So... who's thinking about getting one?

I remember telling myself when the iPad 2 was still nothing more than a rumor that, if it had a retina display, I'd take the plunge. Eventually it became clear that it wouldn't, so I didn't get one.

And well...the iPad 3 rumor mill has been going for a while, and it seems pretty likely that the iPad 3 will have the display that I covet. At 2048x1536, not only is that quadruple the pixels of previous iPads and pretty much blows any other competing tablet's resolution out of the water, it's also over a million pixels in excess of full 1080p. Insane. And if true, I will undoubtedly be getting one this time around.

It also seems as if there will be a 4G LTE model, although I'll probably just be going with the wifi model.

The only thing I hope is that they have a higher capacity than 64 GB. 128 would be freaking awesome.

Yeah I'll most likely be getting one. All of my partners at the office have them and they say and I've seen it myself that it is a great tool to use around work. I guess my Air will be taking a break for a wile when this comes out.

A would like a iPad because a hate sitting with the laptop on my knees or on top of the covers in bed but... It's their any point having a iPhone 4 ?

You could get a very good android tablet. and still have some money left over.

I got a android styled tablet for $150.

Phone (any one, not just iPhone) is too small for home-use IMO.

I'm probably getting one. The wife has been bugging me to get one for a long time and I finally convinced her to wait till next months announcement to decide.

Well ordered mine direct, went for White wifi/4g 16gb.

Excited about the new display the most, although with all this extra power some superb apps and games are bound to arrive.

In the UK I have read that Carphone Warehouse will be doing trade-ins for ipad 1 and ipad 2

Android "styled" means what?

Nothing on the market will come close to competing with the new iPad's display. And a $150 Android tablet won't offer a very smooth user experience in comparison either.

Yes. I have been using an iPhone to browse the internet - and it is a blast when it comes to internet-on-the-go. However, it is not the best for detailed online interactions - long posts are daunting, and serious discussions can soon have you left behind. There are huge advantages to having a pocketable piece of net-worthy equipment - but there are of course also advantages that a more cumbersome tablet will have. Tablets seem to be the current best moble communications set - all things considered. As for the best tablet - well, in the end it is also a matter of availability (I would like a CRAY, myself), budget, etcetera.. . . .
iPad 3 is, of course, one of the better toys in the market. But, that is just MHO.

What is the Retina Display exactly?

Someone told me it has the ability to project stuff like a keyboard that you can type on over the floor or walls or something like that. Is this true or just a rumor?

Retina display is just Apple's name for a very high resolution screen. And the second thing is just a rumour, not true.

When iOS 5.1 has an untethered jailbreak and the iPad 3 is jailbroken I will think about it, I am fine with my jailbroken iPod Touch

It is essentially a 'Super HD' screen. Apple claim it has more pixels than a 1080p television, and I personally can't wait to see it up close.

Looking forward to the new developments of the iPad 3, but i'll wait two years or so before I invest in buying my self one. (School handed out iPad 2's for seniors)

You know that the stock software is actually pretty good, and that jailbreaking doesn't make you look like a badass?

Apple doesn't just "claim" it has more pixels than 1080p, it is just a plain true fact.

The new iPad's resolution is 2048x1536 pixels. 1080p is 1920x1080 pixels. You don't even need to pull out the calculator to realize that since the iPad has more pixels in both the horizontal and vertical, it's definitely got more pixels overall.

But if you do pull out a calculator, you can see that it's got 3,145,728 pixels... or exactly 1,072,128 more pixels than 1080p's measly 2,073,600 pixels. Quite insane, really. :D

Azuremen
The default setup of iOS is quite restricting, from both a user and developer standpoint.

How so? While there are restrictions on what you can do, for the most part people are perfectly content with stock.

Nope, had an iPod touch for a year and moved on. I only used it for apps, and it was great. I knew about jailbreaking but I never really felt the need to.

How so? Have you ever seen what Apple requires a dev to do in order to okay an application for iOS? You can't just build a file and install like you with Android APKs.

Plus, Apple has quite a few restrictions on what level programs can access the OS, and what an application can modify with the hardware. Something as simple as changing the color temp of the screen is rather impossible on a stock iOS install.

As for most people, they are very content running whatever the talking box tells them to do. Just look at how people leave the computers setup from OEMs, with terrible default software setups, hardware, and so on. Most consumers are too stupid/apathetic to care.

I think that is for the mods to decide.

Way to contribute

I agree with all that Azuremen just said, it is a major pain to submit apps to the app store and that's even if they get taken, apple likes to have full control over what your device does. I think its a little nosey, and Tesla you really cant say anything against jailbreaking because you have never tried it in the first place. If you would of tried it then said that people are content with stock (boring) iOS I would be cutting you some slack. Azuremen is correct 1,000,000 times over. I guess I am a misfit who went against apple.

Oh noes!!! You can't change the color temp of the screen! How awful!! :p

It is annoying that Apple gets to decide what is and isn't available for the app store, but that admittedly mostly just keeps me from installing apps that are more in grey area of legality such as emulators. Big deal. If my experience with emulators on the Zune HD is any indication, playing games designed for controllers on a touchscreen device is an awful experience anyways. And the app submission process, while a pain in the rear for developers, is completely meaningless to the end users. And considering how rich in content the App Store is, it obviously isn't bad enough to deter most developers either.

While I poked fun at the lack of options to change color temp of the screen, more in-depth options would always be welcome. I'd definitely rather have more options than I need than not enough. But that being said, nothing absolutely critical is missing in iOS. The only two things that even come remotely close would be a task manager and a file manager. But even those aren't crucial... iOS's app-managed file system works perfectly well for most typical iOS uses. And while a task manager would be nice to have, task managers are mainly used to kill tasks that are misbehaving. And iOS already has a way of killing tasks more completely than just pressing the home button, so... yeah.

Given that Samsung make a lot of Android devices I wouldn't be so sure about that. They're probably already working on their version.
