A Grand Prix on the streets of Italian capital city Rome has been confirmed by Formula 1 commercial rights holder Bernie Ecclestone for the 2013 season. The addition to the calendar will come as it increases in size once again, to 20 races.

With 2010 hosting 19 Grands Prix - the highest amount in one season to date, as first seen in 2005 - the calendar is set to expand yet further in coming years as the 20 figure is hit for the first time.

With Rome having been named as a possible candidate for a race last year before Ecclestone seemingly drifted away from the idea, it now appears as though as deal has been struck.

"Rome will come into the programme for 2013," the Englishman told German magazine Speedweek. "We will have 20 races and the teams will be happy with it."

It is also believed that Ecclestone is still considering a return to the United States in the form of New York street race.

I thought this idea was dead. I'd rather see a new permanent circuit on the calander, but the more the merrier... if this comes to fruition, that is.

A five-year contract for a Formula One street race in the Italian capital was signed at Monza on Friday, Rome Grand Prix officials have announced.

Ahead of Italy's existing race near Milan, they said that Rome would also be featured on the calendar in 2012 or 2013, after the agreement was signed by Bernie Ecclestone and organizer Maurizio Flammini on Friday.

"Congratulations for the results he (Flammini) has delivered," said Rome mayor Gianni Alemanno. "I hope Rome's Grand Prix can start in 2012."

The only obstacles are the objections of residents of Rome's EUR district, and opponents who are fiercely protective of historic Monza remaining the only Italian F1 event.

Alemanno insisted: "The Monza race will remain - it won't be destroyed by Rome's."

Will be interesting to see what layout they come up with. Although I would have rather had Imola back than another street course.

So, are we to see 2 Italian GPs?

Or is it going to replace Valencia as the European GP?

Or, is it going to be a Vatican GP?

I remember there was a rumour a while back that FOM had bought off or had been given the rights to the "Mediterranean Grand Prix" name by Adrian Campos for use with Valencia if the Nurburgring and Hockenheim had stayed.
There's loads of names they could use, they will probably stick with some kind of continent, country or region name rather than a town name.

Although, we have had the Dallas, Detroit and Caesars Palace Grand Prix, maybe those can get away with it just because they would have run out of names for US races .

I know they cannot have more than one Italian Grand Prix. There is some rule for that somewhere I think? Otherwise they would have done that already for the many other multiple races in the same country.

No, Monza or Valencia won't be replaced by Rome but an additional Gran Prix will be added. Vatican GP is a possibility

It will probably just be known as the Rome Grand Prix. That's what the Wikipedia article on the 2012 season says, and it has a source to support the use of that name.
