I'm using Vista speech recognition software to write this...

Hey mom looked no hands, this stuff is pretty cool, but the little kiddies still need to learn how to type in high school, because it will not completely replace those skills.

It will however, make writing long emails seem less daunting, even to the best of typers, because sometimes your hands just get tired.

Anybody else try this stuff yet? The software came with my new Gateway laptop that I bought from Best Buy the other day.

It's really pretty fast, you just have to go back and edit sometimes when it doesn't understand what you're saying, but it hasn't done that on this sentence yet.

I will give it a rating of 9.5 out of 10 stars. Well worth it on long documents. But you will have to proofread and do corrections. Speaking clearly is the key, slurred speech, talking like a hillbilly, or erratic talking patterns won't get you vary far.

In theory, could you hook it up to a line in and get it to write down what's coming through that? Because that'd be handy for dictaphones etc.

Apparently there is a bug that if someone sends you a voice clip, they can tell it to delete files or folders, and if the speakers are close enough to the microphone, Vista will do it!

Ouch! I guess you'd have to constantly use a headset or something.

Don't macs have some version of this? Obviously it isn't so stupid, but it only recognises about 4 phrases (What time is it, open *blahblahblah*, close *blahblahblah* etc). It's horribly hard to get working from my experience, though. Maybe they improved it in the G5 stuff.

Hey I was just kidding about that, if you always talk like a hillbilly, it will work just fine for you. It takes a good hour or so to setup, you have to go through some exercises and let it let learn your voice, and you're speaking mannerisms, and then you can go freestyle!

Notice how it misspelled your before speaking, in the paragraph above. That will be easily correctable but I thought I would leave it in their just to give you an example, and also notice it just spelled their wrong, twice.
 
Well, I fashioned a makeshift microphone from an Eyetoy camera tonight and had a bit of a go at the Vista Speech Recognition.
And yes it was fun, but oh so tedious!
I ended up giving in and using the keyboard, but yeah it was pretty fun.
I didn't really give it enough time to learn my voice properly, but it didn't do a bad job for most things.
Can't wait till they refine the software a bit more in the future, THEN it'll really be something special.
 
Sooooo that feature wouldn't do it for me then 'cause I doubt it would understand words like: WADDYATAKIN' ABOUT! FOGGETABOUT IT! HOWYOUDOON'! DONWORRYBOUTIT'

Is all of this speech recognition configurable, like you can change start listening command to "computer"......then "open itunes"...... is that possible?? Because if you can assign commands (like open this program when I say this) is would be amazing for things other than typing, like in bed you could control music and video for example...
 
Well, you can't configure the 'start listening' command, but yes, you could lie in bed with a headset/microphone/whatever and say "start media player", and go from there.

Its quite nifty!

COOL! and this is standard on all Vista's right? sounds amazing but you do probably have to speak really clearly either wise it could probably delete something!
 
I don't know if its in Vista Home Basic, but don't buy that version whatever you do, its missing all the good features.

The Speech Recognition is definately in Home Premo, though.
It is pretty damn cool, when it actually recognises what you're saying, but it does get frustrating when its not picking up what you say.
After you've used it for a little while it starts to recognise your voice and understand the way you say things, and it'll be more accurate.
