Initial D is a japanese manga about car racing. i assume you've already worked that bit out! 
the manga is much longer than just 1 to 8!!! it is still being made in Japan, and they are up to volume #~35 or something!
there is an anime based on the manga. it has 2 television series, the first being 24 episodes and the second, 12. there is also a 100 minute movie and an "extra stage", a 60 min tv special.
the tv series are called "initial d" and "initial d: 2nd stage". the movie is "initial d: the movie" a.k.a. "initial d: 3rd stage"
there is a forth stage coming, which i think is currently in production.
there is also a "clip-show" dvd, which shows all the main car battles, called "battle stage".
on top of that, there are video games. Sega produce "Initial D: Arcade Stage" which lets you choose a car from the series and race against characters in their series cars. your game progression can be saved on a magnetic-strip memory card.
Arcade Stage is currently at version 2, and version 3 is being beta tested in Japan currently.
"Initial D: Special Stage" is the PS2 version of the game. it has several modes, including story mode (you play following the story of the manga), time trial (you can use a passcode to upload your times to the Internet Ranking page) and arcade mode (identical to Arcade Stage v2). ID:SS features more courses than ASv2.
