I started with racing car games when I bought this GT5 at xmas. First i used the standard controller then i moved onto a HKS pad and after a couple of hours was banging pb laps out, I also found that when the rear steps out I can normally catch it corect and carry on. Now ive purchased a DFGT wheel and first impressions are that when you get corner entry correct you are fasterbut if it slides there is no way i can correct it and 9 times out of 10 if you hit the wall i have to do a 5 point turn to get going losing loads of time in comparison to the pad just a couple of seconds.

On some curcuits i have already set new PB's but on my favourate curcuit the nordshliefe i am [even on a good lap] a long way off my Pb's.

Is there anything i can do to get better, my settings are FFB 4 set on simulation, or do i need more practice time ? had 6 days now with at least 4 hrs per day.

Any advice will be a help thanks.

The only advice I can give is practice. You will evntually get used to it and should become faster than with DS3 or HKS controller. It takes getting used to, especially saving the car when losing it. I would recommend practicing in time trials, so it's just you, the car, and the wheel, nothing to distract you. Good luck.

I use FFB 7 and all aids off except ABS1.

For me, this is an ongoing process. I've been using a wheel since latter days of GT4 and I'm still not as fast as I once was with a controller. Keep at it, I know I will!

While I remember the transition several years ago, I don't understand how some people can't fully get used to it and still claim they have an advantage with the pad. I could never be as consistent and accurate without a wheel now.

Practice is your only choice!

You'll get used to it in time. I have mine set on Simulation, FFB is at 5. If the rear of a car steps out, depending on the severity of the slide I can either give it some slow counter steer for correction. Sometimes it takes a pretty nasty jerk of the wheel to keep the car straight. (like dropping a tire in the grass) I think I've figured out the DFGT enough that there's nothing else to learn with it for me. I'd like to step up to a G27 but don't have the cash.

Anyone feel like donating? :D

I know what you are talking about, you just need to get used to. This issue is due to the FFB slight delay while counter steering. To overcome it you just need to be quicker while catching it. You'll learn to anticipate that. Seems hard the first times but after 1 month you will counter steer nicely, catching the car before it spin out. After a while you'll understand how to even power oversteer on corner exit. Take a look at this video, it's not a DFGT but the technique is the same, please note, this is an extreme situation with a tail happy car like Ruf Btr at the Ring.

BTW, how do you like that HKS controller? It looks a little gimmicky but I'm a sucker for good novelty controllers. I loved my NegCon back in the day.

The HKS controller isnt gimmicky its actually very good far better than the standard sony pad you do get a very feel what the car can do. And the sreering wheel although does look odd works extremey well.

Im no superfast pro but i often get under 6 mins around the ring in very high powered cars.

Thanks every one for the input ive been at it most of today and am now within reach of my PB's, Ive got to say the wheel does give a better experience and the faster times im now getting are more due to not stepping on the grass with a rear tyre. Having watched HKS' racer video i can see where im going wrong, i need to predict the slide a he states and opposte lock much quicker. I will get there.

Thanks for the input guys, And some very good driving there HKS racer, ps i have all the Ruf cars and not used them yet so will be giving them some time when i happy with my driving.

No it wasn't me :p Just a video trying to better explain what I was saying, I think the DFGT has a less smooth FFB than the G25/G27 but don't be scary to force it frome side to side if needed, the technique is the same. Also the car setup is very important to get confident with slides. That Btr setup shared a nice sweet spot for power oversteering in corner exit... and corner entry as well. If anybody know of similar tunes, please let me know. Couze I'm bored with grippy cars. :sly:

I just got a wheel too and have the same problems. Worst part is I can't keep practicing as the table I have wobbles too much.

You can just attach it to a small board and sit it in your lap. Far from ideal but it beats having to do something other than racing.

Keep practicing :)

It will get better

Also remember to back off the throttle if it starts to slide too violently
When i started with a DFP i found i was trying to catch a slide with the throttle planted

I'm much faster with the G27 than i was with the DFP though :)

I'm thinking of getting the DFGT what's the best setting? Simulation or whatever others there are

Depending on your driving style/car behaviour:
I use Simulation, FFB set to 7, and in race menu: Controller Input Sensitivity (or whatever is called) set to 3, for normal/grippy cars.
Instead I found FFB to 3 and Sensitivity to 7 or 5 to work better with loose tail-happy cars.
