Like myself for instance.

Maybe i'm just too picky or whatever on what i don't want to do as a job?

Basically the only qualification i have is National Certificate in Computing: Level 2. But i recently found out that school leavers are coming out of school with this qualification - which means i wasted $9,000.00 on a stupid course.

I am able (ish) to do a welding job ($6,000.00 course) as i got a 75% pass mark (in 2001 no less) but the thing is i absolutely HATE welding and everything related (my Dad has been a welder/polisher etc for years now) to it, and also it is very dirty which puts me right off.

I am not going to apply for any supermarket or shop counter jobs as i'm not that good with money (i don't think) and i'd basically rather not do a job like that. And the pay is crap.

I think the only thing left is a factory job. Half the people in this town work at Fisher & Paykel (they make dishwashers/fridges etc and send them around the world) but the only problem is getting there. If there were no obsticles in the way (houses, bushes, trees etc) i could see the factory from here as it is only about five minutes or less away by car.

But i don't have a car. I need $2,700.00 and i can get a Skyline (already have money saved for it) but to get that money i need a job. There are no busses going that way (Dunedin City is in the opposite direction) so i suppose the only thing would be a taxi ($$$).

I'm 21 years old and have never had a job, and never even been to any job interviews. I am stuck in a huge rut and there doesn't seem to be any way out - my biggest fear (in job search terms) is failure in the job which is putting me off applying for jobs which i could probably do.

I need a good slap around the face and to be told to wake my ideas up (or something). :(

There's your problem, you've never even tried. No one is going to come knocking on your door and offer you a job.

Just get whatever job you can, you have to start somewhere right? At least you'll be making some money.

The trick is, find something that you like to do, and find a way to make money with it. That's what I always did. True, I don't work now, but that is what my wife and I were planning for.

So, what do you like to do?

I like working with Microsoft Office, but for most jobs like that you need years of experience or qualifications. And my typing speed is only about 30-50wpm typing with about four fingers at the most, while looking at the keyboard (i've tried Mavis Beacon a billion times but just cannot do it).

I think it's important to work for someone you like and that likes you. If you are friends with your boss and respect him as a person it makes it easier to do what is required of you because you are happier than if you are working for a complete ruthless a55 hol3.
Saying that i'v had loads of jobs some of them good some of them not so good.
My advice is go for something, it doesnt matter what. Once you are working it is easier to find another job as your prospective employer can see that you'r not a waster or a bum.
Dont let the bast4r0s get you down and keep on looking for your ideal job or at least a job you are happy with. Happynes is IMO the most important thing so you might be happier running a burger van than pulling in £300 P/w than taking orders from Hitlers little brother for £350 and that extra £50 probubly isnt worth it.
The best job I ever had was looking after a stable and about 45 horses, the money wasnt the best i'v ever had, the hours were long and the work was hard and dangerous but i enjoyed it and i liked the people i worked with so it ranks as good job in my book...

Anyway good luck mate...

i'm 15 and i've been trying to get a job. All you have to get out there and go to a mall or any other stores and such. Go in there and ask for a job. Where your at it couldn't hurt to build up your resume. At least you can make a little money. Do you live with your family?

I'd say take the factory job and walk or ride a bike there for a little while until you get money for a car. Once you start there there's bound to be someone there who can give you a ride once in a while.

The main thing is, you'd better do something because the longer you wait the harder it will be for you to find a job at all. Prospective employers will view no work experience as a big negative, and that will only be compounded as you get older.

That said, I hate my job, but it supports me and my wife fairly well, and pays for a nice sports car in the garage. Life is about tradeoffs, so for now, I can deal with that.

I can most certainly ride a bike. :) I have an 18 speed mountain bike but the tyres are flat due to lack of use. And there are so many spiderwebs on it that i'll need to organise a huge search party to find it. (;)).

I have considered riding over there everyday but if it rains (which it does quite often here) i'd probably get soaking wet.

Which is best when enquiring about jobs? Ringing, writing, e-mailing or going over to see them (not for an interview - just to see if any work is available).

If I wasn't terrified of going out in public I'd get a job as soon as I turn 16, coming up in about three months, but I just have this terrible phobia of other people, don't know what it'd be called or how to treat it though. Should I just stop being a little ***** and get a job?

I say take the factory job as well. Look because of your lack of experience you are going to have to start at the bottom somewhere. Once you get your foot in the door, then you can start working towards other postions that appeal to you. Maybe a computer job will come up in the office, and your boss might reconize that you would be better working there. Its all about drive, but you have to start somewhere.

Stop being a little ***** and get a job. 👍

I recall you were in this boat a while back, Mustang.

At 21 (and not in college or a university) you seriously need to consider getting a job. You are going to have to start to the bottom of the ladder somewhere, at some time. We all started at a crappy job, but if you're around other people who agree it's crappy, then you'll have a good time through it all, and possibly have an excuse to get drunk after work.

Don't worry about failure. Everyone of us who's worked more than a few jobs (especiallya well-paying one), has been turned down. In fact, there's plenty of things in life that are going to work in someone else's favor. But if you don't try to get a job, or have the experience, nothing at all will come your way.

Jobs and life won't knock at your door. You have to get out the door, even if that means not playing Gran Turismo for a while or surfing the web (yes, that means GTPlanet, too).

You need to knuckle down and make something of your life. GTPlanet isn't going to pay the bills, provide rent, or put food on your table. It's something you do after all the work's been done.

I'd figure it would be going to there office talking to them and giving them your resume.

I'd have to agree with you 100% pupik. I sat on GTPlanet almost all of the day after school this year. I learned that GTPlanet wasn't going to take me anywhere, my future and everything wouldn't come from surfing on GTPlanet all dayit would come from studying in school and after school. So my plan is next year to stay away from GTPlanet and post on the weekends or get myself banned. I need to study, as like you need a job. :dopey:

I say take that bake out, dust it off, put air in the tires and go there. You can easily say that you live close by and have been wondering about whether you could work there.

Many people take their bikes to work here every day. A car is often not an option, simply because it's too busy, and most people feel better if they cycle, it's healthy and it burns off stress hormones. If it rains, we just put on water proof clothing or use an umbrella, depending on the wind. I've done everything by bike right up till today, now I'm taking a folding bike (Brompton, which is American btw) to the trainstation, take it into the train to Amsterdam, and cycle on to work again from there.

I say go for it. Consider your face slapped. :)

Oh and I think you'll manage 10 finger typing if you keep at it, just try another training tool that suits you more or find someone to train you one-on-one. It's worth it, even for typing messages here on gtplanet ... ;)

Just out of curiosiy, has anyone had any success just plain asking for a job? Like to a store-owner. There's a samll computer shop down the street, but I'm not sure how to approach the guy.

I might start enquiring about this place next week then.

And the three PS2 Gran Turismo games i have are all collecting dust now as the monitor i play PS2 stuff on blew up last Sunday and the PS2 is back in the box it came in. I'm not going to take it out until i buy a new TV in late November - just before GT4 comes out on the 5th of December.
