Hello to all!

I've always bought and drove only premiums, but now I want somewhat new to experience. So I like to try standard cars now! :-)

There is a one thing I'm worried - about physics. Does standards and premiums has same amount (or quality) physics? I remember driving Toyota Minolta and Mazda Furai - they drove like in GT4 (simple, without too much character or feedback). I've heard that some of the cars are both standards and premiums. Is there any information about comparison between them? Also UCD is very small to me. I try to find ZZII or XJ220 about a month without a luck... :-(

So any suggestions about standard cars? Can you talk about your experience of standard cars?

It seems like whole new game for me! Thanks!

Well, what I know is that standard cars are just cars that is imported from GTPSP and upscaled in resolution.

Yeah but I think GT5 physics are much more complex than in GTPSP right?

The driving model for both premiums and standard are identical. So the feel of the car will be the same. Just drive a 350z premium and a 350z standard. They will feel and perform the same. Only thing missing is a cockpit view.

I have like about 4 or so of the ZZII if you interested in a trade...:sly:

That's a good sign! Thanks!

Some of my favorite cars to drive are standard. You are definitely missing out.

You've been missing out for sure! Check the OCD(online car dealership) it changes every week or 2. Usually there's a theme like DTM's or Rally cars for instance. And they are priced at half price with 0 miles.

No worries on driving dynamics.

^^^^^+1 to those who have said it: you're missing out big time. On most of the game actually. Most racing cars and old cars are standard models and some of them are real gems. Try the E-Type Jag, the impossible to pronounce Alfa (...Carrozzata da Zagato...), the M3 CSL, GTR and GTR Race Car, the ZZ II, RX-7 LM, Motorsport Elise, and I could go on and on.

There really is no difference at all in the physics. And as most of the Premiums are new models, they are (on average) much heavier then some of the older cars. But these are lighter and more fun in a way (no matter what you do to the M3 Coupé '07, it will never hang with the CSL).

Enjoy working your way through the standards, you're gonna love it!

EDIT: Just saw your profile picture. It's a standard :)

Of course you are missing out.

Can ask why you thought the physics model (driving) would be different between Premium and Standard versions?

@ OP

Yes, you are definitely missing out. Many standards are a blast to drive, for instance LMPs (Sauber Mercedes), Rally Cars (Lancer Evos), DTMs (Alfa Romeo), productions (Pagani Zondas), and it goes on and on... Sure, standards doesn't really look detailed nor realistic as premiums, but many of them and their performance can easily make you ignore that. And there's no difference of physics between premiums and standards, they all operate the same. And yes, the UCD can be a pain sometimes, as it always spawn the same makes (NSXs, Skylines, 2000GTs, etc..), but you'll get something eventually. You can use this link to find out what cars you'll get in the future. It actually works pretty well.

Oh yes you are.
Physics are the same, some cars got messed up (Saleen S7/no grip on sport hards at all; Pescarolo C60 Hybride/no grip; Jaguar XJ220/after full engine and body overhaul it can't even reach 320km/h/200mi/h) but some of the best cars in GT5 are standards (Sauber C9, Toyota 88C-V, Toyota GT-One, Audi R8, Toyota 2000GT (!!!), Nissan R390 GT1 and many more.

I had the intention of ignoring the standards when I first started playing and now I'm ignoring the premiums. lol. There are some really bad standard models (in the looks department) but I'm pleasantly surprised at how many look quite nice in game. I've got 520 or more standard cars so there must be something to like.

Yeah missing out BIG time.
You have been playing a game with 200 odd cars to choose from. You just added 800 more to it.

Some examples are:
FGT
Several LMPs
Pretty much all the DTMs and rally cars
Escudo
400 or so MX5s
etc. etc....

XJ220 isn't what it's cracked up to be. Looks great, corners well, but can't hang with the best cars at it's PP level. 5 speed sure doesn't help.

