Hey there kids, more Panamera photos have surfaced over the past few days.

LLN.com
Porsche's Wendelin Wiedeking announced in an interview just days ago that the automaker's new Panamera four-door "coupe" began its testing marathon at the challenging Nürburgring over the last week. Now, spy photographer Brenda Priddy has snapped some photos of one of the first prototypes, still wearing heavy disguise. The entry-level powerplant will be Volkswagen’s 3.5-liter six-cylinder engine with 300 bhp, while Porsche’s own drivetrain will be a direct-injection eight-cylinder petrol engine, available in naturally-aspirated guise (350 bhp) and with twin-turbo (560 bhp). When it hits the road in 2009, Porsche hopes to be able to sell 20 000 units annually. In late 2005, a Porsche spokesperson said the automaker would unveil a concept version of the car in spring 2007. So far, Porsche has only released an official sketch of the car.

Well, the body tape doesn't allow for too much free thought when it comes to the overall design of the car, but one can see small parts of the origional sketch in this prototype. Will it truely be the four-door 911 in the way that the Rapide will be the four-door DB9? Well obviously not, the Panamera is an FR model, but in looks, it does appear to be working out well.

I'm excited for the cars debut, as the shape appears to be somewhat striking under the disguise.

[sarcasm]Maybe if this model is successful, Chevrolet will wise-up and build a four-door Corvette?[/sarcasm]

Actually, I like the proportions of this one. Also loving the "Birdcage" rear wing, which probably won't make it to production, but looks cool anyway.

the disguise is particularily heavy at the rear...no way to figure out its shape yet. :)

but i have never heard of a german word "verfangen" :D

do you mean abgefangen or eingefangen? ;)

@ Yssman :

Certainly not what Yssman wanted to say...But you wanted to say sth like "trapped", "in the net" sth like this I suppose...
I'd use "Ins Netz gegangen" instead, comes close to what you wanted to say I think....

@ Vladimir
"Verfangen" exists though. "Sich in einem Netz verfangen" z.B. und das wird er auch gemeint haben....

This thing is going to be awesome when it comes out! It better have a manual as standard.

Heh, Looks like an Aston martin Rapide had sex with a Porsche Cayman.

Vote for least subtle test car? I think the color kind of does it.

I suppose the vertical creases on the leading edges of the door are there until they get the doors to fit right? And this car is going to be front-engined, right? Any chance of all-wheel-drive? Any chance of this platform being shared with any VAG division, as was the case with the other "non-Porsche", the Cayenne?

Lotsa questions, I know.

My lord, those rear doors look so out of place. I know it's just a prototype, but that's far from the graceful shape that the CLS possesses.

However, it's not all bad news. Since they're planning on making a 2-door version (...right?), the styling will make more sense on that version (since I can already see some 928 cues). I took the liberty of photoshopping the side-profile shot to see what I could get out of it:

Much better, if I may say so myself. ;)

The short, stubby rear window and pillars kill the car, imo. It doesn't carry the porsche contour. It's like comparing a dolphin's lines to an elephant's foot.

I attempted to do something about the rear window in my 'chop, but I couldn't figure out a way to fix it and make it look better. :indiff:

Well, I'm talking about the real pictures (even though your chop still kind of applies).

Wait, wait...done:

Which basically means that to look any good the neo-928 that is all but confirmed will have to look nothing like the Panamera from the side.
Seriously, the rear doors look like they came off of this:

Thanks for reminding me of what the 928's rear side window looked like, Toronado (I don't know why I didn't bother refreshing my memory myself :ouch: ). It inspired me to make a couple more modifications:

(yes, I realize the C-pillar is dangerously thin. Creative license. :p )

That looks better... but if you take a peek at the original, the true side window line *may* be the faint line curving upwards?

Make it a sequential shift manual.

...It should happen. Now that Porsche is a 20% owner of Volkswagen, the pioneers of the DSG transmission (argueably the best sequential transmission thus far), I would predict that either a six or seven speed DSG will find it's way both into the Panamera and the 928, along with the 911 as well.

Although Porsche originally designed the system and used it on the 956/962 in the '80s :sly:

^ That is indeed true. I belive Audi had a similar system on their Quattro Rally Cars as well, correct?

lo-fi, but it gets my point across. I think it looks better.

I really like the looks of this, but if people want a fast 4-door, the S Class is as near to perfect as you can get.

The Porsche may have a major flaw when compared to others, and this could harm sales and image.

Looks like a Lexus GS300 to me, especially around the rear pillar area.

I've had a quick PS to tidy things up - can't figure out where they are heading with those headlights though.

Even with the Chop jobs, this car doesn't excite me like a Porsche should. Other car companies have much more appealing 4-doored sports cars, namely Mercedes, BMW, and Audi.

Yup, i agree. Porsche should leave the 4x4's and four-doors to someone else and stick to what they do best - sports cars. They might be getting great profits margins at the moment but diluting the brand can only spell trouble in the long run.

Exactly.

I got to drive a friend's Cayenne. My impression... it was nice and all, but... it's not a Porsche.

...Awww, it isn't that bad. Remember when we all hated the idea of a Cayenne, and then it turned out to be pretty cool? I'd be willing to bet that the same will happen with this, maybe having this become the "standard" of the German über-sedan market...

I can see the test between it and the M5 right now. Panamera FTW!
