New LG 42" HD Plasma. Got a great deal on it with the after-christmas sales. So far I'm loving it, the picture is great, its massive, and provides a great cinema-style experience especially when teamed with the 5.1 surround system.
DVDs look great, and the PS2 looks great too, although I'm told it could look better with some component cables, which I'm looking into right now.
On the subject of component cables, right now I've got the DVD player hooked up with component, but I'm just using ordinary RCA cables to do so. What I'd like to know is if its ok to substitute red, yellow and white RCA cables for the red, green and blue components. Is there any physical difference between the cables?

PS - ^ GT4 running on the big screen.
And yes I will find another home for that lone speaker sitting next to the TV.. I might see if I can rig it up so that the centre channel audio comes through the mounted speaker on the TV.

You might want to head over to The AVS Forum and search for some calibration settings. I hope you enjoy your new TV.

That's how I've got my DVD player connected, seems fine.
I don't know if there's any difference in the cable other than the color molded or painted onto the connectors.

THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN COMPONENT CABLES AND COMPOSITE

price :)

components cost more for the same thing. composite cables may have less shielding, but with a short run you will likely not notice a difference - especially if you keep the cable away from power cords - if you have to cross power cords do so at a right angle.

Ahh, I see. Thanks for the response, I expected they were the same cord after all.
Now I'm hunting around for some good component cables for my PS2. :)

Haha yeah, ever since I got it I've had an urge to get some sort of nextgen console to play on it.. :p

I got that exact same television. I paid £2000 which included a glass stand, DVD recorder & 3 years exta warranty. I think the LG models have the Samsung components inside.

👍

We got ours for quite a good price, being the after-christmas sales.
My mother had a bunch of gift vouchers for the same store (David Jones) saved up, so with them we were only about $1000 AUD out of pocket.

Have you put anything HD through yours? I'm curious to see how it goes with a 720p and a 1080i signal, as I'm yet to purchase a nextgen console so I'm curious how it does.

BIG BIG difference dude.

composite = red: right audio channel
white: left audio channel
yellow: video

components = red: red
green: green
blue: blue

I hope you understood that.

What I was asking was whether there was any physical difference between composite and component, and as someone has said in this thread, the cables are physically the same, the only difference is colour. So, no difference at all, really.

I run my Xbox 360 in HD through it. Excellent picture quality.

Not exactly. There are several different types of cable made from different types of wire and/or wire construction, with different ratings that are used for both composite and component, and yes, they can be interchangeable as all these cables are designed to transmit analog signals.

Just keep in mind that any signal interference will be more noticeable when viewing a clean source through component... and most cable sold as "composite" generally has lower signal ratings and less shielding than the same cable sold as "component", as they usually use higher rated wire and add extra shielding around cable sold as component cable.

As for color, I assume you are talking about the color coded interconnects, and not the color from the signal itself. The color coding on the interconnectors is simply for convenience, each cable in a set should have identical construction. Colors as seen from the signals will be very different, with component being the better fo the two.

While component and composite can use the same analog cable, where the difference lies is in the actual circuitry for each input/output in the player and the display. Good quality component circuitry is a big step-up from composite.

The same principal applies to HDMI and DVI, in that for the video, they each can use the same type of wire, only that there interconnects are different, and most importantly, the onboard circuitry is vastly different... HDMI processing is significantly better than DVI, although not many displays or sources take full advantage of what HDMI is capable of doing.

Of course you can only get 480p/576p and HD via component, not composite. Of course for the PS3 there's HDMI too.
So for GT4 to be played on the PS2 in 480p or 1080i you need component. For any game with progressive scan (Tekken 5, Resident Evil 4 etc) you need component to play in prog scan.
However most PS2 games with prog scan tend to be NTSC (US/Japan). I'm uncertain how many PAL games have prog scan. Certainly GT4 does'nt.

@Digital-Nitrate - Ahh, I see. Well I am already amazed by how crisp and bright standard DVD movies look already, so I don't think I'll be rushing out to buy some new cables soon.
Ahh, you mean PAL GT4 doesn't have 1080i OR 480p? :(
