Howdy, wondering if any of the nice people from America can help?

I'm after an iPod Touch 4th gen', 64gb, white, refurbished from Apple US, priced at $229. Over here in the UK, they are sold out, and were also nearly a 1/3 more expensive ($315)...!
They are limited stock but worth the price, considering this 2 year old model still goes for £329 ($532) brand new here.
People on Ebay are offering international shipping for £10-20 ($16-32). Sadly, nobody on Ebay has the model/colour I want, most are used as well.

So, can anyone help with the acquisition of one? Does anyone know anyone who works in shipping? Does anyone know a non-fee way of getting money across the pond?

Drop me a pm if you would like to help...

Thanks!

No.

Even if you buy it you may have to pay customs tax.

He does not say he posts to the UK but if you ask the seller nicely he may be able to get a price for you.

Thanks for bringing that to my attention, Grayfox! I didn't see many Australian auctions in my original search. Sadly, that's still more than twice the price of the refurbished one from America and is similar to the new price here in shops...

The search goes on!

I highly doubt that you'd have to pay customs tax, and even then it'd be included in the shipping price.

Would this be directly from the Apple US store? If so, you're out of luck and will have to look on eBay (whether that be .com or .co.uk) to find one for cheap.

Note that US prices do not include sales tax, which also needs to be added to the price. As mentioned before, customs will have to paid as well, though you could possibly (try to) evade those. Why not order from another EU country instead? E.g. the Dutch Apple Store has the refurbished (both available in white and black) 64GB iPod 4th gen for 249,- euros, and that includes all taxes. Same for the Belgian Apple Store.

No, in general it's not added to the price/initial invoice and you get billed for it afterwards (since your local customs decide wether customs tax apply and how much). And for electronics, you have to pay customs (as applies to most of the items you import from outside the EU). Of course, if you go there in person, buy something, unwrap it and stick it in your luggage, nobody will ask questions. ;)

Hm. Must work differently to what Australia does, where anything from overseas with a value of under $1000 isn't applicable for GST.

That was the first port of call, however, you won't find one new for cheap.
As of yesterday, there were only 10 listings worldwide for all 64gb 4th gen' iPod touch. That's where I got some basic shipping info from one or two sellers in America. Next to nothing really if it could be done economy wise.

Apparently they don't have them on the Dutch, nor does France, Ireland, both Belgium sites and Germany, thought I'd look around since you mentioned those countries. Also, they are on a par with the UK price which as already mentioned is also out of stock. And that price is 25% more expensive than the American store price.

Thanks for your input guys, everything that is talked about is helpful, I guess I'm still hopeful of a nice community member from across the pond to save the day...

Anything over the value of £15 imported from outside the EU is liable to having VAT added onto it at a rate of 20%. You will also get a handling fee added from Royal Mail on top of that.

If the item is marked as a gift you can get away without paying it but if it's not a gift (ie, you paid for it) then that is fraudulent and the seller can get into trouble for marking something as a gift it is isn't one.

Well, it is Christmas. All OP would have to do is exchange a few friendly emails and bam! There is a record of their friendship which would justify a gift.

Not if OP sends him money for the item, which I assume he would. Not a gift then.
