I was thinking about this the other afternoon while I was at work. With the kids getting out of school, and many of us not having anything better to do, shall we kick around the ol' "Best Car" can and attempt to find the best in a given category once again?

Granted, it may be difficult to capture the fun when we did the "Best Car: Nation Edition" last summer. For those who don't remember these were the results:

1: Porsche 911 (Germany)
2: Chevrolet Corvette (USA)
3: BMC Mini (UK)
4: Bugatti Veyron (France)
5: Lamborghini Muria (Italy)
6-Tie: Mazda MX-5 Miata (Japan)
6-Tie: Koenigsegg CC (Sweden)
8: Holden Monaro (Australia)
9: Hyundai Tiburon/Coupe (South Korea)

...So, can we do it again? I don't think a national car contest will work out this year, given that we had just done it, and we would probably have to disqualify the winners from last time, which would pretty much defeat the whole purpose of the contest.

So, can we then do it by car class? What does make this difficult is the cross-class models, or those that break barriers in terms of size or price as well. But outside of that, we could put limitations on that with pricing, but then again, currency issues get in the way as well.

I was thinking of starting out kinda easy, maybe looking for the best sub-compact, and moving up in classes from there. I guess this thread is more or less a means by which I can measure interest in doing so... So I'm attaching a poll as well.

Holden Monaro over every single one of those--except possibly the Porsche--and only if it is the GT3 model. While I like most on that list, to me nothing beats style, price, and noise...which means the Monaro wins. The Mini being probably a close 3rd behind the Porsche--maybe tied.

We should limit it even more, actually, to vehicles sold today.

The "Best car" series was for "Best Ever", and if we do that again, a lot of the same names will get pulled up.

I personally like http://thetruthaboutcars.com 's T.B.A.G. and T.W.A.T awards... for ten best and ten worst today.

The headache with "Classification," would be the vagueness of what classification is. Hovever, if we can all agree on certian classes of automobile, then it should be fine...

I was thinking giving out a benchmark car, then a bit of a price variance, and then going from there. So if we were to say to your standard mid-sizer, we would look for something like the Honda Accord and the Ford Mondeo to benchmark the size and price, and then give a price allowance up to say $35K in the US, and the comparable amount in Europe and Australia (or wherever else).

I know it gets complicated, and I know I would have to set it up so that it is MY06+ for all cars nominated, but I still would like to get a bit more input I think.

...The only problem with this is that we can't have the super-thread at the end where we pull together all the winners for one last shootout...

Best racing car? Not just by results - by looks, action, sprinkled with a bit of personal prejudice.

I like the idea of the "Best car on sale today" thing too.

I'll hold my hand up here and admit I voted before reading the full option.

I saw "Maybe. There will need to be some bigger changes" and thought "yeah, like the porsche 911 becoming crap."

Hmm.... Lets do it by country, then bodystyle, then price.

So it will go like this...

Best Car Usa!

Sedans up to 30K Dollars!

Then all of the sedan/saloons will face off against each other. So on for the other body styles.
