Interesting GTAIII Glitch

Okay. So I'm playing GTAIII all over again for about the fifth time. Everything goes great, I've killed Catalina and 'ended' the story for all intensive purposes.

But I didn't do the phone missions in Wichita Gardens for D-Ice and The Red Jacks.

I figured "ah well, might as well get 'em outta the way and over with".

And then I start "Uzi Money".

As I'm sure most of you afficionados know, the mission is to kill 20 Purple Nines in two-and-a-half minutes. One problem though:

There are no Purple Nines to kill. For whatever reason the game absolutely will not spawn Purple Nines for me.

So I came here, started a thread, and *****ed about it to you people. Yee-haw, eh?

Probably the most well-known glitch. Once you get rid of the Purple Nines the first time through and start a new game, the game thinks you've already done the missions and hence, doesn't show any Purple Nines.

I see.

Well known to everyone but me, apparently.

Thanks for the heads up.

(strange though that it waited until the fifth time I had started a new game to do this to me....)

I've heard of this...is aptly named "the purple nines glitch"

I think I have an answer as to why, although I cannot prove it. You probably started the game from a saved game with this done...what I mean is you had a 100% game loaded....paused and clicked the "start new game"...so you started a new game with purple nines mission completed..

Most glitches like this happen because when you restart a game without turning off the PS2, the memory is not completely purged-- think of it as RAM...unless you power down, some things remain stored-- this is evident if you are playing and reload your progress--some things that you did before your reload will show up...the most obvious thing I've ever seen were skid marks on the road--if you make them right before you reload-- if you reload it should not be there but they are.

You might be able to fix your game by doing the following (I don't know if this will work but it apparently works if you have the missing jump glitch on VC which is a similar "type" of glitch)...just try it...it only takes a few minutes.

Turn off your PS2, remove your memory card. With the GTA3 disk inserted, power up. Let the game start like you are starting a new game--go ahead and click through the cut scenes or watch them if you want. When you get to a place you can pause..pause your game. Insert your memory card and then try reloading you saved game. Now try to do that mission. If this works please let us know.

In the future, if you start a new game...start it from a powered down with memory card removed to avoid this glitch in the first place.

Nope! No worky.

Oh well. I'll just start over again. :dopey:

There's nothing you can do to fix this. It's been brought up before on neoseeker and alot of other forums. You can take the memory card out, clean the disc, etc, but if it works after that it's just chance. There's not much you can do, but if you really want to do the mission that much, start a new game if you don't have much difficulty getting to where you're currently at. Otherwise you just can't finish it.

This happened to me on my first attempt at it :grumpy:.

Best thing to do is to run the first mission, save, and use the flying car cheat to get over to Shoreside Vale and check if the purple nines are around. If they are, good, your game's fine, and you should keep that game as your starting game.

If not - start again...

And if they are there, go and save your game in the last slot. If you ever want to restart, you can just load this game and be assured the Purple Nines are there.

That sounds like a pretty reliable way of ensuring you don't have the glitch 👍 :) 👍

Like I said in my previous post... I didn't know if it would work or not...I was assuming it was similar to the missing jump glitch (if it exists)... It was just a suggestion.

I haven't suffered any glitches that prevent me from getting 100% in GTA3 or VC-- the only glitch that I have that has been kind of irritating is the test track/trial by dirt identical times glitch...I know a few people have this one....in all my VC games, the times are identical--I've heard of a few others having this glitch.

I wouldn't put too much faith in what you read on Newbieseeker Jimmy... :dopey:

Lol, I know...that's why I'm here!!!

But, I also said alot of other places. What Shannon said is good, but it's not "fixing" the glitch, simply just starting a new game, and keeping your glitched game in the process. Which is good, but if you have alot of difficulty getting to where you are Firebird, and don't want to restart another game, then you won't finish this mission. There is no way to fix this glitch, and I bet you when Rockstar made this game and found out about this glitch, they would've been :banghead:. Probably still are, lol.

Meh. It's okay. The 'story' missions are easy. It's the little stuff like Ambulance missions and Rampages that are a pain in the ass.

Luckily I didn't start either. :D
