as your not alone.
