Feeling the "need for speed" I decide that its time to have a go at Indianapolis. Looking in my sparse garage, I spot the Minolta Toyota, and check out its specs. It seems too strong, so I return the Minolta's keys to the rack and continue looking. There in the back of my garage is a nice looking silver Mercedes-Benz CLK-LM Race Car from 1998 that was recently won from the AMG Driving Academy. I think that the CLK-LM has a chance at Indy since it does very well at La Sarthe.
I ask my pit crew to check it out, and they say that it is barely used and does not need either an engine overhaul or chassis rebuild. I have my pit crew load the CLK-LM onto my trusty hauler and get it shipped to Indianapolis for the uncoming 500 mile race.
Once I get to the track, a quick tech inspection shows that my Mercedes CLK-LM has 834 horsepower (after an oil change), a PP value of 687, and weights in at 1000 kilos. The competition looks strong so I have my pit crew install both race soft and race medium tires, but will start the race on race softs to see how it goes. Gearing is important at Indy, so after some testing I settle on 242mph for my transmission's top speed.
Sitting on the starting grid are eleven worthy opponent's:
1) C.Kaczmar -- BMW V12 LMR
2) O.Nowak --- Pescarolo Courage - Judd GVS
3) T.Peters --- Audi R8 '01 - Red
4) E.Olsen --- Pescarolo Courage - C60 Peugeot
5) K.Daniels -- Pescarolo C60 Hybride - Judd
6) P.Brooks -- Audi R10 TDI Race Car
7) M.Yoshiak -- Audi R8 '01 - Playstation
8) B.Urner --- BMW V12 LMR
9) H.Aoki ---- Pescarolo Courage - Judd GVS
10) S.Semyona -- Audi R8 '01 - Yellow
11) E.Haapalai -- Pescarolo Courage - C60
12) me ----- Mercedes CLK-LM Race Car
The flag drops and we begin a 200 lap journey.
For the first 25 laps, after a drive thru the field, I have a nice entertaining battle against Peters in the red Audi R8. On lap 26 I lose the lead to the Audi and continue chasing from second place until lap 30, when I pit from about 4 seconds back on somewhat worn RS tires. While in the pits I decide that to stay with the Audi R8, I will continue to need RS tires, so I ask my pit crew for another set and take on 45 liters of fuel.
When I exit the pits, I've fallen back to last place and I'm a full lap down to the leading Peter's Audi R8.
On lap 35, I catch and pass Olsen in the C60 Courage and take over 11th place in the race. This is quickly followed by passing Haapolai in the other C60 Courage (since they were running together) and take over 10th place in the race.
On lap 39, I catch and pass Daniels in the C60 Hybride and take over 9th place in the race.
On lap 40, I catch and pass Brooks in the Audi R10, so I'm now in 8th place.
On lap 41, I pass Aoki in the Courage - Judd and see that I've reached 7th.
On lap 42, Nowak in the Courage - Judd pits, and I find my self in 6th place without the need of my fancy drafting skills or fender rubbing thru the corners!
On lap 43, most of the leaders pit, so I easily pass Peters in the Audi R8, Yoshiak in the other Audi R8, Semyona in another Audi R8, and Urner in the BMW V12 as they all pit, and I reach 2nd place in the race, behind the leading BMW V12 (Kaczmar) who has a 30 second lead over me.
On lap 44, the leading BMW V12 pits and gives me the lead of the race! Yeah!
Checking the scoreboard, after everyone has had their first pit stop, Peters in the Audi R8 is back in 2nd place, a full lap behind my steaking Mercedes!
I can see that he is having a nice battle with the 3rd place Daniels in the C60 Hybride because they swap places a few times. 4th place is the Yoshiak Audi R8, and 5th place shows Semyona in the other Audi R8.
On lap 60, just as one of the Audi R8's catches me (I'm not sure which one), I pit for a second time and put on a fresh set of RS tires and top up the fuel.
When I exit the pits, I've fallen back to 5th place in the race, about 30 seconds behind the leading Peters in his Audi R8. 2nd place is filled by Daniels in the C60 Hybride, 3rd place shows Semyona in another Audi R8, and 4th place is taken by Yoshiak in the last Audi R8.
On lap 71, I catch and pass the Yoshiak Sudi R8, and take over 4th place in the race, now only 24 seconds behind the leading Peters Audi.
On lap 74, Daniels in the C60 Hybride pits and I take over 3rd place in the race, now only 20 seconds behind the leader.
On lap 79, I catch and pass Semyona in his yellow Audi R8, and take over 2nd place in the race. Recently, running some very good laps, I been able to narrow Peters lead to only 15 seconds.
On lap 84, I catch and pass the leading Audi R8 driven by Peters, and take over the lead of the race again!
