Which Do You Prefer?

  1. Internet - I Can Definitely Express Myself Better In A Forum
  2. Real Life - Emoticons And Bold Text Just Don't Do It For Me
  3. Impartial - I Feel I Can Express Myself Equally In Both Environments

Your objective here is to decide where you think you are more open and outspoken: Real Life, The Internet, Or Both Equally. Are you just not the kind of person who can talk out in front of a crowd or another person? Internet is probably your best choice. Do you think that you are much better speaking than typing? Real Life is probably your selection. Do you feel that, in either situation, you can express yourself equally? Choose Impartial.

I, personally, feel I am Impartial. I can express myself pretty well in real life as well as on the internet. The only advantage I see of having a discussion over the internet is that you can't be directly interrupted (especially in a forum). Plus, people can go over your previous statements without completely forgetting about them. On the other hand, you can use body language, facial expressions, and tones of voice to show how you really feel.

So, where are you more comfortable discussing things or speaking out?

Good thread idea.

In terms of debating, I tend to be better on the internet because I have the time to look up and construct my words in the best way possible. This allows me to formulate a strong argument, and to have time to rethink "hmm... maybe I shouldn't say that."

In terms of regular conversation, it's the same. I feel that with smilies and ways to emphasize text, you can reduce others' confusion of your words to the point as if they were hearing and seeing you in real life. Even in real life, a person's body language can be confusing and juxtaposed to what they are really saying.

In terms of women... well I used to be shy around them in real life. But after learning how they react online, I was able to apply that ro real life; and now both worlds have equaled out.

This is why I voted impartial.

The important thing for me is to be true to myself in both worlds. I have my own standards for what I will say and do in real life, and that applies online. I try my hardest to be Kenny Schabow in both mediums.

I find that some people just cannot carry a conversation online, or they suddenly open up to you about all the details of their life (which they won't do face to face). Well I decided years ago to be the same person, and that works for me.

I really do have a 6 foot long penis and a Ferrari!

On my HD-ready monitor, the internet has better resolution than real life.

What!? There are no women on the internet. You lie! You’re a lier. You’re not telling the truth.

There's plenty more that I am very close with online than in real life.. going to an engineering college and working in the auto industry sucks in regards to finding women!

Although, the events of two nights ago... may have changed that ;)

Are you gonna be the one to break it to Jack that I'm really his father???

I vote impartial, I can embarrass my son just as much in the real world as online. He really shouldn't let me talk to his mates. :)

My mother was like that, by the time I left home I could hardly get embarrased by anything.

I don't care either way, but what TS said is true, the good comebacks only happen on the 'net. If you wanted a good comeback in reality you'd have to start scraping the back of someones throat.
Or wait half an hour while they think it up.

Everyone is wittier on the 'net than they are in real life. Except for Mars, his puns are just as bad IRL as they are here. And Famine of course.

I'm not sure about that. I think a lot of what can make a good comeback or a witty remark can be made up from the tone and the way you say something. I don't have any trouble thinking up witty remarks offline, not that I'm a cauldron of wit. Being able to think about one for half an hour ofcourse is an advantage of making witty replies online, but most of the time the replies are no better than any I can think of within 2-3 seconds and you don't have the benefit of altering the way you say it to increse it's effect.

Well I voted internet, as were I live doesn't have many other kids, and about the only time I see any other kids are when I'm in Wal*Fart or AWANA's (Approved Workmen Are Not Ashamed)
So Congrats guys, you are sometimes the only friends I have! :p

i prefer real life, because sometimes you need to make gestures and so on, and that can't be expressed in the internet........

Real life.

I rely a lot on facial expressions when I'm talking. I say things bluntly and rely on attitude and tone to take the edge off. On the internet, it just comes off as harsh.

That being said, I'm way more well spoken on the internet. I have time to formulate an opinion and make my case carefully. In real life I often have trouble figuring out the right thing to say fast enough to get it out.

Overall, I'd give the edge to real life. But they both have their advantages.

There are fewer incorrect usages of apostrophes in real life. Although I shudder every time I here someone pronounce "definately".

I like the intimacy of real life, and I like the global reach of the internet.

How can you mispronounce definitely? I'm stumped, so maybe that means I've been mispronouncing it for the last 20 years.

Are you saying they pronounce it with an a, as in DEF-IN-ATE-LEE? I've never heard that before.

However, I don't understand how people mispronounce ambulance and ask so easily. Let me acks you a question about that am-boo-lance.

Da Po-lice comin'.

I'm finna graduate hye schoo'. I'm finna graduate hye skoo'. *insert random exclaimation from the latest hit rap song, i.e., "ballin!"

Real life. People get the point better when they see a 6 foot tall 13 year old using words longer than their attention spans. Very, very fun. :)

in person over even the phone is preferred to internet for me. The depth of emotion you can get by voice and non-verbal communication is far superior to typing.

👍👍

Exactly. With real life, I can put it out exactly as I want, and still get the point. On the internet, it takes a bit of chosing the right ordering of words to get my message.

In person, I can speak my mind freely as well. Not to go against any forum, but I'm not restricted as much, and can say what I want 95% of the time. In person also gives me a good view of who I'm talking to.

I wholeheartedly agree. Especially with women. It's the same reason I usually text girls rather than call (well, that and my little brother, who can't resist shouting sexually suggestive things across the room while I'm on the phone with a chick :indiff: ). I have a tough time articulating what I'm thinking on the fly... typing it out allows me to say what I really want.

I find it's best to keep check on reality and virtual reality.

I prefer to give messages online because I can look over what I've said and make amendments. I'm an obsessive compulsive perfectionist.

But if you look touch with your real life it will crumble. The internet is no replacement for friends, family and a social life.
