Well yesterday, after loading up GT4 the screen went dead, and no sound came at all from that PS2 menu screen. So i restarted and this time absolutely nothing happened. Today, just now the same thing happened. I tried with several other games, but this just makes the PS2 boot menu screen (The one with blue) just keep making some weird sound and the game just wont load up.

The PS2 was bought in around 2004~ or late 03. Its the old fat one, and got the online adopter thing aswell.

Can anyone help?

EDIT EDIT: No sound whatsoever now :(

EDIT EDIT EDIT: I have NOT modded my PS2 in ANY way.

Is my PS2 dead?

Try getting a new AV cable, my connector broke and it did the same thing with SOCOM 3, if that doesn't work, visit google, you must.

From,
Chris.

Thanks Chris 👍 But its not the AV cable, im 100% sure. The PS2 menu, the place where you adjust date etc, that dosent show up anymore. The PS2 just starts, and the blue screen stays for a while, and fades off to black. And in a while, a sound comes, the same one that comes on at the start of the PS2 if normal.

Same thing happened to this guy:

But im not very confident of opening it up, I might screw it altogether.

Ah, I see, unless you want to send it to Sony (if it it still under some sort of warranty, which I doubt it is), I'd still fiddle with the AV cable to make sure the pins are intact, as mine were broken and there would only be sound but no picture, a little googling is all I can say.

From,
Chris.

Tried google, but the links above were the only ones relevant. The AV pins are still good. No point sending it off to Sony really, I can buy another used PS2 for like $70. But the last use of the PS2 was worth, me in my M5 in a lap of the Nurb :(

Ask Famine.

He buys broken ones off fleabay, and turns them into fixed ones in a short amount of time, and will no doubt tell you that yours is dead.

You should try: different tv, games, mem card, removing everything and booting, standing on its side/laying it flat, turning it upside down after inserting the disc, and trying that.

My slimmy absolutely refuses to load some games unless i remove everything (controller, cards, steering wheel, maxdrive) before i boot it.

You could try taking out your network adapter too.
Oh and give it a good dust.
Unfortunately, the phat ones are really only good for a few years average use, and to prove that, im on my 4th ps2 since 2000.

Is my PS2 dead?

I would try getting a lens cleaner, and then a new AV cable (or just clean the contacts with alcohol). And if niether of those work, tear the PS2 open and clean/ grease the gears. Don't worry the fat PS2 opens up nicely (I clean mine yearly, damn cat hair). And if that fails, you may have to buy a new one (or a PS3 if you can afford it). Sending it to sony to repair will usually cost more than just buying a new one, after parts, labor, and shipping.

YAY It sprung into life...a bit. I put in B:Revenge, it loaded the game, but gets stuck on the loading screens.

Thanks GrumpEone 👍 Ill try your advice in a min, I dont wanna open it up until I try everything ;)

B:revenge just loaded, but no sound.

Ooh Sound just started working.

Everything just started working properly again. Thanks everyone for your help, it was apprieciated :) Although, im bound for trouble soon :(

Oh no :( Now some games dont load right. I think ill need a lens cleaner now.
It takes ages to load.

No problem, and don't be afraid of tearing apart your electronic devices, as long as your not using a hammer to open it, you'll be fine. Just be careful and patient, and you won't hurt it more than it already is. I always tear apart my electronic devices when they start having issues, and 90% of the time it's something simple to fix. The PS2 (fat) is not that complex inside.

Also alcohol diluted with water makes a great lens cleaner, disc cleaner, and Disc Doctor solution.

really? i've had mine for like 6 years and it's been chugging along.

i find that if mine ever does something like that i unplug everything dust it all off support all the plugs with a book and it works fine.

Revenge is a piece of trash if there is no sound.. that game has amazing sound effects.. i play it with a 5.1 and man i can feel the intensity..

Ther's video but no sound? No mod.. hm probably your AV cable.

mine is the old box one too, modded and too is getting old. However, I think it reached its turning point when I got impatient and smacked the bottomside of the ps2 (when vertical) a bit too hard playing god of war 2 as when i get to one point, the game won't continue loading. I knew I smacked it too hard because I caused the lens to scratch the disc about 5 times on the same radius of the disc..

From then on, it had been in this fixed crappy state. But i'm still able to play certain games, thank goodness. Whenever several games won't load, I can tell because the ps2 (having been modded) makes peculiar sounds that it never plays normally. MY best option was to put in Turok Evolution, a game that still works, yet a game i don't play. Yeah I didn't buy it, Dad did.. it reads it, the Playstation 2 logo pops up, then it starts the game. When that works, i can put in other games I have that didn't work before and it'll function, lol. I don't know how that works but it does..

