Is motion blur in replays actually confirmed?

This is something I still haven't quite figured out yet, whether the motion-blur will actually be in the game or not. Some replay videos have it, others don't.. none of the publically-released game demos have it. The video seems to be playing at 30fps in the trailers and such, with standard 180-degree motion blur (tech-talk for those that know anything about filmmaking).. this should be less noticable, since the actual frame-rate of the game itself is 60fps. Unless the replays play back at 30fps with motion blur? That would definitely give it much more of a film/TV "look" than 60fps.

Is it possible it's just a publicity trick? I was watching some of the old GT3 videos, and those too had motion blur, yet none was present in the final game.

I guess the easiest way to answer it would be if someone's actually seen a real-time replay of the game with motion blur at a PD press event (NOT via a pre-recorded video file).

it is in the final game. just check the replayoptions and set the replaymode ( the first checkboxes) to musikapplyed replay. watch the replay in this mode an you'll see some blured cameramovement and some blurfilters.

That's not the same as motion blur....

Do people really not understand what we're talking about when we say "motion blur"?

GT3 does have motion blur in replays you have to change it in the replay options. :dopey:

TriplePlay
It's in photomode. Other than that, I can't help you.

See? Perfect example. If it's only in Photo Mode, why is it that ALL of the official videos show it in replays? Do you know what "motion blur" is?

And again, what was in GT3's "Music Video" mode is NOT THE SAME THING. That's simply an image filter placed over the image.. it is NOT MOTION BLUR.

Jedi, then tell us what IS motionblur according to you. Obviously a lot of people think it is the pretty stuff in the GT3 replays. I thought so too. Enligthen us. Give an example of *your* motionblur.

See attachment.

Motion blur is an artifact of motion picture technology. Unlike a still camera, a motion picture camera uses a spinning disc as it's aperture, allowing light coming through the lens to burn itself into the film. In standard motion picture cameras, the disc is a "half-disc".. meaning, as it spins, it's open for 1/48th of a second, which is one-half of the frame rate, 1/24th (or 24fps). This is done in order to allow enough light to reach the film so as to properly record the image before moving onto the next frame. Naturally this happens very quickly. When an object is moving during this 1/48th of a second, it "streaks" along the film frame, usually only in a very small amount. This is motion blur.

Now, in this particular thread, I'm referring to GT4, not GT3. GT3's "music video" mode does have a semblance of motion blur that plays approximately 10% of the time of the replay. The rest of the time, it's a standard non-blurred image, just like in gameplay and standard replays. However, in GT4, at least in all of the official videos from PD, motion-blur is on ALL the time, in STANDARD replays. And it looks just like the image below (I'm not sure if this is a replay image or a Photo Mode image, it's resolution is slightly higher than that of a standard replay). However, if you watch ANY of the official videos, including the E3 and TGS trailers, you'll see the motion blur. It's also quite evident in the Playscope replay video hosted on this very site. Pause the video while the car is going around a corner, with the camera panning to follow it... you'll see the background is "streaked" by the motion. Also notice that this is NOT any sort of "music video mode" like in GT3, this is a STANDARD replay.

My only question was whether this is actually a confirmed feature for ALL replays. In another thread, someone mentioned that it was "promised" by PD, yet is missing in all of the publically-released demos (BMW & Toyota). There's a whole thread about how it's missing in the BMW demo. All I'm trying to find out is whether PD did indeed "promise" that this would be in the game (and a link to the article), or if anyone here has actually seen live gameplay footage at a PD press event that could validate whether the motion blur is real, or if PD simply ran all their videos through a filter in order to achieve the look for the trailers.

a lot of people always talk about motion blur and its kind of stupid. its an arcady thing if u ask me. im sure there are some people on this site that have gone faster than i have but i have gone up to about 150 mph in a porsche a couple years ago and "motion blur" or whatever u wanna call it doesnt exist at those speeds. even if u havent been in a car going that fast, u could easily look out the window of a large jet (747 or something) and see if the ground is blurry as u are about to take off. well...its not. "motion blur" is unrealistic. but nfsu has it so u can play that if u must see it.

That's beside the point. Replays in GT are shown as though they were shot with a video or film camera. And motion blur is ALWAYS present in TV and film. As a video medium, games are limited to a specified frame-rate, unlike our eyes. Because of this, motion-blur is required.

Do you deny that the videos shown by PD are far more realistic-looking than GT3? That's largely due to the motion blur, even though people are clearly not aware of what they're seeing. By blurring the moving images together, everything appears much more fluid.

In case some of you are wondering why I'm being so picky about the precise definition and purpose of motion blur, it's because I spend most of my time doing visual effects work. CGI, compositing, things like that. Motion blur is an absolute necessity in CGI. Without it, things just look far too "fake", particularly in animations when things are moving around. Video games are, in a sense, real-time CGI, and until now they've been lacking this most basic of requirements, in motion blur. Anyone else here with a background in video, film, or visual effects will tell you the same thing. I had a friend of mine over the other day, watching some of the GT4 videos (E3 and TGS), and he was thrilled at the prospect of motion blur in a video game. Believe me, once you're exposed to it properly, you'll never want to do without.

