For this tech class in school i'm supposed to build a bumper like object to reduce the impact of a model car crashing into a wall... I was thinking about using something of the consistancy of play dough or maybe thicker surrounded by plastic.. But before that i was thinking of really soft springs, or plastic...You guys got any ideas? thanks for reading.

if its spring loaded, then the car would bounce backwards. The play dough would get smashed up, but it would absorb a lot of the impact.

or how about some sort of object that easily crumples? like, poke the side of a soda car and it dents in, right? well take something like that and mount it on the front of a car. by the time the object fully crumples, it should be going pretty slow. now a model car... as in 1:18 scale type thing? now just find some object that can crumple easy and it is cheap. i have also seen styrofoam in the bumper...

If it just needs to stop a model car, how about some of that memory foam from mattresses or pillows. It is dense enough to cushion the blow, but still has plenty of give to it.

Let us know what you decide to use.

And we want pictures. :dopey:

Memory Foam....Thats a good idea.....I sell it through the company I work for, 'Adhesive Backed Foam Tape'...

Now Are aesthetics an issue ?

depending on how much money you got to spend on this, i would put oil filled shocks like off of a rc car, then soften them up by putting something thinner than oil in them, then it will adjust to the amount of impact, a soft impact would have a soft bumper, and a harder impact would have a stiffer bumper, just like the shocks on your car

Memory foam is good because it's a simple, reusable system. Plus, I've dropped an egg from over my head onto a piece on the floor with no problem.
