I recently saw an advertisement for a book which said that it was possible to learn languages while you sleep. I know it's not that simple but is there proven research which shows that we can learn a great deal of information while we are sleeping?

Good question, would be interested to see if there has been much research done on this subject. My gut feeling is that you can't learn anything too specific. I can see that you may subconsciously be able to condition yourself to overcome certain psychosomatic things like phobias, but not be able to do anything more specific like learn how to be a better lover, or speak Cantonese...

I have learned a few things while sleeping, however - like don't go to bed with a walkman on unless you want to destroy your headphones and/or strangle yourself

Movie Quiz : "NEVER sneak up on a guy while he's blasting Metallica!" :-)

Sorry - Totally OT - Couldn't help it...

Technically speaking, the learning part of that experience was on waking up. :)

I've heard people say play language tapes softly while you sleep, but I just don't think so.

Am I the only one watching Brainiac? They actually tested one of the "Brainiacs" there after having her listen to a tape about football history all night, and she failed it completely...

 I have been watching that show but never saw that one yet... :grumpy:

Omlette du fromage. /thread.

I fear this proves french grammar isn't something you learn while sleeping. Unless, of course, sleeping in class counts.

Omelette.

Omelette.

That was an allusion to the episode of Dexter's Laboratory where he created a sub-conscious teaching-machine for his French class. The record started skipping on "Omelette Du Fromage" after he went to sleep, making the phrase his only vocabulary for the following day.

I don't want to learn when i'm asleep...... and want to SLEEP!

I once tried these "Learn Esperante and Quantum Theory whilst you sleep" things.

The only draw back is I didn't get any sleep.
