This computer never ceases to amaze me with its ****tyness.
The latest problem to interrupt my otherwise peaceful day?

No Sound. At all. Ever. Unless, of course, I have Motocross Madness 2 running in the backround. Duh, right? Just run that game, and alt-tab it into the background, and things are peachy, right? Except that game takes up a bit too much of my RAM and CPU to do much more than browse the internet and/ or listen to music. I did not pay $1300 to listen to music. I want to play games.

It all started when I alt-F4'd out of the game after loading a level. BLAM! "Im deaf? No, its just this that theres no sound coming out of the speakers. Odd, sounds were playing a few seconds ago..." ::Kicks the machine::

I use an Intel 82801AA AC'97 audio controller (laugh now), and it seems there are no drivers anywhere on the web for it. So no chance of a new driver helping this.

I am going to reformat when my idiot sister gets around to making a list of "important files" that she wants to keep, but until then what can I do?

If I dont get my sound back, people are going to die.

Start > Control Panel > Sound and Audio Devices > Advanced (first one) > make sure all the sliders are all the way up.

wait a minute. you paid $1300 dollars and you dont have enough ram to run more than just one game at a time? how much ram is it?

I have 384mb of ram, but its PCI and kinda slow.
This was 1000 bucks in 2002, though, and ive spent a further ( I know, its not a word) $300 on a video card, ram, fan, etc. since then.

Oh, and the problem has resurfaced! Oh, the joys of microsoft.

No sound for me, not even in MCM2. This time it happened on my sisters account. Yes, I do blame her.

I get a similar problem with my via ac'97 sound card as well... but it's extremely rare that it happens on my pc. I think it's caused by an audio app hanging in a weird way or something.

Viper's arrogant response: Get a real sound card.

Viper's intelligent response: Upgrade your drivers.

Emad:
That is exactly what causes it. My sis was using the talk function of AIM when she signed off, so I think I can recreate that and maybe fix it.

Viper Zero:
LoL, I was waiting for someone to say "Get another damn computer" or something to that effect, thanks for the laugh.
Sadly, it seems there are no new drivers for my sound card.
