Well today is the first day without my buddy. You don't realize how much you have come to rely on, and take for granted, something simple like the presence of a particular person each day. In fourteen minutes I've already twice, unconsciously/mentally refered to my friend in the context of work or questions for the day, only to realize I'm on my own now, and correct myself.
I was talking to my wife yesterday and telling her how I am a little embarassed over how much this change is affecting me. It's surprising to me, but that's what always happens when you take things for granted.
In an embarassing way, the only analogous situation I can compare it to is being dumped. As silly as that sounds, the last time I've felt anything remotely similar to this was the last time I was broken up with.
My friends desk is right next to the door so before and after every break, lunch, etc., I'd walk in and greet him. I spent lots of time each day sitting at his desk, or vice-versa, talking about our kids, plans for the future (of which his have started to come to fruition first by getting out of here), and just B.S. small talk. I never appreciated what an essential part of five out of seven days of the week that was. I guess I'll be adjusting for a while; getting out of here myself would help a lot.
I guess I've had a pretty static, sheltered life for a while.
At any rate, thanks for the kind words and commiseration, everybody. I'll be done with this thread now. Time to stop whining and move on.
