Initial approach to car collecting / gameplay when starting GT7?

I took advantage of the current sale of GT7 Digital Deluxe Edition and purchased my first GT since GT2. I loved GT1 & GT2 growing up on PS1/PS2 but then switched to Xbox and for nearly 25 years have been playing Project Gotham Racing, Forza Motorsport, and Forza Horizon although I admit my gameplay for all fell off and the last decade I felt the games were pretty sterile. Having purchased a PS5 Pro I finally am back "home" and how fun it is! I took other thread suggestions I found and played "My First Gran Turismo" and got the free 18 cars and have been playing GT7 for a couple of days having gotten the B license and mainly doing the Cafe menu book challenges to progress in the game. Because I got the deluxe edition I'm sitting on about 3.7m credits but I saw in other threads people suggested saving money for cars that are offered to you as limited time availability cars via the random spins... so I've been only collecting via free cars other than the Honda Fit they made me buy when the game started. Should I be saving my credits as I am, buying used or new cars... what was your initial strategy in the game both in terms of progression and building your garage? Thanks, I'm excited to be back in the GT world after 24+ years, the love of car culture and its history, weird music, and expansive ways to play the game are all what I remember just with a hell of a more pretty wrapping. The time limited car thing doesn't apply anymore as they changed it so that invitations are permanent in an update.

Personally I only bought what I needed to progress, though with cars that have been added recently a lot of my early decisions don't apply. The Fit will take you so far, certain expensive cars come up regularly with the random spins as do the majority of gr4 and gr3 cars you might need so no point wasting credits where you don't need to. On my second account my strategy was to do the licenses as you get rewarded with cars, then missions as again they reward you with useful cars.

Engine swaps add a new element with some of the big money maker races (LeMans half hour 'endurance') being best done with engine swapped cars, they let you put LeMans prototype engines into various cars like the r34 skyline and RX7. The bmw e46 m3 also gets a good engine swap.

Having said all this there are a couple of cars that can walk any event up to certain PP levels, the mines skyline will do pretty much everything between the 700pp/800pp stuff and the gtr cup the Honda 80s F1 car will make mincemeat of Gr2, Gr1 and the pp950 events, the bmw e46 will do most euro events, the evo 9 most Japanese events the Focus RS most American events. All 3 get good engine swaps later that make them competitive in 700 and 800pp events.

Certain events are best left until you can do engine swaps as the AI cars are massively overpowered and sometimes a full 100pp above the limit for the event. World touring car 600 especially as it locks you into a pp level. The euro 400 is another one where in later races it seems to be more like a euro 500 event but the pp lock isn't applied there.

But you need to go above collector level 50 to reach those permanent invites, so if there is one you want to have early in the game, you should not miss the opportunity if you get the invite
There is also a spin off called My First Gran Turismo that rewards you with a decent collection of zero mile cars.

@boldblue737 : you don't "need" to buy any car, and you will get plenty with the wheel, weekly event regularly offer a 6* car ticket that's guaranteed to bring you a car above 500k

So if you don't want some expensive cars or don't care about collecting them all, just play the game and you will win many cars.

And at some point in a few years (or less) you'll be able to buy even the most expensive ones that can't be won.

Just some info on game unlocks. Important to complete Menu Book 39, this basically unlocks all the tools you need to make credits so you can get to collector level 50 and 70.

Multiplayer and Power Pack unlock when you complete GT Café's Menu Book No. 9, "Tokyo Highway Parade".

And one thing also : seasonnal menus and extra café menus require you to have the car in your garage, not just in your collection, so I'd advice to only sell (when you'll be able to) the cars you have more than one in your garage. Just in case you will need it in thr future to collect some bonuses.

And when you sell cars, you get between 1/3rd and half of its "retail" prize, so it is not very efficient way to collect credits.
 
If you don’t want to buy duplicates of cars they’re definitely going to reward you with during game progression, here’s a list of prize cars compiled by @Famine , one of our site’s administrators that documents all cars, guaranteed and possible, rewarded for in-game progression so far, although the list’s missing the Super Formula SF19 powered by Honda. I’ve bookmarked the link and it’s quite handy:

I've actually seen some cars sell for up to 75%.

true, you can be patient and or lucky, but as the value goes up and down and you don't know how high it can go... plus sometimes I have 3 or 4 cars to sell and the highest value reached recently does not stay visible long enough, so I would have to take note on paper, so... I try to sell when the price is high, but it is not always the highest

I'm also a player returning to PlayStation after skipping the PS4 era completely. After playing about 202 hours according to My Page stats, I've earned 80,581,285 million credits, of which I've spent 67,458,985 in cars... So, if you play it almost daily as I have (144 days logged) credits and cars will come. Always get your daily mileage roulette ticket.

But I've also played some financial games: If I get a valuable car that I will certainly not use, I will sell it without remorse to get the credits for the cars that interest me or that are necessary to complete a cafe menu, and I also sell almost every duplicate car I get.

And I have zero interest in the 10,000,000+ cars so I don't really grind for them.

My first aim when I got the game was to buy every UCD car as soon as it came out. These are time limited, and they generally fall into the "affordable" category so that would be feasible. I bought LCD cars as and when it was possible, usually in tandem with game completion (circuit experiences, online time trials) to boost the credits.

Once I was down to the most expensive models remaining, I began saving money whilst trying out the cars I had bought so far with the Quick Race and Custom Race modes, effectively hitting two birds with one stone. I also very occasionally grinded out some credits at Tokyo to try out my ≈600pp cars.

Once my principal aim was finished (I bought my last 20m LCD car after 3 years), I then felt free to relieve the Dealerships of the models I hadn't bought yet in order to complete my road car collection. By that time, completing the Café menus was almost incidental...

My next mission was to own all of the engine swaps, which I am now up to date on. I usually have enough money in the bank to buy every update car as they arrive, along with the latest swaps.

I'm now in a very good place, in GT7 terms. I scout the internet for Custom grids, and various tunes for whichever car I please. I often buy duplicates now so that I can properly fill out grids, should I decide to, or to try different permanent tunes.
