Hi all, I basically skipped GT4 because it was a joke so I haven't really been to these forums much since the GT3 days. Anybody from those days still around? What have I missed? What's hot in the GT5 drifting world?

My copy of GT5 was jacked by Best Buy on the day it came out (pretty sure a store employee took it), so I just now finally got a replacement copy. I've only just started getting into it, but I love it so far!

P.S. Here's a little piece of nostalgia for the oldschool GT drifters:

Wow, it's been a long time, Pergatory... (I used to be called "Silviadrifter")

We never did our drift video together, so maybe we could finish that, huh? :sly:

Anyway, glad to see you back. 👍

Alright, a familiar face! :D What's up DR, you're right we still need to do that collaboration! I still have a bunch of the footage you uploaded for it!

Looks like it'll be much easier in GT5 than it would've been in GT3. Maybe we can finally do some of that parallel drifting we wanted to do so long ago!

I still have a bunch of my own drifting footage from GT3 that was never used, mainly stuff I had recorded for that collaboration right before I kinda lost my steam. I was surprised there's actually a lot of good stuff in there that I never showed to anyone! I've uploaded a few to my YouTube account if you wanna check 'em out. (Follow the first link I gave and view other videos from same user.) One is in the same 240SX doing SSR5, and the other is a brutal Deep Forest II run in a Toyota Chaser that I tuned obsessively. I even manage to hit the huge double apex. Actually there's a really hard double apex in all three videos I posted, come to think of it. The SSR5 route has a pretty nasty double apex right after a hairpin that's really hard to carry speed into unless you hit the hairpin just right. I like double apexes, they separate the men from the boys :)

*EDIT: I have a question actually, if you don't mind. What's with the "GTP_" before everyone's username? I seen a thread talking about transfering cars from your main to your GTP account, and then I started noticing everyone has "GTP_" on their PSN name. I figure there must be some reason, or are they just showing their support for the site?

I would love to get that footage from you. I lost that data ages ago.

I'm very much looking forward to it.

We had a lot of fun with GT3. GT4 had some glaring physics flaws (tire code mostly) that effected the drifting community especially. GT5, however, seems to be almost spot on.

I've just started playing through the career mode. So, it's going to be a week or two until I'm online at all. Looking forward to seeing you out there, though. We'll have to collaborate on some settings, tutorials, videos, etc...

I remember that GTPDC 5 contest. My entry was horrible, but I think I still managed 2nd or 3rd.

I checked out your vids on Youtube. Really brings back memories. I agree about double (or triple) apex drifts. Something very satisfying about linking two or more corners together in one fluid arc.

This should answer your question:

Once I get home from work, I'll poke around and see if I can upload those vids for ya :)

Yeah I'm in total agreement with ya there! I'm very impressed with the physics in 5 so far. I also literally just started career mode too, last night I beat N-B license, Sunday Cup, and a couple other races. So we're probably in the same boat there. Once we get situated, I'm definitely game for sharing some settings and the like!

Actually that's the thread I found that led to me asking the question in the first place. It doesn't really explain what the GTP prefix is for. This line in particular caught my attention:
"Still, the benefit of using the GTP tag far outweighs not using it."
What benefit are they talking about? Do they aware prizes for certain accomplishments or something?

Thank you sir.

To take part in any sanctioned GTP races/contests, you have to sign up for a "GTP_" tag. You'll have to run a qualifying lap with a specific car/track to find your place on the GTP Registry (Divisions 1-4 divided into Gold/Silver/Bronze).

Holy crap, faces(well names really...) that I recognize!!! I am not sure if you will recognize me though. But damn, we need more elders to get back on.

i didn't played much of GT4 but may i ask why you guys hate GT4 in drifing? cause from what i played on GT5 the physics seems more similar to GT4 rather than GT3 and older GT.

Like DR mentioned, the tire physics were very messed up. With a realistically tuned car, as soon as you broke traction, the tires changed from rubber into some unknown material which violates physics. It's almost like they were hydroplaning on the smoke they created or something.

The result was that every time you broke traction in a corner, you immediately lost all acceleration. If you gun it, it'll still lose speed and you'll either have to come out of the drift or you'll stall the corner. If you lift even for a fraction of a second to induce more oversteer, the snap understeer would send you spinning toward the outside of the corner. There was no margin between the two, or it was just impossibly small with a properly tuned car. Drifting at 80 mph felt like drifting at 200 should feel. GT5 is much more realistic, the oversteer is linear and controllable. It's not a total death trap like it was in GT4.

Of course you could overcome it with settings, you always can, but that's not realistic. It turns the car into a boat, like that Viper in the "Is this even possible" thread. It looks great to someone who hasn't done much drifting, but to someone who has, watching it is like nails on a chalkboard.

The physics in GT4 for grip driving were close to GT5 and fairly realistic. It's just that once you broke traction that reality went out the window and it became some kind of cruel joke.

Crawling out of the woodworks from everywhere we are haha, I was wondering when some more drifters from the older games would appear...
WE KNOW YOU ARE OUT THERE, YOUR SPORT IS CALLING YOU!

PS: Welcome back pergatory.

Pergatory have you tried drift in both drift mode and free run mode have you notice any different in physics?
Honestly, I haven't really tried the drift mode yet on GT5 mainly due to one particular problem. I haven't been able to find something decent to mount my wheel to, probably going to have to build something. Anyone have any suggestions?

Back in the GT3 days I had an L-shaped couch, and I literally used an old dented AE86 fender to mount it to, and sat the fender over my lap with me where the wheel would be. It was ghetto but it worked, and I kind of liked it because the fender had sentimental value...

At any rate, I've been enjoying drifting a little in the races with the DS3, it feels pretty natural so far. Can't wait to see what it's like with a wheel and a proper drift car! I'm not in a huge rush though, just getting through licenses and such. I'm Lv12 right now.

I finally found my Sileighty and tried out the various modes. Pretty sure the physics are different, but not by much. The handling seems almost identical, if not identical, when you're sideways... but the tires don't seem to grip at all if you let the car's weight settle on center. In drift mode the car flicks at the slightest hint that you want to go sideways.

Is abit dissapointed that they decided to made it this way, is it same with gt3 which also had racing and drift mode system too?

GT3/GT4 did not have drift modes.

GT5:P was the first GT game to include the drift mode (:yuck:).

;)

There was the small "Drift mode " when you selected a car. If your talking about that.

I'm mean after user have chose a car in the arcade there are 2 option racing and drift. Not separated individual mode like GT5. I remembered I had always chosed drift mode back in GT3 not even once for the racing. So I don't know if GT3 also used different physisc for both option for GT3 as GT5.

I saw this thread and just had to post. I was never really well known or anything but I remember a lot of the names mentioned hehe, especially Monkey D/Project D! Can't wait to get a new GT5 setup going.

I thought you left, lol

Yeah I haven't been around in a real long time. I'm actually heading to Europe though for school here for about another half a year so it will be a little while before I make a big return to the GT world, but I've been playing a little bit lately so I thought for fun I'd check the forums again.

Yup nk4e got it right, that's what I meant. In it is these 2 mode also used different physics too?
Who knows though we have a thread talking about Drift Physics