With such a story and complex procedures required to be done in any case my console doesn't play games again, I'm assuming your PS2 ain't dying either yet.. Sadly, it's in a much more worser state than my PSX

and VEXD, I have no clue how you are running your 4th ps2, but you got to take care of your systems more and don't play too frequently. Give the thing a rest once in a while.

Well as I said above, the PS2 is OK now. Although it loads slower, but its ok.

GrumpEone, I always open electrical stuff up, but I can never put them back together, thats why im worried.

Andy, Thats all I need to say.

Shaka, Im not planning on buying anymore systems, unless one of them dies ;) But, Ive heard the slims and prone to overheating. Can anyone back the statement up?

Turbo Lag, just get yourself a PS3. ;)
There is no point now if you buy another PS2. I mean, you can't play all the cool new games on the PS2 without being crappy don't it? Well if you still want to play the PS2, my only advice is just go down at any electrical shop or any electronic shop which can handle console repairs, or better yet, send it to a PC shop and get it sorted out. Maybe ask them to clean up your PS2 as well. It helps a lot keeping your PS2 from overheating as well as loading up your games faster than it is now. Probably won't cost much, maybe something like 100AU$ at most. :)

I'm still on my original fatty from May 2001 which doesn't appear to have any issues, other than it won't load the MAX Drive mini-CD unless I stand it vertically. It's been used more or less every day for at least a few hours, and has been known to be left on for over 21 days straight without a break while A-speccing Sarthe 24hr race without issue. (Had to go on a business trip mid-race and didn't want to turn it off! :P)
It's well ventillated and gets vacuumed once in a while and I run a lens cleaning CD through it periodically.

Then again, I've driven with VEXD's wheel & cockpit, and his DFP has the dimpled bits on the wheel worn absolutely smooth from use, :scared: so I'm pretty sure he plays a whole hell of a lot more than I do, if that's possible!?!

It's the old case of 'is it the AV cable or the Playstation', and it's back to haunt yet another person. Anyway, to my point, it's the AV Cable!

Didn't you even bother reading the thread before you post? Turbo Lag has clearly state it was his PS2 that was giving the problem. Having disc read errors, freezes and noises coming from the ps2, and yet you say its the AV cable? Your no help at all! Just give some useful advice if you can, if you can't come up with anything else, just keep it to yourself. :grumpy:

Turbo Lag, when you read this, just answer this. So what are you gonna do? Buy a PS3 or just buy a used PS2? Have you decide yet? :)

I confess, I didn't read the thread. I'm sorry!

I think ive decided for good. If the PS2 cant be fixed within around $30 of spending, Im giving up and selling all my games aswell. I need to get out of too much gaming anyway. And ive got an Xbox as well :) But the PS2 is now fine, after whacking it a bit with my hand lol.

Thanx for the support there Nick, i was getting booed off the stage.

And yes, i do play more than you perhaps, or i did, which is why ive needed 4. (all that rallying made my DFP smooth)

The tri-focal lense on the Phat ps2 wears out if you watch too many dvd's, play too many ps-one games and play wayyyyyy too much WRS in one year.

I am living proof.

Well as far as im concerned i am.

Good luck with your now slightly working ps2 Turbo Lag.

And Smallhorses, try removing absolutely everything from the console apart from the maxdrive disc, and switch it off at the back, then switch it on, and hit the red button, leaving the maxdrive disc as the first thing the console has to do, no pads, no usb connections, no mem cards to read etc. That usually gets mine booted first try.

alternativly, find a PS2 Emulator, buy a PC controller and you got yourself another PS2 Disc Reader. I don't recommend if your computer is slow

I've had my old fat PS2 since it came out. I believe it's six years old. I guess Im lucky. :)
But, srsly, I don't know, the problem you've encountered hasn't happened to me. I would love to help if I knew what was happening. I wish the best of luck for you.

Yeah I had my ps2 forever .I have never ran into problems accept the a couple of fan blades that broke when i cleaned it .Wich i had a used fan out of my friends busted ps2.But my mom throw it out or did whatever with it .But it still runs strong !And i got the BIG one

I have two PS2's... one is a Japanese launch System and the other a UK launch system so they are VERY old!

They are both made in Japan and I have never had one problem, not even a disc read error, no odd sounds, not clicking freezing or anything, guess I was lucky to!

Later machines would break after like 2 years!

Thats why I always try to get the consoles early before Sony start cutting corners like with the PS3...
