A few interesting factoids I found out today.
  • Dragsters reach over 300 miles per hour before you have completed reading this sentence.
  • One Top Fuel dragster 500 cubic inch Hemi engine makes more horsepower than the first 4 rows at the Daytona 500.
  • Under full throttle, a dragster engine consumes 1-1/2 gallons of nitromethane per second; a fully loaded 747 consumes jet fuel at the same rate with 25% less energy being produced.
  • A stock Dodge Hemi V8 engine cannot produce enough power to drive the dragster supercharger.
  • With 3000 CFM of air being rammed in by the supercharger on overdrive, the fuel mixture is compressed into a near-solid form before ignition. Cylinders run on the verge of hydraulic lock at full throttle.
  • At the stoichiometric (stoichiometry: methodology and technology by which quantities of reactants and products in chemical reactions are determined) 1.7:1 air/fuel mixture for nitromethane the flame front temperature measures 7050 degrees F.
  • Nitromethane burns yellow. The spectacular white flame seen above the stacks at night is raw burning hydrogen, dissociated from atmospheric water vapor by the searing exhaust gases.
  • Dual magnetos supply 44 amps to each spark plug. This is the output of an arc welder in each cylinder.
  • Spark plug electrodes are totally consumed during a pass. After ½ way, the engine is dieseling from compression plus the glow of exhaust valves at 1400 degrees F. The engine can only be shut down by cutting the fuel flow.
  • If spark momentarily fails early in the run, unburned nitro builds up in the affected cylinders and then explodes with sufficient force to blow cylinder heads off the block in pieces or split the block in half.
  • In order to exceed 300 mph in 4.5 seconds dragsters must accelerate an average of over 4G's. In order to reach 200 mph well before half-track, the launch acceleration approaches 8G's.
  • Top Fuel Engines turn approximately 540 revolutions from light to light!
  • Including the burnout the engine must only survive 900 revolutions under load.
  • The current Top Fuel dragster elapsed time record is 4.441 seconds for the quarter mile (10/05/03, Tony Schumacher). The top speed record is 333.00 mph. (533 km/h) as measured over the last 66' of the run (09/28/03 Doug Kalitta).
  • The Bottom Line; Assuming all the equipment is paid off, the crew worked for free, and for once NOTHING BLOWS UP, each run costs an estimated $1,000.00 per second.

Putting all of this into perspective: You are driving the average $240,000 NASCAR Winston Cup racecar. Over a mile up the road, a Top Fuel dragster is staged and ready to launch down a quarter mile strip as you pass. You have the advantage of a flying start. You run the stock car hard up through the gears and blast across the starting line and past the dragster at an honest 200 mph. The 'tree' goes green for both of you at that moment.

The dragster launches and starts after you. You keep your foot down hard, but you hear an incredibly brutal whine that sears your eardrums and within 3 seconds the dragster catches and passes you. He beats you to the finish line, a quarter mile away from where you just passed him. Think about it, from a standing start, the dragster had spotted you 200 mph and not only caught, but nearly blasted you off the road when he passed you within a mere 1320 foot long race course. Try not to take it personal.

That folks, is acceleration.

I knew most of that stuff but that's because I can't seem to stay away from the strip.:) It also helps that my relatives drag race and I can talk to them about it alot. I love being in the stands when the Top Fuel and Funny Cars go by, you can feel the reverb from the exhaust hitting you in the face.:D

Very interesting factoids, the power of these machines never ceases to amaze me. But I never knew their spark plugs were only good for one run! Also interesting fact about the Winston Cup car vs. the Dragster, but what happens when they get to a corner? :D

Bah! my civic will cream that. j/k. I don't even own a civic. :D

 we went to the Top Feul drags and once they got started they closed the playstation truck because every time one passed by all the games would reset so there was no point in playing. they are truly awsome machines. Where did you get that info? It's very interesting.

as an added fact, I once heard a driver (dont remember who, tough) say that when he was in the car, he could count to 12 seconds, yeah, twelve. but the car cruised the quarter in 4.5
HOW COME??? I mean, I cant understand how, but can it somehow really affect the flow of time within one's concience???? or just... WTF????

Apparently racing a Top Fuel/Funny Car is very good for your back, according to some doctors. The G-Forces sustained in the acceleration strengthen your spine, or something to that effect.

They never use 100% throttle, not even when going. With 6000+hp, they're fighting for traction all the way.

I remember hearing on a video about Don Garlits on it. He made a run , this is befor they had the harnes that kept your head forward, that he got hit in the helmet by a bug at 200mph, and he said it snaped his head back so far, that he decided to make that inside cok pit thing you see here:

sorry for the big picture.

Very cool facts Der Alta. Where'd you find the information? I'd be interesting to read up on it more.

He probably found it on another message board. It's been making its rounds on the internet for years now.

I still read it, and it still gives me chills, each time I see it, though.👍 Good stuff.

I edited the pic down a bit. Didn't want to kill the 56kers.

I found it floating around the web and thought I'd post it up for others to read.

haha...you know waht this just reminded me of? Have any of you seen the commercial for the new kirby game? Where kirby, a fighter jet, a drag racer, and a motorcycle are on the desert about to race. The light turns green and the bike the jet and the drag car take off but kirby's just sitting there. Then he sucks them all in:lol: I dont know how it reminded me of that...probably because of the whole fighter jet thing and the G's you were talking about. Imagine how many G's there would be if you were to get pulled back half way into your run VERY, VERY abruptly. 60 G's is when the human brain will jsut scramble inside of the skull and the only sign of injury youll find on the victim is blood from the ears due to the ear drum exploding. Freakish man.

Actually, speed does distort the flow of time. The faster you go, the slower time seems to go, until you reach the speed of light, when time appears to stop.

Okay, so the time dilation effect isn't really noticeable below about 0.3c (0.3x the speed of light).

If I was in a dragster, I'd only count to one. And it'd be more sort of "Oneeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!!!! expletive"

Forgot one....

Did you know that a draster engine, becuase of the wear and tear, after 60 seconds of total runtime is considered an "old timer"

Dont objects also shrink due to high speeds (high speeds as in nearly the speed of light)?

oh, there is it then. omfg then too. 12-4 seconds? that's three times the real time!! incredible.

also, PLEEEASE post the BIG picture again!!! and I am in 56k, but still want it :D could any of you at least PM it to me??? thanks!!!

Actually, they expand!

actually im pretty sure when you approach the speed of light objects shrink

So, how much horsepower does the first 4 rows of Daytona have.

I think I heard that a Nascar has between 650 and 750hp. So I guess thats 6,000hp? Am I right or wrong, I also figured that out very quickly.