I've found most cars in the game, premium or standard, will work well within certain categories and some are just good overall..M3 GTR for example, Nissan GTR, 458 Italia etc. But if you race something like 450 pp sports softs you'll be looking at smaller, cheaper cars and finding there are lots of competitive cars, that there are mass quantities of in the UCD, that'll hand with most anything from the NCD. FF is a category of it's own, but some of them hang with the best at their pp level as well.

Nascar? standards?

I've only started buying and using Standard vehicles as well. What I've discovered is that the fundamental physics (in GT5) is shared both Standard and Premium. The difference isn't so much about Standard/Premium but how well the car's physics is modeled.

For example, the Audi R8 LMS feels as good as any of the racing/racing-modified cars in the game but some standard model doesn't quite have the details especially when it comes to suspension. I've yet to try cars that are duplicated with both Premium and Standard models (some Super GT race cars and a lot of Nissan and Hondas), though.

And I'd suggest driving with the HUD off- it's a total blast.

Well, you miss 80% of all the game cars...

From this post i assume you've never driven an oreca viper.

GET ONE. I'm not asking, i'm COMMANDING you to obtain said car with my iron fist of authority. Then you will have your answer.

Caps help guys.

Of course you are missing out.

Can ask why you thought the physics model (driving) would be different between Premium and Standard versions?

There is a possibility that the premiums cars have more parameters to input into the physics calculations which in theory would give a more accurate feel of the car. But this is not always the case, I mean look at the MP4-12C, it's supposed to handle bumps really well with it's active suspension but PD have not replicated this is any way. This is mainly because GT4's physics engine was a lot simpler and may have had less input values to portray the car's performance into the game. (Don't quote me on this, it's purely speculation)

The standards are perfectly fine to me, but I use bumper cam rather than cockpit view. Using cockpit is pointless in my opinion unless every car has it, I wouldn't want to be changing view everytime I get into a new car, i'd have to get used to it.

Try comparing how the MP4 suspension feels to that of the F1 or the Gallardo (or any other cars). Personally, using my G25 wheel (although not quite at par with T500RS), I can feel the difference. Driving the MP4 on the Nordschleife, I can sense something's going on with the suspension. It doesn't make the car that much easier to drive (if you've been reading the review of the MP14, that happens to be case with the all pre-production models) but still a discernible characteristic.

Well, thanks to all you guys!
I've found that haunting for some cars is very fun itself! :) It's like you are car collector. Another thing is standard cars are expensive too! I even can't imagine how you can afford all those cars without seasonal events!

And I finally bought XJ220, and found some cool black Ford GT without stripes :)

Also I noticed that not all standards can be painted. (Mazda Furai for example)

Now my point is some of my all-time favorites:
Mclaren F1 GTR
TVR Speed 12
Toyota GT-One
Bentley Speed 8 LMP (if I remember it correctly)
ZZII
Toyota Supra RZ '97 (duh! It's being our driving horse since GT1!)

Now I feel that driving only premiums are very boring thing! They already bored me for some time...
Again - thanks to all! (sorry for English)

EDIT: Just saw your profile picture. It's a standard :)

Ha-ha thanks! It's BMW Fina GTR, but not long-tail one ;)

I'm glad to hear you have gotten over your phobia of standard cars. You were missing out on 80% of the available vehicles.

I love premiums, so for me it's more of enjoy the race (at visual point), rather than racing. But my biggest complain to GT5 (compared to perfect Prologue) is cockpit view itself (to me not useful), and those bad shadows. Now I can't enjoy premiums at full their potential and drove from bumper cam.
It's time to switch to standards! ;)

I had the intention of ignoring the standards when I first started playing and now I'm ignoring the premiums.

I'm the opposite. I had absolutely no intention of ignoring standards, and seeing that I was mainly driving using the bumper cam, I couldn't really tell the difference. But I somehow have really taken to the cockpit view now, and I really don't like driving anything else anymore. Now I largely ignore standards. I mean, for driving, I still collect them.
