I was looking at a series of YouTube videos showing how certain racers and some race officials have died. I have to tell you, it's very sad imagining just what happened that took the lives of these wonderful drivers. The one I best remember was Greg Moore's fatal crash in 1999. Juan Pablo Montoya won the Champ Car title in 1999, but the real big story was the passing of Greg Moore. Take a look at these YouTube videos. And I must warn you that these three links may be unbearable to watch. What I'm trying to showcase in this thread is just about how far we've come inracing safety as well as what were some of the best innovations in improving safety in racing. Here are the three links to YouTube videos (the first two about 8 minutes long while the third is about 6:10 long), and again, they may be unbearable to watch:

Just looking at these videos just goes to show how far we've come along in safety as well as how dangerous motorsports can be. I have great appreciation for all of the ones who suit up and go racing. I've seen vicious crashes before in which the driver lives to race another day like Kenny Brack's vicious crash at Texas in 2003. It is such crashes which show progress that vicious crashes can happen, but you can still walk away somehow from these violent crashes. It is also why I don't enjoy watching crashes even though media makes a habit of showing off crashes and rough play.

So with this all said, why don't we have a discussion of some of the innovations in safety that have helped to make the sometimes-violent sport of racing a lot safer. Anyone care to chat about any innovations to make racing safer? This can range from lowering speeds, strengthening chassis, making simple enhancements to cars to make them safer to race, race suits themselves, track modifications, and that sort of thing. Anyone care to chat about what innovations help make racing safer?
