As a few of you know the Super 'Scort in on the auction block.
She's gotten old, and unfortunately feeble.
A friend that I work with, lost her husband about a year ago, and has been hanging on to his truck. (which she can't drive as it is a manual shift).
She's mentioned it a few times and for some reason I wasn't interested.
Now in the throes of great turmoil in my life. I'm shortly going to buy my first pick-up.
It's a 1996 Ford Ranger Splash. (Google up "Ford Ranger Splash" and go to "images")
It's bright yellow with a standard cab. And the deal sealer: It has less than 60,000 miles on it.
As it has been mostly sitting for the last year, I plan to drop it at one of my local Ford dealers for it's 60,000 mile check-up and an oil change.
Then I'm going to do some minor "personalization" (Shift knob, Seat Covers, moving the "Pac-man" out of the Escort into the truck...)
The catch: we're busily trying to get our house on the market. And then buying a new, bigger hoose. Once that is accomplished, I'll be gettin' the truck. So I may have to wait 6-8 weeks. That's only a problem cause I have to drive a Geo in the interim.

This is auto news! I thought the Splash was only extended cab?

Good luck with the truck and a new house - and post pictures of the truck when you get it! (don't post any pictures of the Geo, though)

If I can find the digital cam, and I can figure out how, I'll do just that.
I also was rather suprized when I went to test drive it, and found it was a regular cab.
But the little "dude" was wearing all the proper adornment, and the right bed. It also seems very close to the ground.
The only "drawback" is that it doesn't have the V-6. But it's fairly quick.
It'll be bunches quicker when the shift knob isn't popping off in my hand.
It also has the stock am/fm with cassette, and an aftermarket Clarion 6-disc CD changer.👍
I'm looking at it as my "sports" car, that can haul two jet skis.

Nice! Mid-90's Rangers are decent trucks, and pretty sturdy.

"Turmoil in my life"... "Larger house"... Are congratulations in order for Gil and Mrs. Gil?

Actually, Just moving in to a larger space for all our crap, and kidlets. You would not believe the amount of space 6-teenage boys take up.
My "computer nerd kid" has 4 computer hard drives in storage, two up in his room and nine monitors over at his grandma's house.
Plus, the hoose the wife likes has a 3-car garage. That will decrease the car shuffling neccesary to get out in the morning.
I currently have to think very carefully about where I park at night so that I'll be able to get out with out having to move a bunch of cars. (there are 5 cars in the driveway and on the street when everyone is home. )
No new little people on the horizon though. The baby factory is gone.
The next little people around here will be grandchildren.

Actually that means:
1. Turning 40. (Yes it was 2-months ago, but I'm working into it rather slowly).
2. Expanding Crap at work. (More patients per nurse, and our complaints and those of the patients are falling on deaf management ears.)
3. Getting this house ready to sell.
4. Selecting and purchasing a new house.
5. Getting ready for son #2 to graduate from High School.
6. Son #3 has been playing guitar in the High School production of "Grease". (they've been practicing for the last 6 weeks, and he doesn't drive yet, and needs to be taxied.)

Rangers are sweet truck. My girlfriend drives a 1994 Ranger STX, I think. Its a pretty nice truck, runs great. Its got quite a bit of power in it, its the bigger V6. Plus she has a small lift, some bigger tires, a few engine mods. Its a tough truck to, we've off roaded in it a few times.

Good luck with the truck Gil I know you'll love it.

Alright Gil! If you need a rifle rack for the window, just let me know....I got an extra one out back. :)

I'm slowly loosing my rear diff on my ford, so I need to sell it quickly so my pickup days are numbered. :)

Life is rather busy, yes?

Indeed.
This house went on the market yesterday.
My wife is constantly reminding everyone to clean up behind themselves.
The handyman is running himself crazy with the projects too big or complex for me.
We have three houses on our radar. All are nice. But the one I like best (the cheapest of the three, though $197,500 isn't cheap in my book) won't be finished for nearly 2 months. I don't believe this house will be on the market long, as it's literally a stone's throw from the High School, Intermediate School, and Elementary School. The others in this price range are across a busy 4 lane highway.

As for the rifle rack...I do want one for the space below the window, behind the seats. I want to use it to keep my umbrellas out of the way.
I'm actually looking at the Ranger as a "Sports Car" that happens to be wearing a "truck" costume.

Maybe you can work out a rent-back deal where you get 2-3 mnonths in the house, paying rent to the new owners until the other house is done?

That is an option. But after all the work I've done/am doing, I really just want to get the heck out of here before my wife sees one more thing that needs to be done.
Seriously, we are considering that as we have a high influx of military folks that won't actually be moving here till July or August.
Plus, with all the stuff that we've moved into storage, we can move what's left out of here in a day.
At this point, I'm stressed.

Update: The house is sold. It closes on the 18th. Unfortunately we have to be out by then, no rent-back.
We've made an offer on a new house, and the builder is finishing it to accomodate us.
It should be finished by 15 July. It'll be a true 5-bedroom. I don't get my three car garage, but I'm having a third "spur" added to my driveway so all the cars will be off the street and the garaged cars will be accessible.
We are currently in my Mother in Law's house. It's a pretty tight squeeze, an it'll be tighter when she returns from Colorado.
We may be able to get the truck before the new house closes...
I've already been to www.wetokole.com to select some seat covers...

New update:
Didn't take Contractor time and bank time into account.
The folks that are buying our old house, their bank is slow and they won't be able to close till the end of this week.
My new house may be ready by the first week of July.
And if the closing of the old house goes as planned, I'll be truckin' by sthe weekend.:D

Well, that's probably better then, right? You don't have to spend as long with your mother-in-law (not that that's bad, but just that it's cramped) and you can move in earlier.

I truly hope so. I'm not opposed to living with my MIL. She's actually off in CO at the moment.
I just want to be in my own space.

Gil
I just want to be in my own space.

Who doesn't?

I've been living with my in-laws in Colorado for the last week. See, Gil, it's not the exact same scenario, but we're connected - oh yes.

After reading your posts in the "Tuner trash talk" thread, I'd say that we might even be channeling each other.

Okay, looking at the date I started this thread, it has been a long haul.
4 and a half months later, I have finally got my truck.
It has a few little faults. But it is 8+ years old, even if it has low miles.
The rear bumper is starting to rust a little at the corners. But Stylin' Concepts can send me out a rear roll pan for around $100.
I'm debating whether or not to leave the running boards on it. Not because they're ugly. They actually look pretty cool. But the back of the left one rubs on the front of the bed.
The other thing that I've found is that this little truck has a more prodigious thirst than I had expected.

Running, it is almost eerily quiet. But it rides fairly smooth for a truck. It does let you know about any bumps in the road.
Overall, I'm am quite pleased. Everyone that's seen it says it "looks like me".
