Infiniti to go entirely "electrified", phase-out starts in 2021

I don't think the Detroit News got that headline right. Electrified models are different than all electric models. Typically when a company refers to "electrified" then mean either an electric option for its models or a plug-in hybrid of sorts.

It's probably a smart business move though since other brands that fit in the Inifinti range are going that way too. If they want to compete, they'll need to start offering cars like that.

Yea, you're probably right:

Still, it is quite something to say that they won't offer a purely ICE vehicle. I'll change the title. Infiniti (Nissan) has some of the truly great internal combustion engines on the market. It's wild to see these companies seemingly walk away from that amazing technology.

All these announcements of manufacturers going electric when they mean going hybrid is quite disappointing.

Infiniti said "electrified", not "electric".
INFINITI Motor Company will introduce new vehicles with electrified powertrains from 2021
But it will also include some pure electric cars:
New INFINITI models will offer electrified powertrains from 2021
INFINITI will launch its first pure electric vehicle in the same year

I was told in an email sent out about the yearly plan that Jaguar as well (included Infiniti in the email) plans to go towards nearly fully electric cars after 2020. We’re not far off with Lexus pushing towards more Hybrids; Lexus has another SUV coming that will be either V8 or Hybrid power plant around that time.

Yes I know, but I don't think it's something worth shouting about. The press usually get the wrong end of the stick in reporting these announcements. It's actually quite sneaky, it's like the manufacturers are almost hoping for the press to make 'that' simple mistake so the news spreads quickly.

This is why you should trust GTP's press team, we get it right! :p

Why not? Cars that use electric motors in addition to the combustion engine don't have to be ecoweenie things like the Prius, all mpg and no fun. They can be rather good (in fact, take Infiniti's existing Q50 Hybrid).

And Infiniti operates in a premium/luxury sector. Hybrid engines are great in those types of cars, because it reduces ambient noise - decreasing the NVH and increasing the perceived quality and comfort. It has to be seen to be adopting those technologies to attract customers.

That aside, it's a lot more worth shouting about this than yesterday's rolling anachronism from JLR.

Really?

Gah... treed.

The Prius got rolling in 1997. The Model S got rolling in 2012. And in 2018 we're getting announcements from major brands that their ICE-only platforms are dead? Call me crazy but it seems just absolutely wild to me. This shift is really picking up speed.

One of the articles I quoted said that nobody should be buying a new car that's not all-electric in 2025. Really? In 7 years we're expecting gas stations to service fuel to basically used-cars only? I dismissed that notion as silly at first, but... I have to admit that it might actually be true. It's eye-popping. Maybe I'm just getting old.

I don't dislike Hybrids, I just think announcing that your making them is not THAT big of a deal. There's announcements and then there's announcements. A manufacturer totally binning the combustion engine across the board is a big story.

It already makes them - well, two of them. The announcement is that it's now going to make them for every new vehicle. That's quite a shift from petrol and diesel across the board, plus a couple of kooky hybrid saloons.

It means that from 2021, anyone who's interested in a quiet, refined, BMW/Mercedes/Audi small/medium/big/crossover box will now have an Infiniti they can buy instead. Something like a QX70 Hybrid would stand a chance of doing some notable damage to X5/Q7/GLE sales in Europe.
