1) First complete Story Mode and then play Challenge Mode.
2) Or play Challenge Mode along with Story Mode.

That depends how you want to play. If you want more cars unlocked for the story do challenge mode, but if you want to change to those cars you'll lose time in the story mode than you would if you just used the cars given to you in the story mode
