It's a turbo, it does 0-60 in 8 sec, it's Australian, and you can get one for $1300

Yes that's right - it's the 1990-1994 Mercury Capri.

Yum - 1.6 liters of pure power. Base Capri had 100hp; the Capri XR2 had a 1.6 turbo, 132 horses. Somewhat quick. Sexy, though, right? Maybe if you're a woman. Looks mid-engined, right? It's not. Rear-drive? Nope. And torque-steer was a *****, from what I hear. Still - you can't get a Miata for this price.

This thread is for discussing the 1990-1994 Mercury Capri, which you found out about when you clicked on this thread (unless you're cool).

By the way, I'm fairly sure this thing (which was built in Australia) and the 99-02 Mercury Cougar were the only two Mercurys in the last fifteen years to be fully unique on the US market. Man - what an achievement!

Oh, best thing: it's a four-seater, yet it's only six inches longer than a Z4.

For what, legless passengers with backs of steel?

The earlier Capris were way cooler.

You forgot to mention the part about it falling into pieces and having numerous mechanical failures if you look at it wrong, or if it's cold, or rainy, or sunny, or if you're living on a planet that looks blue when looked at from outer space.

I'm sure there's one around my area of the world, I see it quite often but badged as a Ford Capri I think, not sure.

Definitely. I've known someone for two years who owns a Capri and I never knew it had a rear seat. ConsumerGuide describes it by saying that it's a "padded parcel shelf with a hard-upright backrest and very little leg room. Even small children are likely to be uncomfortable." Fair. Rear leg room is 25.8 inches, an inch and a half less than on a Celica.

Yeah... but I mentioned it was sexy, right?

Hmm...was the 1.6 turbo Mazda-sourced? It looks kind of like the DOHC engine found in Proteges. The last generation of Escorts was based on some Mazda (323/Protege?) I believe so is this like some sort of twisted Escort roadster?

... Evil copy cat wanna be MR2... EBIL

That.. and its Ford.. which makes it evil 10 times greater... I've seen them... They are... well... yeah

Indeed it was.

Not sure if it was based on the Escort or not, though.

I believe it was based on the 323 hatch, but it had the structural rigidity and handling characteristics of a 3 sided box.

ah, the Ford Crapi.... Capri, there not to popular in Australia (The early 1990's models I mean).

I've seen those around. Pieces of crap. Only car I've ever seen with california plates and visible rust.

haha, one of Australias most popular motoring mags named it a god (YES, god) under the 'god or dog' section which appears every month LOL.
I couldn't believe it when I saw the word 'god' circled, but it is a Ford, and it is Aussie, so I really shouldn't have expected anything less

Now you have to specifically tell us to "sound off", or "state our piece", or "tell our thoughts", as if we needed an invitation to reply to your thread.

It's only a four seater if your kids are smaller than a golf bag. Even then, you could only carry one kid by ordering it to lie down and buckle one belt around its shoulders and the other around its knees.

But hey, it's a ragtop. Anemic power and mediocre handling don't necessarily spoil the fun, if you're into ragtops.

That's a capri?

I've always thought this was a capri.

And this.

I don't know what that thing is.

I knew a guy at a place that I used to work at, that had one of these capris, he used to tell me that he would beat me, but never wanted to race me(Im a s2000 owner).....he was saying that he has 250hp and acc. from 0-60 in 5s....and only one of his front lights actually worked.
Poor guy, i still see him every now and then Im gonna have to break the news to him somehow :( .....
;)

i found a capr (the one in the first post) out in the bush while i was moto riding, it was in good nick as most cars in the bush were burnt out, they are really appreciated here in Aus, and quite frankly i dont appreacate them either. id go for a early model MR2, like the one in GT3, not the late model crap

What I want to know is, with cars like this piece of crap, how the hell does Mercury stay in business?

You would be 101.7% correct. It is in fact badged as a Ford over here.

Typical Ford too, slow, ugly and falls apart if you look at it wrong. :yuck:

The Mk2 MR2 that you are refering to is early to mid 90's. An early MR2 would be the Mk1... http://64.26.1.50/go/MR2//aw11/photos/DSCN1261-kosei-MR2.jpg

And the late model MR-S is anything but crap... it is much more like the first MR2 than the Mk2 is... in that it is lightweight and just so so in the power, with more focus on control and handling, rather than raw power. But all are excellent cars.

That Ford thingy is a poser wannabe, much like the Del Sol is.... but even more so...

i drove a base 91 capi for a month or two. had about 145k on it. wasn't a race car, well it was just slow. but still it was a pretty nice little car. calling it a 4 seater is a little much. its a 2 seater with a verrrry small back seat.