OK, I get the point.

well...i know a few animators, movie producers, etc...hell, my brother went to full sail. and from most of what i know, most of these people are picky about little stuff. first off, motion blur is not required in real life. if it was, then hi definition wouldnt be such a hit. people seem to like clear, crisp images more than animated looking things in real life. sure animation may need it, but not something trying to appear realistic and i think thats what PD is going for. people with degrees in anything A/V are continuously ridiculing lighting and shadowing and angles and stupid things like that while the rest of the real world just wants a quality video, animation, sound or whatever. if PD wants a real life looking replay, keep the motion blur out. they had still cameras with fast enough shutter speed to catch a car going 150 mph and make it look stationary over two decades ago.

Go watch a high-definition video sometime.. you'll see things blurring there just like they do on any other format. TV is NOT real-life. If you watch a scene with standard motion blur, then watch the same scene again with no motion blur, the non-blurred version will look very "wrong".

And if PD was so much into "real-life", then why do all of their videos and stills have motion-blur in them? Again, TV is NOT real-life.. and a video game is on TV. Motion-blur may not be required in real-life, but it's there nonetheless. Hold your hand in front of your face, then move it back and forth real fast... and watch it blur.

Wtf Dude? To achieve motion blur with the naked eye, you have to 'fix' your vision. If you look at a tree going at 150mph, it sure won't have motion blur, your eyes are following the tree... :dunce:

If you look out the window and at the ground just next to your window, you'll understand what motion blur is.

Now within a TV screen, its easy to achieve motion blur, just watch any car shows and you'll see plenty of that. Its easy to see motion blur while watching TV because of the 2D perception we get, compared to real-life experience with 2 eyes, creating a 3D perception.

As if it'll be in GT4, no idea, but it would add some to the 'realistic' factor of the game, that's for sure.

Jedi2016: Rest assured that at least one person knows exactly what you're talking about. I remember being utterly fascinated by it while watching movies of GT3's intro before its release, only to find that the blur was only present in the prerecorded video clips (such as the track previews in Arcade Mode).

Unfortunately, I highly doubt that GT4 uses this technique. The only place I have seen it in real time is in a demo on the PC called "rthdribl:"

For all of you who don't know what we're talking about, the picture above demonstrates the motion blur that jedi is trying to describe. There is no console game that has used this technique.

Another pic (demonstrates the speed- and object-sensitive nature of the technique):

Well, I hope it has 'motion blur' in it. I like the FX.

As I recall, that particular plugin is based on OpenGL, which has severe limitations compared to other game systems like DirectX. And sometimes consoles can exceed their PC counterparts in certain areas, because the hardware is purposefully designed around "the game", while a PC, regardless of the power of it's components, must remain a multitasking machine.

GT3 did a partial version of motion blur in the "music video" style replays, but it was rather limited. It's possible that PD found a way to do it properly in the three years since GT3's release. I mean, it's already clear that they know a lot more about programming the PS2 than they did back when GT3 was made.

Here's hoping, at any rate. :)

if motion blur is a thing of real life, then the game could recreate real life motion and ur eyes could create "motion blur" depending on what ur looking at if the actual speed of objects moving by the screen is realistic which it should be since everything is modeled proportionally supposedley. most of the replay cameras move with the cars therefore there is no need for motion blur since the relative speed of the car is quite slow. it seems that in the past few years, people have become video game experts just sitting at their computers in some forum. talking about how easy coding is, etc. etc. etc... let the company make their game and either buy it or dont buy it. or go work for the company if everyone knows so much. im sure PD knows what motion blur is...telling them to put it in the game is kind of stupid. they'll do what they want to do.

I'm not "telling" anybody anything.. All I did was ask whether it was confirmed as being in the game or not. As I recall, you're the one who started the argument that it was unnecessary, and I'll chalk that up to simply being undereducated about the intricacies of video. Which is pretty clear based on your inability to discern the difference between video/film motion blur and real-life motion blur, which are in fact two entirely different things.

Man talk about pulling **** out of your ass and speaking trash about gamers, videogame makers and overall fans of the franchise... way to go dude.

"most of the replay cameras move with the cars therefore there is no need for motion blur since the relative speed of the car is quite slow." That's wrong. The camera follows the car, therefore the car doesn't seem to create "motion blur", but the whole background, which ain't in focus, is all suffering from "motion blur". Just like the pic Jedi displayed.

"t seems that in the past few years, people have become video game experts just sitting at their computers in some forum." Speak for yourself. I work in a game co. and have done so for the past 6 years. I find your comment pretty upsetting since you obviously have no idea what you talk about. Please, if you want to state facts, have the material to prove it.

Ok, slightly back on topic ...

Motion Blur in Replays would be nice, but not as default as it would get a bit annoying after a while. Maybe something like Ridge Racer Type 4? In RRT4 you had to press Select to put motion blur into replays so maybe in GT4 if you pressed a little-used button or something?
