I just deleted McAfee because the it was already oudated, and I was getting pissed with the "renew" pop-ups, so is there a good free antivirus out there? Currently, I am using Panda free antivirus scans, but I need something installed.

I'm using Symantec Corporate edition, which I got for free. Although you could make case for it costing me about $2,000 .. oh the perks of being a student.

You could also make a case for this being better off in the Computers Subforum.

AVG Free, it's nearly as good as the professional version.

I work at a computer repair business, we use AVG on all of our computers at the office, and that we build/repair.

Yeah, AVG is as good as you're going to get for free. Just as good as many of the 'professional' ones.

Avast is better...avast is...downright amazing. It has daily automated updates. I havent gotten a virus for so long. I even went to warez sites to test its strength (and to pick up some stuff for myself) and it blocked everything

I use the AVG-Free Edition also, but looks like I'll be looking into Avast...... :)

Looks like I might have to punt Norton at the end of the subscription in favor of Avast. Or at least look into it.

Both Norton and AVG are pertty good anti viruses. I use Norton myself, it does seem to take up a bit of resources, but it's not a huge deal.

Don't avast! have a free edition? I've heard its pretty good too.

But if you want truely rock solid protection, you can't go past NOD32. 33 (or 32?) VB100% awards in a row can't be wrong! 👍

Indeed Avast do have a free edition. I use it on my Mum's PC.

NOD32 is one of the only pieces of software I value highly enough to have paid for. Not only does it have the 100% record in Virus Bulletin awards but it uses a very small percentage of resources and is very quick too.

AGV is good......also get adaware and you could get microsofts anti spyware but it take up alot of processor speed. I also use norton anti virus 2005 which costs alot to update every year......its cheaper to buy the new version... but it does the job when combined with other free software.....

Slightly off topic but......I want to move norton onto my new computer.....can a just use the subscription from my old computer to the new one.....or will I be able to use both on one licence? (I may have to let one not be virus protected and just use free virus protection for that one)

My Dad uses AGV-Free too. He didn't want to pay Norton Anti Virus after the 3 month free trial so he used AGV. He's had no problems so far. 👍

This reminds me, I got an email in the other day about a recent VB test. The number of products which missed one or more virus is quite disappointing.

Code:
Product Name Combined Number of Missed Viruses

Grisoft AVG 574
Norman Virus Control 378
CA eTrust Antivirus 49
Sophos Anti-Virus 33
McAfee VirusScan 29
Frisk F-Prot 14
Authentium Command 7
CA Vet Anti-Virus 6
F-Secure 4
Kaspersky 2

and finally

UNA UNA Pro 30670

I have used AVG and Avast free editions, and in my opinion Avast is the best of the two.

But I have been using Nod32 for a year or so and I didn´t have any problems so far. 👍
