Is the original CM Dirt worth buying?

Why can't they just change the name and continue on with the tradition? We so badly need a realistic rally game. It doesn't have to be a full on sim. Just enough realism to keep it fresh with a high shelf life. Kind of like the Forza of rally.

WRC on the PS2 was pretty good, back in the day. Sad how the next 2 disappointed somewhat.

I believe serious rally games suffer from the same curse as full on sims - limited market. So devs shy away from the serious stuff.

Don't know what else to make of it.

That's pretty much spot on, and I've said it before, despite RBR having the crown, it's so demanding that few people seem to complete it, or continue past a certain point. Clearly a number of people have, but those are not many and game developers see that.

I don't really care what the perceived score out of ten the games received - personally, I think WRC4 and possible 3 also beat Codemasters at the rally game. If I remember corerectly, there should be one last WRC game from Milestone, after which the WRC license will be up for grabs again.

I think there is certainly room in the market for a more serious, but not RBR level, sim game and a less serious but fun CMR type game. The old PS1 and PS2 CMR games were certainly not sims, far from it, but they were fun and demanding at the same time. There was no superfluous side tracking to other styles, no Gymkhana nonsense, just a great semi-realistic rally game featuring lots of great stages and real cars. They even had night stages in some of them.

The Hoonigan troupe have jumped ship to Need for Speed. Chances are that the next Dirt should be a lot more focused on actual motorsport.

Grid 1 is a disgrace to rally games. Not worth single dime. Better buy WRC 4 if you don't like WRC 3. But for the love of god forget about Grid 1.

After CMR series Grid turned into something very weird and unplayable. Codemasters lost their way :(

^^Hang on a sec.. What does GRID have to do with rallying?

I haven't experienced anything beyond WRC2 on the PS2. I actually read reviews for both 3 and 4 on the X360, and most of them said it's dreadful and dated. Though the physics are well... nice it went on to say.

On the fence about WRC4... don't want it to sit collecting dust like Shift 2.

You just need to approach it in the right frame of mind. If you go in there thinking it will be a sim you will be disappointed but if you go in there planning on having some fun you will be pleasantly surprised.

I mean Dirt the some sort of rally game. I mistake two same rubbish games from Codemasters. I like Their Colin McRae Rally 2.0 and then 5.0 but from Dirt it was all downfall.

I wrote Grid because i don't like it either :) stupid mistake. Yes Grid the some sort of rally game you mention is not worth playing. I wold definitely pick any WRC as strong substitute. But then if your Shift 2 only collect dust then your game taste is different and i;m not going to comment on that because we all have different taste's :)

Good luck finding the right game for you.

I definitely recommend Dirt. I just started playing it since I finally have a computer that can play it at high graphic settings. I'm having a blast playing it.

Milestone is planning another WRC game? Any idea on the release date/development cycle?
Well, they never actually say much about their games, as in no real hype, until a month or two before release. One or two Italian, or Italian speaking GTP member(s) have flagged the previous releases a little before the mainstream got wind of them - but that's all we got.

The WRC license though was reported a few years ago as being awarded to Milestone for five years in total (three years initially and then getting an extension to five) - so I'm certainly hoping.

Back on topic, I'd definitely agree. It was good on the console but I can only imagine what it might be like on PC.

I've been playing WRC4 for a while now, and can easily say it's one of the better RALLY games I've played, as the focus is tight on pure rally. @Speedster911, if you still haven't decided yet try and pick it up. The career mode is good for a rally game, the physics are relatively good, and they have a range of the official WRC cars. The only real thing that DiRT beats it is in sound and graphics. The only other bad point about WRC4 is the way the stages are set, as you will often be racing over the same parts of a route in some stages.

I must admit I'm a huge fan of DiRT, there I said it.
Having played WRC2,3 and 4 I can conclude that this is the game to go for if you want real rallying.
Long stages, service parcs, the real wrc cars and driver. the lot...

But DiRT just putes a smile on my face everytime I'm playing.
The graphics, the fun, the squishy noises coming from the turbo's, the coolbrodriftmonsterenergy style. I love it!
Don't get me wrong tough : If we returned to the Colin Mcrae rally days I would be just as happy as you guys.
but for now : I enjoy DiRT3.
The right mixture of the cooldudebrogymkhana stuff and proper rallying in Kadetts and Group B missiles.

It is truly great on PC. I bought it along with a few other Codemasters games a few years ago on sale on Steam. Unfortunately my computer couldn't play them at good graphic settings. Heck I had to have my settings all on the lowest possible which had me driving around in DiRT without people inside them. :nervous: It wasn't until recently after getting a decent upgrade I can now play it on High and its awesome. I just did a Big Rig race last night. THAT was fun. Especially the exhaust sound.