I think that Peter's may have just pitted his Audi at the end of this lap, because as I begin lap 86, I see that Kaczmar in the BMW V12 is in 2nd, Semyona in the other Audi R8 is in 3rd, and Peters in his Audi is in 4th place. 5th place is shown as Urner in a BMW V12. My lead over the 2nd place Kaczmar in the BMW V12 is shown as a full lap.
I pit again at the end of lap 90 for tires and 65 liters of fuel. When I exit the pits, I see that I've fallen into 2nd place a few seconds behind Daniels in the C60 Hybride.
On lap 92, I catch and pass Daniels in the C60 Hybride and take over the lead of the race again.
Peter's Audi is in 3rd, Semyona's Audi is in 4th, and Yoshiak's Audi is in 5th place.
By lap 110, my lead is 10 seconds over the 2nd place Peters in his Audi R8, who has dropped Daniels in the C60 Hybride to 3rd place.
By lap 120 my lead over Peter's in the Audi R8 has grown to 16 seconds, and I'm feeling comfortable, but my tires start to go away, so I pit for tires and 62 liters of fuel.
When I exit the pits, I've been dropped back to 4th place, a full lap behind the leading Peters Audi R8 (man.... pit stops take forever!). Semyona's Audi R8 is in 2nd and Yoshiak's Audi R8 is in 3rd place.
On lap 124, Yoshiak pits his Audi and I take over 3rd place in the race.
On lap 126, both the 1st place Audi and the 2nd place Audi pit, and I take over the lead of the race again!
During this pit stop cycle, Kaczmar in the BMW V12 jumps up into 2nd place, though he's a full 24 seconds behind me. In 3rd is the Daniels - C60 Hybride, 4th is the Peters Audi R8, and 5th place shows Semyona in his Audi R8.
On lap 139, I catch and pass the 2nd place Daniels - C60 Hybride, so I now have a full lap lead over the entire field!
I pit again on lap 150 for fresh tires and 62 liters of fuel. When I exit the pits I've fallen back to 3rd place, some 34 seconds behind the leading Audi R8, which is being driven by Peters. 2nd place is shown as Semyona in his Audi R8. Yoshiak in in 4th with his Audi R8, and 5th place is taken by Kaczmar in his BMW V12.
Lap 155 is complete, and I'm still 30 seconds behind the lead Peter's Audi R8. We both have to pit one more time, plus I need to find 30 seconds in order to catch Peters and win the race. Is my Mercedes up to the task?
As I begin lap 160, I'm still in 3rd place, but I've narrowed Peter's Audi lead to 22 seconds.
On lap 163, I catch and pass Semyona's Audi R8, and take over 2nd place in the race. I'm now 17 seconds behind the leading Peters Audi R8.
By lap 166, I'm only 10 seconds behind the leading Peters Audi R8.
On lap 169, the leading Peters Audi R8 pits and I drive into the lead of the race!!! Peter's Audi falls to 3rd place as the Semyona Audi takes over 2nd place.
On lap 170, the 2nd place Semyona-Audi R8 pits, so Peter's Audi R8 climbs back into 2nd place and Daniels-C60 Hybride climbs to 3rd, and Kaczmar in his BMW V12 climbs up into 4th place. The Semyona-Audi R8 falls all the way to 5th place.
On lap 177, I get dogged and then passed by two Playstation Audi's, so this is a sure sign that my tires are shot, so I enter the pits for the final time.
The moment of truth is here...... Will I lose my lead???
While traveling down pit lane at the race governed speed, I notice that my Mercedes CLk is heavily damaged on its right rear fender, and the rear wing is slightly bent. I begin to worry that my CLk is aerodynamically challenged!!
When I exit the pits, I've fallen back into 2nd place, 11 seconds behind the leading Audi R8 that is being driven by Peters. The Semyona-Audi R8 is in 3rd.
Should I panic? Somewhat worried, I drive hard for the next ten laps, being very precise not to overdue the entrance to the turns, but also trying not to lose any speed by slowing down too early.
By lap 190, I've chewed into Peters-Audi lead, so I am now 7 seconds back in 2nd place. Can it be done?
By lap 194, I'm now 5 seconds back, but I think that I can just see the leading Audi R8 ahead on the track as it makes each turn.
By lap 198, I've narrowed the Audi's lead to 2 seconds!!!
At the end of lap 199, I reach the rear bumper of the leading Audi who has been battling with another lapped race car.
At the beginning of lap 200, I catch and pass the leading Audi R8 and take the lead!!! A little paint is traded, but nothing to get the track steward's attention.
During lap 200, twice I have to employ some judicious blocking, but I'm able to cross the finish line with just over a car length lead!!!
After 2 hours, 34 minutes and 40.449 seconds, I have won with a 0.189 second margin over Peter's red Audi R8!!!
Semyona's Audi R8 takes 3rd, and Yoshiak's Audi R8 takes 4th.
Credits of $247,000 and XP of 750,893 are awarded, and a nice looking black 1966 Jaguar XJ13 Race Car is mine!
Enjoy the racing!
