IMHO Initial D SS is the worst racer I've played on PS2; the games physics engine is non-existant, the collision detection is absolutely terrible (although it's slightly improved from the arcade game), the competition is somewhat easy to beat and there's no two player mode.
[Physics Engine]
- You crash your car into the side railing at speeds in excess of 100km/h and your bounced back onto the track with a decrease in acceleration for a few seconds, but you don't get slowed down to majorly.
- You hit another car headon and sometimes you can pass them as if nothing has happened (although this is pretty rare compared to the arcade version)
- The game doesn't quite understand uphill and downhill too well. For instance I can accelerate very quickly up Myogi which is probably the steepest mountain in the game, you can easily reach 200km/h. Then you have an uphill track like Akina where the acceleration is slower although it's not as steep.
- Your car is redlining and you know the engine should be in pain although the sounds are pretty dull, you decide you can't be bothered to brake, so you just shift down gears straight from 5 to 3 and take the corner effortlessly and accelerate away quicker from the corner than you would if you played properly and shifted down where your car isn't redlining where you know your engine should be messed up by now...[ok im bored now]
Here's a brief summary:
Cons
1) No multiplayer
2) Arcade mode is too easy
3) You have to save your ghost car for it to have an effect
4) Competitiveness from arcade has been lost.
5) Only 1-1 racing
6) I expect traffic on the PUBLIC roads at daytime
Pros
1) Fun to play in brief bursts of about 10minutes at a time.
2) Don't need to waste money at the arcade
3) Story mode is original
4) Lots of cars and some new tracks
5) Good likelyness to the Anime
The game is an arcade game at heart, but it cannot compare to Burnout 2 which is probably the best game in this catagory and only costs £20. Other games which you may like are Auto Modellista which has a much better customization option than Initial D.
IMO the ID Animes are excellant but the game suffers because it tries to copy the Anime too much instead of including important gameplay features which are obvious in other racing games. If more effort was put into things like the games physics engine instead of making sure leaves are on the track in places where Takumi uses them to slow himself down the game could have been much better than it is; an example of this is with the Colin McRae and WRC games, personally CM has always been better for me than WRC, and while it lacks an official liscense and some things are different than real-life, it does what it's meant to do much better.
Overall IDSS is worth a rent, and if your a fanatic maybe you should import it, but for the rest of us who like our games realistic such as GT3 and CM4 or even reasonable such as NFSHP2, then IDSS is only worth renting and not the £40 retail price it will cost when it comes out.
