Right. This question has been floating around for ages, and i thought that it should be sorted out.

Is downloading music for free illegal?

Well, i thought it was. Why? Because you are vialating the terms on that piece of music. If you want a certain song, you have to pay for it. By using a file sharing service, surely you are not paying for the music, and are therefore stealing. Stealing is illegal :dunce:. Well, i did think this was the case untill i was informed by a friend that "if you aren't providing the files for sharing, you aren't breaking the law.". I have now realised that this is complete crap, and that i currently have a laptop sitting in pcworld's repair center with around 100 illegal songs on it's hard drive :dunce::ouch:. So, am i right on this? Downloading music for free is illegal because of the simple law that stealing is illegal.

Is this true?

Yes, it's true. Stealing music is just as illegal as providing it to be stolen. Have a look in the "Do you buy CDs?" thread for a complete discussion on this topic.
