Is This Fair?

Funny thing is, I actually referred my friend to Jordan's post, and he said exactly the same thing as Famine.

Thanks for the offer, anyway Famine, but our friend wouldn't ever do that. Like you said, they don't have a legal leg to stand on anyway. If his HSC gets ruined over this, I'm sure Pat will take action for it. It'd make it that much sweeter if it did happen later down the track, because they wouldn't expect it.

Either way, you make a good point, Jordan. The cheerleader story, even though it's different in nature, is very similar to what's happening to our friend. Thanks for the help most of you. The exception being the guys talking about Animal and Incest Porn... :odd:

Well, glad my post helped. I don't know where I've got those pictures at now. But don't get too upset - they weren't much.

I don't think it is fair, as long as it stays between friends. If friends are poking fun at each other and stop when someone doesn't like it, then there is no problem. The problem comes when you start poking fun at things outside of your group of friends and to other people around the school. If you've been chosen as "dip**** of the week" for a website and had degrading and nasty things said about you on a website viewed by thousands daily, then you'll get upset (trust me, I know from first-hand experience). I trust you when you say that that kind of thing didn't happen, but the school might have thought it did.

As for possible courses of action:
Make sure the school administration knows that it wasn't a pregnancy allegation, that it was a joke between friends based upon how something was worded (if possible, point out the wording to them). Also, make sure they know that no one who can see it has a problem with it (maybe let one of them in to read the stuff, alerting them that it may or may not be true).

If the administration continues to punish him for the site, you can take legal action. Technically the site is made off school time, and out of their jurisdiction. Therefore they have no right to take punitive actions for something happening outside of school. It's like this argument: If you're outside of school and you look at p0rn on the net (as a lot of people do), the school can do nothing about it - even if they know it's happening. If it were in school, that'd be a different story, but from the outside they have no authority to take punitive actions for that particular crime. It's true for creating a site as well, if it's happening outside of school they have no authority to force you to take it down (although they can tell parents, which is what they're supposed to do). They could, in theory, also alert the police to what you're doing, but chances are that the police will be a lot more understanding and likely won't care.

I hope everything gets resolved (maybe I could talk to your school administration if need be). :)

(BTW, in case anyone's interested, the "dip**** of the week" site got taken down after the school called the owners' parents)

That is bull!! Way over the line, and exactly what is wrong with private fun? Just like Jordan, Famine, Der Alta, and the rest said, take action. I know how you feel, too. It sucks.

Believe it or not, GTP is banninated from general usage at our school for the catagories of "Games" and "Tastelessness" (No I did not make the last one up.) If anything, use this website:https://proxify.com It is for surfing the web annonimously, completely invisible of detection of the bastard system. Only one problem, if you are going to post while using this site, you are going to have to pay a monthly rate. Otherwise, it is only free viewing. 👎

Yes, proxy tunnels are good stuff. I use www.your-freedom.net which is also free (for now). The only problem is that they tend to be slow, and that most school computers tend to remove the ability to install new programs on normal users. Most high school administration staff like to over step their power. If you try and sit down with your principal they will most likely try and talk down to you or just ignore your points. Writing to them sounds like a better idea, plus you could save anonymity ("What, you accessed this terrible site from our computers!!??").

EDit:whoops didn't notice that proxify isn't a program, looks nice.

Proxify doesn't pick up GTP.

But yes, as everyone else has said .. take action on this. They had no right to suspend him for a website he created off school time and off school computers.

Sure it does! I use it all the time at school.

GTP used to be legal on our system, but this was, of course, before I became a member. Lately I have been trying to get GTP 'unbanned' from the system, but I am the only person who knows what G.T.P. even stands for. :banghead: I am the only member in our county for sure, and being the only fanbase in the area does not help my argument well. :grumpy:

You might not be the only one! "GTP" is an official, legitimate acronym according to Acronym Finder. :)

Yes, but Jordan, I didn't know that site existed until you posted it. What are the chances of someone finding it, typing in GTP, and then finding out what it means in one county without ever having heard of GTP before?

(just trying to prove a point)

Not very likely at all - I've just been looking for an excuse to point out that GTP is in AcronymFinder. :p

Something similar happened back when I was in high school... except in this case, the guys in charge of the site were actively viewing content during their class time and went so far as even working on it during class. One of them was coding part of it for an assignment or something. The admins and the principal got pissed so all they did was ban www.bytesector.com for a few months and threaten to suspend them.

The funniest incident though was in 11th grade. One of the teachers needed telnet for something or other so my friend was helping her out with that. The network admin caught the use of telnet and freaked out. He came running into the room at full speed with the principal and said they were trying to hack the school computers. It was the funniest thing ever. The teacher denied having taken part in it and the guys got suspended for a few days. Nothing big really - just a funny story that none of us will ever forget :p

^ Those stories right their are examples of how older people fear the knowledge of we the younger-than-they.

Thats interesting because it didn't work for me when I tried it on my laptop. O_o

My friend has now contacted two of the local TV shows that deal with "wrong-doings", etc: Today Tonight, and A Current Affair. He also contacted the local newspaper, The Express Advocate.

The Express Advocate and A Current Affair are interested, so he's made the site public and is letting them in to have a look.

Hope it goes well.

I haven't had anything like it happen, but I do know that ebaums world was started by a guy who went to my town's high school while he was there. Some of the content is taken from an assistant coach I had.

The article in the newspaper, the Express Advocate came out today. I read, really quite stupid (the school)...You think it will be on TV?

And for those interested, I obtained scanned copies of the Newspaper Article, which can be viewed by clicking on the thumbnails below. Keep in mind, this was the Front Page of the newspaper, which isn't exactly a crappy local paper.

But today, the school had a stop-work meeting ten minutes before lunch to discuss what has happened. Every staff-member attended. Apparantly a couple of people from my year overheard talks of expulsion, although we don't think they'd go that far. If they did, however, that would certainly bring them unwanted attention.

Another teacher mentioned that: "Patrick could go down for defamation." Well first of all, that is total and utter crap. Patrick went to a newspaper, which is a free-speech form of media, to discuss something he thought was very unfair. The article wasn't completely one-sided either, so there's not much they could do about that.

Other teachers are saying: "The school doesn't need this." Well, that's entirely their fault. In an assembly not logn before Patrick got suspended, we suggested that they just Block the site and forget about it, because it really didn't have anything to do with the school, and we were all in support of the website. They did nothing of the sort.

Anyway, the website is now closed down as Patrick thought it would be the perfect time to end it, with him winning this stupid battle with the school. The icing on the cake.
