For some people, size is everything. For some people, a 17 inch desktop replacement notebook is just too damn smal. Some people 8 pounds of laptop is irrelevant. Those people *clearly* want a 20 inch beast weighing in at over 18 pounds. Those same people also want to be able to carry it around with them. Dell has you covered with the XPS M2010.

Now, that thing isn't exactly what you'd call portable. You're also sure as hell not going to take it out on the train... but what would happen if you did?

The server is horribly slow right now so check the Coral Cache link @

Any idea why it costs over $2,000 to upgrade it to 4GB of dual channel 533(!)Mhz RAM?

The M2010 is quite expensive. I realize that you are paying for its mobility, but the base price is asking for too much IMHO (especially when the base model only comes with an 80GB 5400RPM HDD).

And yes, I am also wondering the same thing as Ebiggs.

I guess there's something for everyone out there. I just got an Acer Aspire 3100 (this is the first post I make on it :D ) and the 15" screen is more than enough for me.

Because it uses laptop RAM, and only has 2 slots. You can't get 4 - 1GB sticks, you need 2 - 2GB sticks. So, not only are 2GB sticks of 533 DDR2 essentially impossible to get, but when you do find 200pin laptop DDR2 in 2GB sticks, it is VERY expensive. So, they basically put that option on there as a laugh, because I'm sure VERY few people will fall for it.

PS - here is a link to Crucial selling a 2GB stick of 667mhz, just so you can see what I mean.

I think its good that there giving laptops bigger screens because that was always the problem, the screen. I think Apple are also doing a 20" laptop but I cant be sure.....but where does portable become not portable..... soon you will need an A3 sized bag to hold them!

The only problem is they cost a bomb..... all laptop stuff like memory is a rip off compared to PC stuff and you cant easily fix them by yourself.

I like it.. I really do.. It's probably more of a design studio than anything - I doubt its "portability" will see much use..

I think it looks very very sexy - both open and closed...

The 17" MacBook Pro is the biggest they offer as of right now. There are rumors that down the road, they might offer a 19" version, maybe when they get updated to Core 2 Duo chips. But, as of right now, the 17" is the biggest Mac notebook.

Samsung actually already offers a 19" notebook right now. Its the M70. It is a notebook first, but the display can be detached, and mounted to a stand to use like a desktop. Kind of nice, really. Somewhat portable, and with a display that big, would be easy to work with once at work.

Well, this thing weighs 18.3 pounds and is not battery-powered, so I wouldn't exactly call this thing a laptop. Now my question is, what market is Dell going after with this thing?

You can't fold an iMac and carry it around, but a similarly configured Apple iMac cost over $2000 less than a Dell XPS M2010!

Thats a really smart idea! Does the screen communicate wirelessly with the base (like those smart dock panels for PC's ages ago, what happened to those btw?). Its perfect for business because you can get to the office and set it up like that with having to plug in a keyboard, screen etc..... my only niggle about it is that it could look abit more stylish..... but its early days!

As for Apple, I think I was talking about the 19" Macbook, I couldnt remember whether it was 20 or not,..... but I bet for the next lot of high end Powerbooks they will have a 20" offering seeing as its starting to become quite common.....

Hahaha, yeah soon its going to be way too heavy (big screens need power!) plus the bigger the panel the easier it is to twist or put pressure on it and with the base so thin it will snap like a wafer! The plus side of a bigger screen though is that you can spread out the components under its footprint making it thinner.....

The people they are aiming it for its graphic designers, people in advertising, photographers, architects, CAD or computer generated designers.....all of them on the move! These people need big screens and im sure travel alot to onsite locations around the globe... and they are willing to pay and can afford top dollar!

I know! Laptops are crazy prices! Unless you truely need portablility there no need, Its funny, PC's are getting smaller (like the shuttle and mac mini) and laptops are getting bigger! Your better of buying a mini atx style pc and get more spec for you cash!
