I am sitting here, packing up my (now dead Ps3) to ship off to sony. The old girl gave me a few great years and just died completely this week.

I talk a lot of crap about the duping/dupers in GT5, but if i hadn't made a back up of my game file (yes, to buy cars and not lose money) I would be totally without hours and hours of game play.

back up your files, it can happen.

Copy that. I have been "backing up" my save files(post 1.05) ever since my buddie's PS3died while I was playing it.

Sucks man... And yes... Its a good idea to back up your save...

Hope you get a new PS3 for free then, which will last for a long time ;)

Good job. After all the horror stories most of us are backing up. I know I did and it only took a couple seconds. Speaking of which I think I need to
back up again. Bought too many cars to count.

Can I ask how you buy cars and not lose money? Is this a save game, buy car, gift to another account, restore back up, and re-gift process?

How did it die? What symptoms did it have?

Yes, I would like to know what exactly happened too. Because I have a thought about how/why the ps3's are dying...

Could it just be the hard drive that's going bad? If it is, would you just be able to buy a new one online, and then replace the old one that died?

What exactly does a PS3 with a yellow light of death mean? If it's not the hard drive, what exactly happens that the PS3 dies?

I back up my save data every time I quit the game as my PS3 is very prone to braking as it has done it so many times before.

i have been hearing this happening a lot now, both on here and talking with people online

i back mine up every time before i start the game

It's all b-spec's fault, particularly the endurance events...

My ps3 died recently too and I shipped mine out yesterday back to Sony. To answer your question, my ps3 had no prior symptoms before it went out. Literally one day I was playing as normal and it just shut off. It would only come back on for if I was lucky a few minutes before same thing. I had religiously backed up my saves in fear of this very thing so I believe ill be ok once I get the new one back.

On a side note, my fatty ps3 had been a trooper. It was a refurb fatty 60gb that was over 4 years old. It has been to 2 different countries with me as well as 5 major moves over this time. Oh, this is the best part. About 5 months ago I was drinking a homemade milkshake and accidentally knocked it off my desk and it literally dumped right in to my ps3. Thought that was the end however after it dried it came back on with no problems until recently 5 months later lol, true story there.

My PS3 YLOD 2 weeks ago and I followed some youtube.com video and reflowed it myself and she has been humming along quite nicely ever since. I had no symptoms, it just decided to shut off and not give me my disc back, so I had to fix it :)

I had only one prior symptom, I was trying to watch a bluray (social network) and it froze mid play and wouldn't load the disk any after that. Ps3 worked fine at the point and after the audio problems i had with sunshine bluray(known issue) i blew it off. Mine is a few years old (40GB) and i was playing it the next day and it shut off. then i would push the on button and it would go green, yellow, red x2.

I dont think its the harddrive, i my guess is the fan is jacked and its having a hardware fault code of somekind. anway, $99 and im sending it in to sony... i have no desire to crack it open.

Also, it has been on 100% of the time since December 25th.

Everyone gave Microsoft grief (and rightly so) about RROD but the YLOD other things on the PS3 sound just as bad. Mine(40gb slab) is still working but unlike my 360 it won't be getting repaired for free when it dies.

Well, if it breaks, Sony charges around $120 to repair it if you don't have a warranty but if you look around online on certain sites that have lists of craigs, hint hint, you can lower that $120 down to a moderate $50.

lucky you. glad you have a back up. start from the scratch is really painful.

Yeah man back it up or else, I know a guy who played Through FIFA 10 got his Virtual Pro up to 99 and then lost his data. I had the same problem with shift but thankfully i didnt go to far in it.
