Is pulling the handbrake really THAT bad..?

Well... My sister's gone nuts... yesterday at a local EMPTY parking lot... *with me in the car* she went crazy. She was pissed at some ...stuff.. and I had to be in the car. So... she turns.. all of a sudden.. she jerks the handbrake.. the next 2, 3 seconds I felt was thrilling.. never felt anything like it.. and then for the next 20 minutes I cursed her ass off :D My question to you guys is, If she's travelling around 40km/h *thats.. uh.... ~25mph*, will there be substantial damage done to the braking mechanism if she did it .. oh.. lets say... once.. or twice a week?

edit: By the way, when I meant jerk the handbrake, I mean she yanked the hell outta it. The back wheels locked n started ta screech..^^
 
Maybe.... I did it in my Hyundai a couple times. I don't think it hurts too much. Depends on how your emergancy brake is set up. I think some are set up so a cable squeezes the rear brake pads or... well, basically just tightens the back brakes. This would probably just wearing pads/rotors out quicker.
 
I just did it last week for the first time in the rain. No squealing sounds, but trail mark was clearly seen after the road dried. It's bad for many parts of the car, including spings, struts, brake parts... I have no idea about rear disc setups, but for rear drums where 99% of them have e-brake cables, the cable will stretch causing it to weaken, and, if tighten the e-brake adjusting nut later, will cause the wheels to drag. It WILL hurt your gas milage in the long run.
 
pullin handbrake just locks up your wheels..but if you're going fast..say over 15 mph, you're gonna stretch the e-brake cable that goes to your rear wheels..and also, you're gonna lose grip on the wheels obviously..since it locks up and is sliding across the pavement

I could have been drifting in the car i was going to get.. It was a 5 speed manual w/ hand e-brake. I was gona have fun with that car... But once again as i alwas do, i got screwed.

you said something that is wrong..you CANNOT drift an auto..drifting is losing traction in the rear wheels and powering the car through throttle and braking..in a FF..you ASS DRAG, meaning you floor it and pull e-brake..plus they both look very different..

so why does she do it so often? why the e brake? a quick slam on the regular brakes will send stuff flying too.
 
my buddy pulls the ebrake in his 300zx when he busts a U turn. I'm like bish you need to calm down. He does it whenever i'm eating too bastard! scares the poop out of me sometimes.

almost every rwd is sold with an optional auto transmission (at least non-sports/super car). The problem with auto is that it automatically shifts when rpm is high so it's hard/impossible (not sure which) to drift. And that's probably the reason for him calling it ass drag

my point exactly..an automatic transmission is programmed to help you shift at safe rpms to keep the engine from overheating and that's usually at 2-4k rpms at regular driving..but if you floor it and pull e-brake..all you're gonna do is hit redline, hit your rev limiter, engine shut down, and you're gonna spin out because you have no traction control..and if you're close to something..you're gonna crash..so unless you control your rpms like puttin it in second gear or something, you're gonna be ass dragging and spinning all the way in drive gear..

some autos can be shifted through all gears. for exaple the 95 accord EX auto tranny has 1-2-3-4D-N-P with 4 being auto or 4th. just disable the rev limiter.

one thing you would not want to do is disable rev limiters..they are there for a reason so your engine doesn't blow up..why disable something that's gonna keep you safe? you wont want to disable the rev limiter unless you're all out on speed and dont care about one's safety..

Duke, my IS 300 is a RWD automatic. E-Shift to be more precise. I can shift it like a manual but there is no clutch. I have complete control over what gear I want to be in. Except 1st. :irked:

I drift like a mad man on the snowy roads up here.
 
you do know that the electronic shift gearboxes are WAY weaker than manual gearboxes..right...so just do your little drifting a couple more times and you'll hear some wonderful grinding noise..and it's not your tranny claping for your "wonderful drift"\

and skylinegtr..i was just saying, you wouldn't want to disable a rev limiter if you use the car as a daily driver..but yes..it could be done..just not a smart way to "improve" your car
 
Just had to mention, you can drift any car, it's just harder in some. I know a guy who does in an FF '93 Escort what can only be called drifting. Now, certain techniques are impossible in an FF, that is true, like Power Over, but the basic E-Brake drift and a feint drift are totally possible, as are techniques like a braking drift. However, the easiest car to drift is a light, manual, well balanced, FR, car. Which is why the AE86 is such a good drift car.
