My PS3 died and I lost all my data a few days ago
I was Level 40/40 with over 1100 cars
I was a fool, I never backed up anything I always thought it would never happen to me.
I have got to say I cant really express how disappointed I am that its all gone, I have been a hardcore GT5 fan since the first GT
Now its back to 0
I have a question what happens to my gran-turismo.com web page with all my current data. When I create a new save on a new ps3 will it update back to 0 levels?

I really wish sony would let you take you hard drive and place it into a new ps3 being my hard drive didn't fail the ps3 did.
Its also extremely disheartening knowing my original save is safe and sound on the hard drive and I am forced to reformat it to a new ps3

Word to the wise BACK UP YOUR DATA at least once a week it will save you for feeling how i do right now

2. Didn't really need to create a thread about it to be honest.

Chill, take a breathe, and then go see about salvaging the HDD. I hope you remembered your login details! ;)
 
You cannot put the HDD from one PS3 into the other without formatting it.
He could only try to get his PS3 running again and back-up the savegame/using the data transfer utility.
 
Cant he just pull the HD and read it with a PC and pull the save data?

Basically the PS3 is mated to the HD
Every PS3 when a different HD or new HD is installed into it has to be formatted to that particular PS3

Dude that sucks so bad. I'm so sorry to hear that. Ya, every time I turn on my PS3 and I save ALL game data to a external drive. So if this happens, I can have all my data backed up. At least that's the plan.
 
Reflow it and recover your game save. That's what I did then bought a new PS3.
 
How can I backup my data without getting a new hard drive??? Is it possible? please tell me.
 
Whatever the cause, the easiest solution should be to put the hdd in an external usb case, plug it in any linux pc, you should be able to read every folder in the hdd. Since I have never tried it, I cannot assure you it will work, but use some help from a friend with knowledge, or go to a pc-fixing shop and tell them your problem.

Yes, then reflowing and using some proper flux and heatsink paste should revive it for at least some time, enough time to get the precious savedata off the PS3...

But, a reputable PC shop should be able to get some data somehow....just not sure.

Level 40 is A LOT of freaking time involved!
 
Get on YouTube and research YLOD fixes, get it working for long enough to back up your drive then bin it and get a Slim. No point trying to keep it alive long-term, it'll just break again and again and be a massive pain. There is no other (legal) way to regain access to the hard drive, though maybe you could do it by jailbreaking a new PS3. This isn't the place to discuss how to do that, though, such discussions here will get you banned as it's very against the AUP.
 
This happened to me and a windows pc won't see the files. Can't speak for linux tho - wish I'd thought of trying.

BTW all your online stats reset as soon as you go back online again. If you're that bothered kick off a new account and leave the old one for posterity.

Really mate? Too harsh in my opinion.

To the OP I feel your pain mate, thats terrible news, hopefully some of the cleverer people on GTP (and there are plenty out there) will be able to help you salvage the data. Hopefully you can do a YLOD fix for long enough to get it running and back it up successfully.

Agreed. I reflowed my ps3 when it died and I didn't lose any saved data. Now it works flawlessly. There are countless do it yourself videos on youtube.
If your ps3 is out of warranty then I highly suggest trying this yourself. If you send it in for repair then your data will be wiped.

My launch day PS3 YLOD'ed a few months ago - had to pick up a new slim (I luckily only lost a week or so of GT5 since I back it up).

Bottom line: without having the "dead" PS3 up and running to use the "back up data" option on the XMB - you cannot recover your saved data.

Each motherboard has its own specific encryption key that fills in the blanks that Sony puts in your HDD data. Whatever key was being used on the old MOBO is gone and any new PS3's key won't fit - so yea, hence the "you must format this drive" message on the initial start up of a PS3.

At least all your "online" data (COD or BF:BC2) is still saved on servers and you can PwN sum n00bz using your new Slim ;)
 
Reflowing will cost you $10 and you'll be fine for a while. I have two slims that I have used far harder than my fatty and have not had a problem.

Reflow wont work, chip on motherboard is toast
 
Sorry to hear that. Maybe you will enjoy playing through the game again, that's what I do when I complete GT games.

If your hard drive is ok the data can still be saved and transferred to your new PS3. I wouldn't trust myself trying to "do it yourself" though, it's better to go to a professional company.
