I’m running XP home on a laptop with a wireless card (internal, not pcmcia). The laptop also has an Ethernet port.

A while back I found out that the computer contracted a virus. It was a nasty one that really screwed with the internet connection – brought down lots of popups and junk like that. I’m not sure if it’s related to the problem but I thought I’d give you the background anyway.

So about 6months ago the wireless started acting up. The computer would see the wireless connection 1 out of every 2 or 3 times it started up. Other times it would give up and not connect.

I thought it was a problem with the wireless card, so I just started using the Ethernet port.

Now the same thing is happening with the hard connection. The computer only recognizes the internet 1 out of every 2 or 3 times it starts. This is getting irritating. I’ve also noticed that the computer is significantly slower now than it used to be.

I plan to format and start over in a few months, but I’m wondering if there is a known problem that perhaps there is a fix for.

Try the avert stinger from McAfee.

This tool should help you. Furthermore load a squared, spybot search and destroy and adaware from lavasoft. These tools may help you. Try this before you format your harddrive.

Or just use system recovery only if you're sure not to have a virus in the backup..

Good luck!

Sounds like an adware or spyware attack. Download one of the above mentioned antispyware programs or M$'s antispyware program and give it a run.

Although .. the network problem sounds like you may just need to uninstall and then reinstall the networking drivers.

I don't trust McAfee - their programs are harder to uninstall completely than AOL is from my experience. And we all know how much of a pain in the ass AOL is.

The Avert Stinger is one executable I think. So you don't have to install software. Norton is much more harder to delete.

Better he loads all this software. So he can get nearly maximum protection.
